Book excerpt: This thesis examines the typical behavior of the interface bond between a selection of FRP treatments and various types of surface preparation on reinforced concrete beams under loading. It also describes an innovative specimen that enables examination of bond properties using a notched beam under a four-point bending test. The thesis also studies the bond between FRP and concrete under impact loading and discusses the strain rate sensitivity of the FRP- oncrete bond. Three surface treatment methods (water jetting, sandblasting, and jackhammering), two bonding agents (aromatic isocyanate (ATPRIME®) and vinyl ester), and three FRP systems (sprayed glass fiber reinforced polymer, sprayed carbon fiber reinforced polymer, and glass fiber reinforced polymer wrap) were investigated. The influences of FRP bond length, specimen notch depth, and a wide range of loading rates (creep, quasi-static loading, and impact loading) on bond behavior were also investigated. The notched beam specimen was also used to understand the debonding mechanism under impact loading. An impact setup was successfully developed to measure the bond stress and fracture energy of the FRP- oncrete bond. Bond strength values and toughness values were calculated for different surface treatments, FRP application methods, and bonding agents used. The FRP- oncrete bond strength was found to be a strain rate sensitive parameter that increases as the strain rate increases. A dynamic improvement factor (DIF) was defined to characterise the influence of different material and strain rate parameters on bond strength. A correlation was found to relate dynamic improvement factor to strain rate for different surface preparation types. An attempt was made to calibrate the energy and traction parameters of the cohesive element in ABAQUS to reproduce the same load displacement behavior as observed in the test from a modeled beam. Using different ABAQUS cohesive zone parameters, the load displacement behavior of the be.

Book excerpt: In December 1996, the then CEB established a Task Group with the main objective to elaborate design guidelines for the use of FRP reinforcement in accordance with the design format of the CEB-FIP Model Code and Eurocode2. With the merger of CEB and FIP into fib in 1998, this Task Group became fib TG 9.3 FRP Reinforcement for concrete structures in Commission 9 Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials and Systems. The Task Group consists of about 60 members, representing most European universities, research institutes and industrial companies working in the field of advanced composite reinforcement for concrete structures, as well as corresponding members from Canada, Japan and USA. Meetings are held twice a year and on the research level its work is supported by the EU TMR (European Union Training and Mobility of Researchers) Network "ConFibreCrete”. The work of fib TG 9.3 is performed by five working parties (WP): Material Testing and Characterization (MT&C) Reinforced Concrete (RC) Prestressed Concrete (PC) Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) Marketing and Applications (M&A) This technical report constitutes the work conducted as of to date by the EBR party. This bulletin gives detailed design guidelines on the use of FRP EBR, the practical execution and the quality control, based on the current expertise and state-of-the-art knowledge of the task group members. It is regarded as a progress report since it is not the aim of this report to cover all aspects of RC strengthening with composites. Instead, it focuses on those aspects that form the majority of the design problems. several of the topics presented are subject of ongoing research and development, and the details of some modelling approaches may be subject to future revisions. as knowledge in this field is advancing rapidly, the work of the EBR WP will continue. Inspite of this limit in scope, considerable effort has been made to present a bulletin that is today’s state-of-art in the area of strengthening of concrete structures by means of externally bonded FRP reinforcement.

Book excerpt: The differences in mechanical and bond properties of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) bars when compared to those of traditional steel reinforcement for reinforced concrete (RC) structures may affect the cracking and deformability behaviour of FRP RC members. This study investigates the bond behaviour between FRP reinforcement and concrete through experimental and numerical analysis. Experimental results on pull-out tests and direct tension tests are presented and discussed. A general procedure, derived from a cracking analysis based on slip and bond stresses, is used to study the deformability of FRP RC elements under tension. The tension stiffening effect is included via experimental nonlinear bond-slip law obtained from a laboratory pull-out test. The comparison between experimental data and numerical predictions of the reinforcement strain profile along the reinforcing bar during a tensile test confirms that the bond-based model adequately reproduces the redistribution of stresses after crack formation. Because the numerical model is flexible enough to include any "user-defined" bond-slip law and variable materials' properties, a parametric study is conducted.

Book excerpt: Concrete repair continues to be a subject of major interest to engineers and technologists worldwide. The concrete repair budget for the UK alone currently runs at some UKP 220 per annum. Some estimates have indicated that, worldwide, in 2010 the expenditure for maintenance and repair work will represent about 85% of the total expenditure in the construction field. It has been forecast that, in the same year in the USA, 50 billion dollars will be spent just for the restoration of deteriorated bridges and viaducts. An understanding of the latest techniques in repair and testing and inspection is thus crucial to the international construction industry. This book, with contributions from 34 countries, brings together the best in research, practical application, strategy and theory relating to concrete repair, testing and inspection, fire damage, composites and electro-chemical repair.

