Book excerpt: Objectives: To investigate the relations between body shame, fear of self-compassion and disordered eating in an adolescent sample. Background and aims: Body shame has been consistently associated with the development and maintenance of disordered eating-related difficulties. However, the mechanisms underlying this association are not fully understood. In this study, we sought to examine fear of self-compassion as a potential mediator between body shame and disordered eating. Materials and methods: Two hundred and thirty-two adolescents (152 girls, mean age=16.09) participated in the study. After receiving the informed consent signed by their parents and themselves, adolescents completed a battery of questionnaires evaluating body shame, fear of self-compassion and eating disorders symptoms. Results: Correlation analyses revealed significant and positive relationships between body shame, fear of self-compassion and eating psychopathology. The mediation analysis indicated that fear of self-compassion mediates the relationship between body shame and eating disorders symptoms. The model explained 47% of the variance in disordered eating. Conclusions: These findings seem to support that adolescents who tend to be ashamed of their own body tend to be resistant in having a compassionate attitude toward themselves, which may trigger maladaptive eating attitudes and behaviors. The results of this study suggest potential avenues for prevention and intervention programs.
