Kelsi, 12, and her teammates Red Nose and Black Nose, two wolf dogs, find themselves as players in a strange new world. Here, they must compete to stay in good standing, not only for their reputation but also for their survival. Realizing that it would be much harder to get back home, they made it a point to take the game more seriously in order to survive and get to the top. However, when Kelsi is overcome with the need to win, she begins to throw herself and her friends into more and more dangerous predicaments. After Kelsi learns more about the legend of the copper cyborg, she comes up with a plan. But will the cyborg be what Kelsi and the village need to make it to the top or is the game world doomed from the start? The Legend of the Copper Cyborg blends the classic with the modern. It combines the enchantment of Oz, the suspense of Frankenstein, the mechanics of Minecraft, and the exploration of the Jungle Book into one twisting, fascinating saga that is sure to entertain even the most reluctant of readers.

Yet few books focus on the leadership challenges the occupants of the office face. Mayors and the Challenge of Urban Leadership examines twelve case studies of mayoral leadership in seven cities, from the New Deal era to the beginning of the 21st century. The prospects for mayoral success or failure are driven by how mayors manage the fit between political commitments and the broader patterns of political competition. City Hall powerhouses like Richard J. Daley of Chicago (1954-76), David Lawrence of Pittsburgh (1946-58), Tom Bradley of Lost Angeles (1973-83), and Robert F. Wagner of New York (1954-65) came to power in times of political crisis. They realigned politics in their cities to reinvigorate municipal government and bolster their power. In contrast, mayors with less redoubtable reputations like Mayors Sam Yorty of Los Angeles (1961-73), Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland (1977-79), Jane Byrne of Chicago (1979-83), and Frank Rizzo of Philadelphia (1972-1980) were outsiders who lost their battles to challenge powerful political coalitions in their cities. The new breed mayors of the 1990s--among them Rudy Giuliani of New York, Dennis Archer of Detroit, and Ed Rendell of Philadelphia--used modern campaign and governing techniques and scored surprising policy and political victories as a result. Mayors and the Challenge of Urban Leadership concludes with a discussion of Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York, elected in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, as an exemplar of the modern style of governing big cities in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avoiding or controlling fatigue damage is a major issue in the design and inspection of welded structures subjected to dynamic loading. Life predictions are usually used for safe life analysis, i.e. for verifying that it is very unlikely that fatigue damage will occur during the target service life of a structure. Damage tolerance analysis is used for predicting the behavior of a fatigue crack and for planning of in-service scheduled inspections. It should be a high probability that any cracks appearing are detected and repaired before they become critical. In both safe life analysis and the damage tolerance analysis there may be large uncertainties involved that have to be treated in a logical and consistent manner by stochastic modeling. This book focuses on fatigue life predictions and damage tolerance analysis of welded joints and is divided into three parts. The first part outlines the common practice used for safe life and damage tolerance analysis with reference to rules and regulations. The second part emphasises stochastic modeling and decision-making under uncertainty, while the final part is devoted to recent advances within fatigue research on welded joints. Industrial examples that are included are mainly dealing with offshore steel structures. Spreadsheets which accompany the book give the reader the possibility for hands-on experience of fatigue life predictions, crack growth analysis and inspection planning. As such, these different areas will be of use to engineers and researchers.