The interfacial bond behavior is fundamental to understand the overall structural performance of concrete structures strengthened with advanced composite materials. This study includes a comprehensive investigation of the bond behavior of composite-concrete joints with different fiber reinforced composite types. First, a direct approach to determine the bond-slip relationship for fiber reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM)-concrete joints based on fiber strain measurements was proposed. Then, an analytical solution to predict the full-range response of FRCM-concrete joints was derived by assuming a trilinear bond-slip relationship. The analytical results were compared with experimental load responses to indirectly determine the bond-slip relationship. Next, the experimental load response of steel fiber reinforced polymer (SRP)-concrete joints was explored by single-lap direct shear tests. Lastly, a novel non-destructive evaluation method - active microwave thermography - was used to detect the existence of initial interfacial defects in carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)-concrete joints, and to monitor the progressive debonding between CFRP and concrete"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: "Crack development in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is common in elements such as bridge decks. However, these cracks can impose significant problems over time, because they allow chlorides from deicing chemicals to infiltrate concrete which will then corrode steel bars as RC structures are exposed to harsh weather. In the last decade, composite reinforcement systems are internally or externally applied to concrete structures instead of traditional steel reinforcing bars, or to strengthen concrete elements in flexure and shear. However, studies regarding the long-term durability performance of composite reinforcement systems is limited. Therefore, in order to popularize the application of these systems, it is necessary to study the long-term properties and behaviors of concrete members reinforced with composite materials. This study includes three topics: 1. Long-term durability of concrete panels reinforced with steel and glass reinforced polymer (GFRP). The main objective of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties of GFRP bars extracted from concrete panels after seven plus years of field exposure and examine any microscopic damage to the GFRP fiber and/or matrix resin; 2. Durability of concrete elements reinforced with Steel Reinforced Polymer (SRP). The key purpose of this study is to assess the bond behavior of SRP-to-concrete systems and provide durability study of SRP strengthening systems to supplement ACI 440; 3. Assessment of existing FRP bridge structures exposed to field conditioning. This study focuses on investigating the physical inspection for the existing FRP bridges in Rolla, MO and to characterize GFRP bars extracted from Southview Bridge (MO), Walker Bridge (MO), and Sierrita de la Cruz Bridge (TX) and surrounding concrete after several years of service"--Abstract, page iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores the direct shear behavior between carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates and concrete. To study the push-off strength and slip relationship of externally bonded strengthening system, a new test setup is proposed herein. In this research, a total of 27 specimens are tested. The test variables include the maximum compressive strength of concrete, from 4000 to 12000 psi. With this test setup, it has been found to be able to investigate the direct shear condition between the CFRP laminates and concrete. Based on the present test results, empirical formulas to account for the push-off strength and slip relationship of various concrete compressive strengths are developed. This relationship enables further understanding of the transfer mechanism between the CFRP laminates and concrete. Also, the effect of salt water on the ultimate direct shear strength of the CFRP strengthening system is discussed.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) laminates have been used as externally bonded reinforcements for retrofitting and structural strengthening of concrete structures. The adequacy of the CFRP bonding highly depends on the bond integrity between the concrete and CFRP laminates. Considering the reliability of this bonding technique, premature debonding of laminates from the concrete substrate is a major concern. The bond performance may be influenced directly by various parameters; some of the parameters like surface wetness, surface preparation, presence of voids in concrete substrate and overhead versus on the top installation of CFRP laminate have been discussed in this study. During the installation of the composite system, the bond can be comprised due to poor workmanship or unsuitable environmental conditions; improper cure or installation or surface preparation can cause voids, inclusions, debonds and delamination at the CFRP-substrate level. In this study, assessment of the CFRP-concrete bond for beams strengthened in flexure was carried out. Non-Destructive evaluation methods using Ground Penetrating RADAR, Ultrasound Tomography, Thermography and Schmidt hammer were applied to detect possible disbonds between CFRP-Concrete interfaces. Ground Penetration RADAR was effective in finding the sub-surface defects that affect the bond quality, infrared thermography and ultrasound tomography could detect both surface and subsurface delamination. Further, destructive techniques were executed to determine the type of failure in the CFRP retrofitted beams to correlate it with the quality of the bond. This study may serve as a valuable reference for optimization and inspection of CFRP-Concrete bond at the interface, using Non-destructive testing devices for practical applications.
