Book excerpt: Western culture has increasingly valued physical appearance and in particular slenderness in the last 20 years. Unrealistic targets of thinness and excessive weight loss have led to eating disorders, the idea of obligatory exercise and other mental health problems. The concept of dissatisfaction with one's body image is driven home by images of ultra-thin models appearing in newspapers, magazines and television. This book brings together leading international research in this alarming and growing field.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Researchers have found that a significant number of women report dissatisfaction with their bodies (Cash & Henry, 1995; Cash, Morrow, et al., 2004; Heatherton et al., 1997). Many researchers consider dissatisfaction with one's body one of the most important aspects of body image disturbance (BID). Body image disturbance results in a number of negative consequences for women, such as disordered eating (Cash & Deagle, 1997; Stice, 2002), depression (Denniston et al., 1992; Mintz & Betz, 1986), social problems (Cash & Szymanski, 1995; Cash et al., 2004; Harris, 1994), and overall life dissatisfaction (Cash & Fleming, 2002). Research on body image has attempted to address the sociocultural pressure placed on women to live up to the thin ideal and the subsequent impact that has on body image disturbance (Fallon, 1990; Striegel-Moore, Silberstein, & Rodin, 1986; Thompson et al., 1999). In fact, it has recently been suggested that the focus on physical attractiveness in gender identity development may play an important role in the prevalence of BID, and contribute to the epidemic of body image disturbance seen in women (Fallon, 1990; Thompson et al., 1999). Both the feminist identity development model (Downing & Roush, 1985) and the womanist identity development model (Helms, 1990, as cited in Ossana et al., 1992) attempt to explain the process a woman goes through in developing a sense of herself as a woman. Research has been mixed regarding the relationship between feminist identity development and body image disturbance (Cash et al., 1997; Dionne et al., 1995; Kelson et al., 1990; Mintz & Betz, 1986; Peterson et al., 2006; Snyder and Hasbrouck, 1996). Relative to the feminist model, the womanist identity development model may be a better model for addressing identity development of women who fall outside of the feminist category since it does not require the adoption of a feminist political stance (Ossana et al., 1992). However, little research has been done exploring the relationship between womanist identity attitudes and body image disturbance in women. The purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between body image disturbance, psychological investment in appearance, influence of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, psychological distress, and womanist identity development in college women. A total of 155 women were recruited from introductory psychology courses at a university in the Southeastern United States. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and questionnaires assessing body image disturbance, psychological investment in appearance, influence of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, womanist identity attitudes, and psychological distress. Hiearchical regressions were conducted to examine the hypotheses. Pearson product-moment correlations were used to assess the relationships among variables of interest and to assess for multicolinearity. Post-hoc independent samples t-tests were utilized to examine racial differences and differences between sorority and non-sorority members. Results showed psychological investment in appearance and influence of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance accounted for significant variance in body image disturbance. It was also found that body image disturbance, self-evaluative salience, and Immersion-Emersion attitudes predicted higher levels of psychological distress. In addition, race and sorority membership predicted levels of influence of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance and motivational salience. Contrary to predictions, womanist identity attitudes were not related to psychological investment in appearance or influence of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance. Immersion-Emersion attitudes were related to body image disturbance, but not in the expected direction. Several reasons are proposed for the unexpected findings, including issues with the womanist identity development model and sample characteristics. Limitations of the study are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Body image dissatisfaction is a negative preoccupation with one’s weight and body shape (Rodin et al., 1984). Given the gendered nature of body image dissatisfaction and societal expectations of physical attractiveness for women, it has been referred to as “normative discontent” for most females (McKinley & Hyde, 1996; Rodin et al., 1984). College women are particularly at risk--65-78% of college females report body image dissatisfaction and weight concerns as stressors (Gillen & Lefkowitz, 2006; Neighbors & Sobal, 2007). Untreated body image dissatisfaction can lead to serious consequences for mental health and quality of life (Koening & Wasserman, 1995; Mond et al., 2013; Muenning et al., 2008). Despite most college campuses offering therapeutic options, women experience barriers in seeking treatment such as limited time, lack