Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, Shreveport boasts the largest collection of important twentieth-century buildings in the state of Louisiana, and is surpassed only by New Orleans in the number of locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Well-known Shreveport historian Eric J. Brock details the history of the city's commerce, civic development, neighborhoods, architecture, cemeteries, peculiar events, culture, religion, and education. Based on his columns for the long-running series, "The Presence of the Past," which appeared weekly in the Shreveport JournalPage, it is the result of many years of documentation and research. One can witness the breakup of the Great Raft, relive the yellow fever epidemic of 1873, sing along at the Louisiana Hayride, and retrace the steps of Martin Luther King, Jr. Written in response to an overwhelming number of requests and suggestions for a book of its kind, Eric Brock's Shreveport should fill the void for academic books depicting the area.
Book Synopsis Shreveport and Bossier City by : Neil Johnson
Download or read book Shreveport and Bossier City written by Neil Johnson and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neil Johnson, a native Shreveporter and one of Louisiana's finest photographers, here presents a lovingly crafted portrait of his hometown and its companion city across the Red River. No one else could have done it better. For longtime residents, Johnson's words and photographs will carry the comfortable familiarity of a family album - yet one that also holds new discoveries waiting to be made. For visitors, the book will be a powerful introduction and guide. As veteran Shreveport journalist Jim Montgomery points out in his informative Foreword, Shreveport and Bossier City are a multifaceted place, a place of contrasts: a part of Louisiana, yet with an unmistakable touch of Texas; possessed of a Sun Belt vitality, yet cherishing strong links to the traditions of the Old South. Neil Johnson manages to capture on film the authentic diversity of this place of pulsating repose.
Book Synopsis Bossier City by : Kevin Bryant Jones
Download or read book Bossier City written by Kevin Bryant Jones and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bossier City sprung up around cotton fields, railroads, steamboats, and factories as the little town across from Shreveport. Today, the city thrives as the fastest growing in Louisiana. The tight-knit community of citizens who have called Bossier City home for several generations has grown to include an influx of newer transplants and Air Force personnel. "Old Bossier" remains the heart of the city, and its established families and businesses are proud to retain the simple nature of the past. This book remembers days of community and closeness, capturing the era when people built their own houses out of materials they had, walked downtown to a diner or market, and saw the first bomber fly overhead. This collection captures 1920s architecture, hardworking residents, and downtown roots but also celebrates the emergent and progressive nature of Bossier City. Today, the arts are flourishing, the stores are busy, the Barksdale Air Force Base is the jewel of the city, and the strong community identity is continually evolving.

Book Synopsis Wicked Shreveport by : Bernadette J. Palombo
Download or read book Wicked Shreveport written by Bernadette J. Palombo and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the rough-and-tumble days of the nineteenth century, Shreveport was on the very edge of the countrys western frontier. It was a city struggling to tame lawlessness, and its streets were rocked by duels, lynchings and shootouts. A new century and Prohibition only brought a fresh wave of crime and scandal. The port city became a haunt for the likes of notorious bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde and home to the influential socialite and Madam Annie McCune. From Fred Lockhart, aka the Butterfly Man, to serial killers Nathanial Code and Danny Rolling, Shreveport played reluctant host to an even deadlier cast of characters. Their tales and more make up the devilish history of the Deep South in Wicked Shreveport.

Book Synopsis The Jewish Community of Shreveport by : Eric J. Brock
Download or read book The Jewish Community of Shreveport written by Eric J. Brock and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish presence in northwest Louisiana actually predates the establishment of Shreveport in 1836. From the very beginning, Jews have been part of the city's civic, social, and mercantile life. Pioneer settlers began holding services in private homes in the 1840s, and by 1858 the community was sufficiently large enough to consecrate a Jewish cemetery and the first Jewish benevolent association, a forerunner of today's North Louisiana Jewish Federation. In 1859, the first congregation was founded. In The Jewish Community of Shreveport the rich history of this influential and vibrant citizenry is chronicled by well-known Louisiana historian Eric J. Brock, archivist of Shreveport's B'nai Zion Temple. Nearly 18 decades of Jewish life in Shreveport are depicted in over 200 vintage images, many of which are previously unpublished. Both of the city's synagogues, B'nai Zion and Agudath Achim, are represented, as are many of the rabbis, business leaders, political leaders (including three mayors), and laypeople from the community's long history.

Book Synopsis The Civil War in Louisiana by : John D. Winters
Download or read book The Civil War in Louisiana written by John D. Winters and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1991-08-01 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive history fills an important gap in the story of the Civil War. Too often the war waged west of the Mississippi River has been given short shrift by historians and scholars, who have tended to focus their attention on the great battles east of the river. This book looks in detail at the military operations that occurred in Louisiana—most of them minor skirmishes, but some of them battles and campaigns of major importance. The Civil War in Louisiana begins with the first talk of secession in the state and ends with the last tragic days of the war. John D. Winters describes with great fervor and detail such events as the fall of Confederate New Orleans and the burning of Alexandria. In addition to military action, Winters discusses the political, economic, and social aspects of the war in Louisiana. His accounts of battles and the men who waged them provide a fuller story of Louisiana in the Civil War than has ever before been told.
