L'image de l'écrivain en pâtit : après L'Écume des jours, les romans signés de son véritable nom passent inaperçus. En 1953, devant l'échec de L'Arrache-cœur, il se détourne de l'écriture romanesque au profit de la chanson, en tant que parolier, chanteur et directeur artistique chez Philips. Il crée également pour le théâtre et le cabaret. Ses chansons, reprises encore de nos jours, ont marqué et fasciné nombre d'auteurs-compositeurs.
