Book Synopsis Proceedings of a symposium honoring the careers of Ross and Joyce Bell and their contributions to scientific work. Burlington, Vermont, 12?15 June 2010 by : Terry L. Erwin
Download or read book Proceedings of a symposium honoring the careers of Ross and Joyce Bell and their contributions to scientific work. Burlington, Vermont, 12?15 June 2010 written by Terry L. Erwin and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 80th birthday of Ross T. Bell, Professor Emeritus of Entomology at the University of Vermont, his colleagues and former students staged a Festschrift in his honor that included his wife and oft-times co-author, Joyce Bell. Two days of scientific presentations and a field day resulted in twenty-six manuscripts on such diverse organisms as Coleoptera, Collembola, and Diptera and in such disparate fields as taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology, with a sprinkling of natural history and cyberinfrastructure. Mostly, the theme of the papers focus on the beetle family Carabidae, on which the Bells spent a number of decades in pursuit of information on taxonomy and biology, particularly for the wrinkled bark beetles, the rhysodines. Twenty-six scientific contributions make up this volume and they are introduced by the preface and first two papers on the Bells themselves and their other contributions to teaching and natural history studies in the environs of Burlington, Vermont.

Book Synopsis Harvesting Boreal Mixedwood Stands to Favour Conifer Regeneration by : G. Blake MacDonald
Download or read book Harvesting Boreal Mixedwood Stands to Favour Conifer Regeneration written by G. Blake MacDonald and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 2000 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boreal mixedwood sites, an ecologically & economically valuable component of Ontario's forested landscape, are typically dominated by hardwoods soon after major disturbances such as clear-cutting. Alternative harvesting methods may help reduce the level of competition in the regeneration environment and enrich the conifer content. This report describes field trials in northern Ontario that tested approaches for maintaining or increasing the conifer component in hardwood-dominated stands. The report explains the context & rationale for the trials; documents the locations, designs, layouts, & methods to facilitate reassessment over the long term; and presents responses observed during the first three years of treatment.

Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarises the potential use of alternative silvicultural (harvesting) systems on the productivity of boreal mixedwood forests. Begins with an overview of the ecology of boreal mixedwoods, including physical environment, stand dynamics, and landscape ecology; then provides detailed reviews of modified clear-cutting systems (including strip cutting, patch cutting, and seed-tree cutting), shelterwood systems, and selection systems (including group selection and individual tree selection). Also briefly discusses the environmental considerations that are associated with these systems (effects on soil, water resources, wildlife, and aesthetics). Concludes with a discussion of areas of uncertainty in the application of alternative systems and the perceived problems that have limited their use in boreal mixedwoods.
