Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under this title, Dr. Edward Benes, general secretary of the Czechoslovak National Council of Paris, has just published a book setting forth the demands of the Bohemians and Slovaks. It is an excellent presentation of arguments with which readers of this Review are familiar. After a brief account of the Bohemian history, with a special chapter devoted to the wrongs of the Slovaks, the author describes the Pan-German plans which included the crushing of the Czechoslovaks as the first great obstacle to the German dreams of Central Europe. The chapter on Czechoslovaks and the War gathers together the most startling instances of oppression to which Bohemia has been subject since the war began. As the book was published in London and was intended primarily for English readers, a chapter has been added on the relations of England and Bohemia. A very full bibliography is a valuable feature of this little book of 132 pages. Henry Wickham Steed, for many years correspondent of the London Times in Vienna, author of the "Hapsburg Monarchy", writes the Introduction. He makes a strong argument for the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and quotes an old parody from Macmillan's Magazine of 1866: Who is Austria? What is she? That all our swells commend her? Dogged, proud and dull is she; The heavens such gifts did lend her That she might destroyed be. But what is Austria? Is it fair To name among the nations Some Germans who have clutched the hair Of divers populations, And having clutched, keep tugging there? We commend this book most warmly to our readers. If you want an American friend ignorant of Bohemia to take interest in Bohemia's independence, present him this book. It may be ordered from the Bohemian National Alliance, 3639 West Twenty-Sixth Street, Chicago. The famous Pilsner beer has ceased to be. No more barley can be spared for the making of beer. The great burghers' brewery is now making soft drinks, just like the breweries in the dry states, and the hops are fed to cattle. -The Czechoslovak Review, Vol. 1 [1917]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bohemia's Case for Independence The publication of this little book is timely. The British public, always prone to look upon "foreign affairs" as mysterious and unintelligible, has been groping its way, during the last two-and-a-half years, towards some dim knowledge of the causes of the war and of the fundamental conditions of a lasting peace. Its cognitions are still rudimentary. The neglect of generations cannot be made good in so brief a period, even under the stimulus of the greatest struggle known to history. Yet, though it be not possible to "cram" for the examination which the British peoples will presently be required to pass if a satisfactory peace is to end the war, it is possible to inculcate upon them the broad lessons of history, geography and ethnology in such a way as to give them a standard by which to judge situations and events. In this little volume, Dr. Bene, the distinguished collaborator of Professor Masaryk, sets forth with clearness and cogency "the case for the independence of Bohemia." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calamity of World War I spawned dozens of liberation movements among ethnic and religious groups throughout the world. None was more successful in realizing the goal of self-determination than the Czechs and Slovaks. From its humble beginning the Czecho-Slovak liberation movement grew into an impressive struggle that was waged from the capitals of Western Europe to the frozen steppes of Siberia. Its ranks included exiled propagandists, war prisoners-turned-legionaries and conspirators inside Austria-Hungary. This book shows how these groups overcame their estrangements and coordinated their efforts to win independence for their homeland. It also examines the consequences of the Czecho-Slovaks' achievements, including their entanglement in the Russian Civil War and their impact on the postwar settlements that redrew the political boundaries of Central Europe.

Book Synopsis Central and Eastern European Histories and Heritages in Video Games by : Michał Mochocki

This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the representations of Central and Eastern European histories in digital games. Focusing on games that examine a range of national histories and heritages from across Central and Eastern Europe, the volume looks beyond the diversity of the local histories depicted in games, and the audience reception of these histories, to show a diversity of approaches which can be used in examining historical games – from postcolonialism to identity politics to heritage studies. The book includes chapters on Serbia, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Hungary, Estonia, Slovakia, Czechia, Finland, and (a Western guest with regional connections) Luxembourg. Through the lens of video games, the authors address how nations struggle with the legacies of war, colonialism, and religious strife that have been a part of nation-building - but also how victimized cultures can survive, resist, and sometimes prevail. Appealing primarily to scholars in the fields of game studies, heritage studies, postcolonial criticism, and media studies, this book will be particularly useful for the subfields of historical game studies and postcolonial game studies.
