The subjects of mechanical stokers, economizers, and steam piping have been treated at considerable length, and the use and calculation of induced draught fans quite fully explained. Much new material on chimney draught, the result of work extending over a period of years, has been added, as has also a chapter on coal handling and coal-handling machinery. Nearly every chapter has been enlarged and the number of illustrations more than doubled. The chapter on combustion has been extended to cover oil burning and to include the most recent analyses of American coals, together with a detailed description of coal calorimetry as applied to the determination of the heating value of coal purchased on a "heat unit" basis. The chapters on staying riveted joints and boiler testing have each been extended. While the book was planned primarily for the use of students in technical schools, and in the two revisions has been increased so as to meet the needs of the students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, it is felt that the book may prove useful to engineers in general. The supporting data employed are based on modern steam locomotives equipped with superheater and brick arch and fed by means of a live - steam injector. The use of the exhaust steam for drafting the locomotive makes the locomotive power plant differ in principle from the marine or stationary power plant. In the latter the boiler is an independent unit, while in the former the boiler and the engine are interdependent inasmuch as the exhaust of the engine creates the draft for the boiler and the shutting down of the-engine renders the boiler inoperative. Separate the two by substituting mechanical draft for the exhaust jet and there is no reason why the locomotive power plant can not be fitted out with the devices which have been responsible for the low cost Of power generated in marine and stationary power plants. The problem is one of successful adaptation with reliability and moderate maintenance cost, within the present limitations Of clearances and other conditions under which the locomotive must Operate. Here, for the first time, the attempt is made to give the treatment that its importance demands. Although its introduction is evidence of a somewhat radical departure in certain features of boiler practice, yet extended and recent experience clearly indicates the permanence of this departure. Hereafter, the progressive engineer will not adopt the chimney as the sole means of draft produc tion, but will first carefully consider the respective advantages of the chimney and the fan, for the claims of the latter to superiority cannot be disregarded. Manifestly, the individual who in the present day is to decide between the two methods, requires a clear presentation of their respective merits, such as is attempted in this work. Its object is two-fold: First, to instruct by a lucid discussion of the entire subject, with such supplementary information as may be necessary to show the superiority of mechanical draft. The steam boiler up to now is by no means a diminishing quantity, and any chemical knowledge which will increase its efficiency, preserve its life, and save coal deserves thought and consideration. Coal in the future is most likely to'be valued for its chemical products now destroyed in the furnace. Coal will have to be economized, and one way out of the difficulty will be to remove its valuable volatile products by distillation and use the residual cokes for steam-raising purposes. This may present difficulties at first, but these difficulties are not insuperable, and the same skill which has brought the furnace to its present state of perfection will be able to adapt it to the altered conditions. If it be more beneficial to the human race to utilize benzole for the manufacture of dyes and drugs than to burn it for raising steam, then the valuable benzole will be removed and the carbonaceous residues become the fuel of the future. Many of the chemical reactions herein described have been gathered from a long practical experience with high-pressure boilers working under varied-circumstances and conditions, and the analyses given in the text are original analyses made in the course of a somewhat extended practice. So far as possible, technical language and expressions have been avoided. The facts stated and the conclusions drawn have been described in the language of everyday life, so that those without more than a very limited acquaintance with chemistry may be able to understand and appreciate the results, and a chapter has been added explaining and illustra ting such technical expressions as it has been found necessary to use.
