Book excerpt: Emily Andrew-Miceli, travel escort extraordinaire, and her husband, Etienne, are leading a merry band of globetrotting seniors on a tour of Scotland's highlands and islands. In addition to the usual haggis tasting and kilt shopping activities, Emily has organized a high-tech scavenger hunt—her own version of the Highland games that soon turns into all out clan warfare. When one feuding team member is found dead, Etienne—a former police detective—suspects an allergic reaction. But upon discovering that the victim's underhanded tactics may have accidentally unleashed an ancient curse, Emily realizes she'll need a truly brave heart to survive this ill-fated fling. Book excerpt: In contemporary society, the nature of reality is continually challenged and each day there are new examples illustrating that perception has become reality. This book collection considers how researchers might evaluate evidence when truth claims can no longer be made. The authors address issues of perception, evidence, reality and postmodernism from a variety of different backgrounds including history, ethics, cultural studies, law and social science.

Book excerpt: The shocking true crime story of an Alaskan college student’s murder and her mother’s relentless crusade for the truth. When police told Karen Foster that her eighteen-year-old daughter, Bonnie Craig, had died in a hiking accident, she knew the pieces of the investigation just didn’t add up. Bonnie would have never ditched her classes at the University of Alaska to go hiking. And she didn’t drive—so how would she have reached McHugh Creek, miles outside of Anchorage, in the first place? Armed with little more than her own conviction, Karen set out to find the truth behind her daughter’s death. After a long series of false leads and dead ends, it seemed the case would forever go unsolved. Then, after twelve years of public campaigning, private despair, and increasingly tense dealings with the detectives working the case, Karen received an e-mail that would change everything: the system, at long last, had produced a match for the unknown DNA in the case—from a man in a jail all the way across the country. Here is the chilling tale of a mother’s unflagging fight to track down the monster who stole her daughter’s life—and the battle to ensure that he, and others like him, would no longer be able to evade justice. Book excerpt: Bonnie, Couglin, Jeffries and Low's Criminal Law positions the authors' authoritative grasp of the subject against a background of cultural and political debate. The text deals with profound questions integral to the study of criminal law in a changing society: current controversies in the law of rape and sexual assault, the Bernard Goetz case and the use of deadly force in self-defense, defenses available to battered women, the insanity defense, and capital punishment. The third edition also includes a new chapter on mens rea in federal crimes.

This casebook features rigorous analysis of legal doctrine positioned against a backdrop of cultural and political debate. Its core is the act and mental state requirements of both the common law and the Model Penal Code. Topics of current interest include sexual assault, stand-your-ground laws, battered woman's syndrome, the insanity defense, and capital punishment. The chapter on liability for the conduct of another is completely new. It integrates treatment of two doctrinal paths to that result, complicity and conspiracy, beginning with the Supreme Court's 2014 Rosemond decision and combining consideration of other doctrines common to both.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is to explore teachers’ evolving personal epistemologies, or the beliefs we hold about the origin and development of knowledge in the context of teaching. The chapters focus on a range of conceptual frameworks about how university and field?based experiences influence the connections between teachers’ personal epistemologies and teaching practice. In an earlier volume we investigated preservice and inservice teachers’ beliefs and teaching practices (Brownlee, Schraw and Berthelsen, 2011). While we addressed the nature of teachers’ personal epistemologies, learning and teaching practices, and approaches for changing beliefs throughout teacher education programs, the volume did not address conceptual frameworks for the development of teacher’s personal epistemologies. To address this gap, the book is focused on teacher educators, teachers and teacher education programmers in universities with an overall aim of highlighting how we might support preservice teachers’ involvement in learning that is challenging and inservice teachers’ engagement in professional experiences that promote changes in teaching practice. We argue that teachers need to be encouraged to question their beliefs and develop increasingly sophisticated beliefs about their knowledge and their students’ knowledge that facilitate learning and intellectual growth.

Book excerpt: Attorney Bonnie MacDougal knows firsthand the fast-paced world of the big-city law firm and the impact of a frenetic practice on a lawyer's family life. This intimate knowledge infuses her thrillers with stunning authenticity. And now, with Angle of Impact, she gives us an explosive novel of suspense that literally begins with a bang. Dana Svenssen, a brilliant, overworked Philadelphia lawyer, is on her way to a routine business meeting when her carefully ordered world detonates. The helicopter carrying her client collides with an airplane directly over the amusement park where Dana's two daughters are spending the day on a class trip. As fiery debris rains down on screaming families, Dana desperately races to the scene to find her children. Then, in the frantic aftermath, she discovers that the tragic accident isn't an accident. Yet determining the probable cause of the collision is arduous and nearly impossible. As Dana assembles a crack team of forensic aviation experts to reconstruct the disaster, her troubled marriage threatens to crash and burn as well—until a kidnapping suddenly throws Dana into the maelstrom of a deadly, all-consuming conspiracy. Sharp, tautly written, and packed with vivid characters and nonstop action, Angle of Impact proves that Bonnie MacDougal has earned her reputation as "the female John Grisham."—London Evening Standland “Starts fast and keeps moving . . . Gives readers an insider’s view of the way big law firms try big cases.” —Phillip Margolin Author of The Burning Man