of urgency and perceived need for therapeutic intervention, and a desire to independently resolve concerns (Lipson et al., 2016). Thus, women in college may turn to self-help resources such as workbooks, rather than seek out formal treatment. A workbook that utilizes both empirically supported CBT and feminist approaches may be effective in helping college women to manage body image dissatisfaction and to eliminate treatment barriers (Jarry & Berardi, 2004; Peterson et al., 2006). Combining CBT and feminist approaches may target the cognitive, behavioral, and sociocultural components of body image dissatisfaction. To justify the creation of an additional body image workbook, current workbooks were reviewed to determine target populations and treatment approaches. Results from this evaluation indicated a need for a workbook that utilizes both CBT and feminism and is focused on addressing subclinical body image concerns that are distinctive to college women.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Previous research has demonstrated the influential role of physical appearance-related feedback in the development of body image and eating disturbances. Teasing and negative feedback have been established as strong correlates and predictors of body dissatisfaction, maladaptive eating behaviors, and psychological distress. However, very little is known about ambiguous appearance-related feedback and its impact on others. The current study sought to explore this area with an experimental study to examine the effects of ambiguous appearance-related feedback on body image, mood states, and intentions to use body change strategies. Undergraduate women (N=146) were randomly assigned to an ambiguous appearance-related or ambiguous nonappearance-related feedback condition. Body image, mood states, and intentions to diet, exercise, and use unhealthy weight control methods were assessed before and after feedback was provided by a confederate. Results indicated no significant differences between feedback conditions in body image and mood states. The mean trends for all mood state, with the exception of anger, indicated better mood states after ambiguous appearance-related feedback compared to after ambiguous nonappearance-related feedback. State anger was greater in the ambiguous appearance-related feedback condition suggesting that this particular type of feedback was interpreted in a negative manner. Further, there was a significant difference between feedback conditions for intentions to diet and use bulimic behaviors, with lower levels in the ambiguous appearance-related feedback condition. No significant differences were found for intentions to exercise. State appearance comparison was not shown to mediate the relationship between ambiguous feedback and body image, mood states, or intentions to use body change strategies. Trait appearance satisfaction, appearance comparison, appearance schematicity, and thin ideal internalization were found to moderate the relationship between ambiguous feedback and state depression. Trait appearance comparison moderated the relationship between ambiguous feedback and intentions to use bulimic behaviors. Exploratory analyses conducted with subsamples developed using high versus low levels of trait disturbance showed significant results for the subsample based on trait appearance comparison levels. The findings are discussed in the context of possible reasons for the unexpected responses to the ambiguous appearance-related versus nonappearance-related feedback. The limitations of the study and directions for future research are also noted.

Book excerpt: Women attend college to further themselves through education, but are confronted with traditional concepts of beauty and stereotypes regarding physical appearance. For many women, college is a paradox between the serious nature of intellectual curiosity and the pull to conform to societal expectations. These expectations can be powerful forces as the students define themselves through their years in college. This study was conducted in order to determine if a correlation exists between academic achievement and body image in college women. The McCroskey Image Fixation Questionnaire was chosen for this study because it was designed to determine an individual's fixation with his or her physical appearance. The questionnaire was distributed to undergraduate college women at three institutions of higher education. The institutions included the following: a public, research-focused university; a public, comprehensive university; and a private, liberal arts college. The survey instrument included 30 true/false items. The number of true statements indicated how sensitive the participant was regarding her physical appearance. Six hundred eighteen surveys were used in the analysis. Participants were asked to self-report their grade point average and this was correlated with the student's image fixation score. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation demonstrated an inverse relationship between academic performance and body image, suggesting that a healthier body image was positively linked to a higher grade point average. The findings also suggested further investigation. Qualitative research may be warranted to gain a better understanding of how women with different grade point averages feel about their bodies. This information could be helpful to health educators, academic advisors, and student affairs professionals. (Contains 4 tables.).
