Book excerpt: John Spargo (1876-1966) was a British progressivist writer and muckraker whose expose The Bitter Cry of Children explores the living conditions of children in poverty stricken households. As a young man he trained as a stonecutter, and became a lay Methodist minister. He was attracted to the socialist doctrines of early English marxist Henry Hyndman and would serve on the executive council of the Social Democratic Federation before immigrating to New York City in 1901, and to Vermont in 1909. He became a leader of the Socialist Party of America and wrote an early English-language biography of Karl Marx. Later, he formed the Social Democratic League of America. He would become the Director-Curator of the Bennington, Vermont Historical Museum and write several books on ceramics. He researched and wrote a booklet on the history of his family name. He also wrote Socialism: A Summary and Interpretation of Socialist Principles (1906), The Common Sense of Socialism (1908), Bolshevism: The Enemy of Political and Industrial Democracy (1919) and The Marx He Knew (1909).

Book Synopsis Liberal Bolshevism by : Alexander G. Markovsky
Download or read book Liberal Bolshevism written by Alexander G. Markovsky and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a Soviet émigré and scholar of Marxism, the book begins with the author’s recounting of the end of the Cold War. Despite the common perception that democracy defeated communism, the author presents evidence that the Democratic Party has adopted Marxism in a new philosophy he calls Liberal Bolshevism. Mr. Markovsky trucks the origins of Liberal Bolshevism back to the policies of Woodrow Wilson and FDR and chronicles the transformation of the Democratic Party into the Social Democratic Party. Through the prism of Marxism the author traces the rhythms and patterns of the toxic amalgamation of liberalism and socialism from Lenin to Obama and binds together the Democratic Party’s policies into a Marxist-socialist cause that American Social Democrats, just like their Soviet predecessors, are committed to achieving at all costs. Herein, the reader will find a reassessment of accepted postulates exposing the deeply rooted racism and anti-Semitism of the Democratic Party. The book also challenges vested views of socialism and capitalism. Overall, the work is intended as a dissident course of economics and political education. It is explosive and insightful.
Download or read book Intimate Enemies written by Igal Halfin and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2007 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimate Enemies examines the transformation of Bolshevik Party ideology, language, and power relations during the crucial period leading up to Stalin's seizure of power. Igal Halfin uncovers this evolution in the language of Bolshevism. This language defined the methods for judging true party loyalty-in what Halfin describes as an examination of the 'hermeneutics of the soul, ' and became the basis for prosecuting the Party's enemies, particularly the "intimate enemies" within the Party itself.

Book Synopsis The Fate of the Bolshevik Revolution by : Lara Douds
Download or read book The Fate of the Bolshevik Revolution written by Lara Douds and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a regime that promised utopian-style freedom end up delivering terror and tyranny? For some, the Bolsheviks were totalitarian and the descent was inevitable; for others, Stalin was responsible; for others still, this period in Russian history was a microcosm of the Cold War. The Fate of the Bolshevik Revolution reasons that these arguments are too simplistic. Rather, the journey from Bolshevik liberation to totalitarianism was riddled with unsuccessful experiments, compromises, confusion, panic, self-interest and over-optimism. As this book reveals, the emergence (and persistence) of the Bolshevik dictatorship was, in fact, the complicated product of a failed democratic transition. Drawing on long-ignored archival sources and original research, this fascinating volume brings together an international team of leading scholars to reconsider one of the most important and controversial questions of 20th-century history: how to explain the rise of the repressive Stalinist dictatorship.
