Book excerpt: For many years, shotcrete (sprayed concrete) has been used for slope stabilization and the reinforcement of degraded structures. Nowadays, it's also used to build full-depth structural reinforced concrete elements such as shear walls, columns, thin shells, tunnel linings and girders. However, concerns regarding the encapsulation quality of the reinforcing bars have been raised by structural engineers. Indeed, imperfections could be created specifically behind the reinforcing bars if concrete is inappropriately sprayed which could cause the premature failure of structural elements. Essentially, very little research has been completed on the subject and the current guidelines rely completely on empirical evidence which serves only to evaluate the encasement quality of reinforcing bars from cores taken from pre-construction panels. This study aims to increase the scientific understanding regarding the bond stress reduction between reinforcing bars and concrete caused by the presence of such imperfections in order to include this phenomenon in the current inspection and design guidelines for shotcrete structures. To counteract the bond stress loss, if any, modification factors to be used in conjunction with the development length equation of reinforcing bars in tension is proposed. To do so, the study includes an experimental, a modeling and lastly an analytical phase. The experimental phase includes sprayed as well as cast in-place with artificial voids (to recreate the imperfections observed when shotcrete is incorrectly applied) “pull-out” specimens. Cast in-place “beam-end” specimens with artificial voids were also studied. The modeling phase only includes “beam-end” specimens and the main studied results were the ultimate load and the mode of failure of the specimens which were found to be mainly influenced by the transversal length of the voids (or un-bonded perimeters) and the concrete cover. The results allowed to establish un-bonded perimeters limits beyond which a possible reinforcing bar pull-out failure could occur. However, since a certain bar stress loss was still observed even below the limits established, the analytical phase served to propose modification factors to be used in conjunction with the development length equation. Thus, important guidelines have been created for structural engineers allowing them make decisions regarding the integrity of shotcrete structures during the inspection phase or to take into account shotcrete during the design phase of structures if imperfections are observed or are susceptible to be created behind the reinforcing bars.

Book excerpt: The International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib) is a pre-normative organization. 'Pre-normative' implies pioneering work in codification. This work has now been realized with the fib Model Code 2010. The objectives of the fib Model Code 2010 are to serve as a basis for future codes for concrete structures, and present new developments with regard to concrete structures, structural materials and new ideas in order to achieve optimum behaviour. The fib Model Code 2010 is now the most comprehensive code on concrete structures, including their complete life cycle: conceptual design, dimensioning, construction, conservation and dismantlement. It is expected to become an important document for both national and international code committees, practitioners and researchers. The fib Model Code 2010 was produced during the last ten years through an exceptional effort by Joost Walraven (Convener; Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands), Agnieszka Bigaj-van Vliet (Technical Secretary; TNO Built Environment and Geosciences, The Netherlands) as well as experts out of 44 countries from five continents.

Book excerpt: The effects of hole preparation method, grout type, hole diameter, bar size, embedment length, cover, reinforcing bar deformation pattern, bar surface condition (epoxy coated or uncoated), orientation of the installed bar, and concrete strength on the bond strength of grouted reinforcing bars are described. Hole preparation methods, using a high-speed vacuum drill or a hand-held pneumatic hammer drill, and cleaning methods, using a fiber bottle brush with water, a fiber bottle brush without water, or compressed air only, are compared. Two capsule systems, two two-component grout systems, and two nonshrink grout systems are evaluated. Hole diameters range from 0.75 to 1.5 in. for No. 5 bars; 1.25 in. diameter holes are used for No. 8 bars. Embedment lengths range from 4 to 12 in. for No. 5 bars and from 6 to 15 in. for No. 8 bars. 1.5 and 3.0 in. covers are used. Two bar deformation patterns are evaluated. Bar installations include vertical, sloped, and horizontal. Concrete strengths range from 2700 to 5900 psi. Test results are used to develop rational design and construction requirements. A standard test to establish the Strength Class of a grout for anchoring reinforcing bars is proposed. In addition, a test method currently in use by one state department of transportation as a technique for proof-testing grouted reinforcement in the field is evaluated.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-High-Performance Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-SFRC) is an emerging concrete considered as an optimal, durable material that can substitute conventional concrete owing to its distinct fresh and hardened properties. Thus, it is essential to understand the mechanism of stress transfer between this concrete and conventional reinforcement that permits the composite action of both materials. A four-point bending test program (FPBT) was arranged and conducted on 19 beams designed for the bond development to occur in the constant moment region along a short embedment length in order to achieve a uniform distribution of bond stresses, enabling measurement of bond strength through reverse engineering of beam strength and deformation. Additional material testing was conducted on prisms under 4-point loading in order to extract the mechanical properties for all material mixes considered. The bond-specimens failed either by pullout or by cone formation with minimal deterioration of the concrete cover, illustrating the high confinement provided by the novel concrete surrounding the bar in tension. The bond strength was determined to be directly proportional to the tensile strength capacity of the design mix, where for the strongest material the bond strength was approximately 30 MPa. Moreover, the test results indicated a very ductile flexural beam response accompanied by significant mid-span deflection reaching 27 mm and substantial bar-slip values attaining 19 mm. Different UHP-SFRC mixes, concrete covers, and embedment lengths were considered. A numerical model was developed to simulate the FPBT using a nonlinear finite element analysis platform, VecTor2, with the ability to model this novel concrete. This high bond strength provided by the concrete cover enables a significant reduction in the design development length as compared to what is used today for conventional concrete.

This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the preparation for the fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010, task group 4.5 Bond Models undertook a major review of rules for bond and anchorage of reinforcement in the CEB-FIP Model Code 1990. This bulletin presents the outcome of that review, describes the rationale for the revisions and presents the evidence on which the revisions are based. The principle changes in MC2010 include raising the limit on concrete strength that may be used when determining bond resistance to 110MPa, introduction of a coefficient η4 to cater for different reinforcement Classes, and coverage of new construction materials including epoxy coated and headed bars. The format of design rules has been changed to permit more rational treatment of confinement from concrete cover and transverse reinforcement, the contribution of end hooks and bends for tension bars, and end bearing to compression laps. New guidance is provided covering a range of construction techniques and service environments and the influence of long term degradation. Analyses of various aspects of detailing on performance of laps and anchorages have resulted in discontinuation of the ‘proportion lapped’ factor α6, alterations to requirements of transverse reinforcement at laps, and have resolved inconsistencies in provisions for bundled bars between major national codes. Apparent inconsistencies in existing rules for lapped joints and anchorages and between the local bond/slip model and design rules are also resolved, thus allowing integration of application rules and modelling. Finally, the basis for an attempt to introduce simple detailing rules for laps and anchorages is described.

Book excerpt: Shotcrete: Materials, Performance and Use is a comprehensive textbook covering the current state-of-the-art shotcrete technology. It provides an overview of the many and various uses of shotcrete. Shotcrete is well suited for construction of curvilinear structures (domes, shells, bobsleigh/luge tracks, etc.) and overhead shotcrete applications (seismic retrofit, repairs, ground support, etc.) that could not be constructed technically and/or economically using conventional formed, cast-in-place concrete construction methods. It contains chapters on history, shotcrete materials and mixture proportioning, performance, shotcrete research, equipment and shotcrete application. It is also comprised of shotcrete case history examples including buildings and structures, infrastructure repair and rehabilitation, ground support and shoring, underground support in tunnels and mines, swimming pools and spas, and, finally, architectural shotcrete. This text should be of interest to design engineers and architects considering the use of the technology, as well as academics. It serves as a useful guide to contractors using shotcrete in one or more of its many and various applications.
