Book excerpt: “Blue Monday leaves readers with the promise of intriguing tales to come” —People (four-star review) Internationally bestselling authors Nicci Gerard and Sean French, writing as Nicci French, have sold more than eight million copies of their books worldwide. But nothing they’ve written written before has grabbed the attention of reviewers and readers like Blue Monday and its iconic heroine, Frieda Klein. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called it a “superb psychological thriller . . . with brooding atmosphere, sustained suspense, a last-minute plot twist, and memorable cast of characters.” In Tuesday’s Gone, a London social worker makes a routine home visit only to discover her client, Michelle Doyce, serving afternoon tea to a naked, decomposing corpse. With no clues as to the dead man’s identity, Chief Inspector Karlsson again calls upon Frieda for help. She discovers that the body belongs to Robert Poole, con man extraordinaire. But Frieda can’t shake the feeling that the past isn’t done with her yet. Did someone kill Poole to embroil her in the investigation? And if so, is Frieda herself the next victim? A masterpiece of paranoia, Tuesday’s Gone draws readers inexorably into a fractured and faithless world as it brilliantly confirms Frieda Klein as a quintessential heroine for our times.

Book excerpt: In 1932, at the height of the Great Depression, two young people meet and fall in love. Llewellyn Wright (Bob), Frank Lloyd Wright's youngest child, whose adolescence was marked by the public scandals surrounding his father's private life, is struggling to begin a private law practice in Chicago. Elizabeth Kehler (Betty), daughter of a Chicago artist who abandoned the family when she was still in the womb, is working as an intake counselor at the Milwaukee Vocational School. Their fervent correspondence over a 10-month courtship period is witty, sassy and poignant, as they grapple with their passionate feelings and try to create a financially stable marriage in the midst of the 20th century's most serious economic crisis. The couple's daughter, a scholar of French literature, has written an Introduction telling their story before and after the courtship. 35 illustrations, extensive footnotes and an Index illuminate the family and social history behind the letters.

Book excerpt: In a world fractured by dividing lines of politics, economics, gender, and race, we are hungry for connection and community, for places where we are loved and accepted in all our frailty. Tubby has a broken heart. Lenore needs something to sing about. Eugenia is afraid of change. Bruce still fights the war in Iraq. Through it all, Pastor Bob, with the help of the Holy Spirit, tends the flock entrusted to his care. These twenty-four interwoven fables of faith, set in the Adirondacks, use abundant love, gentle humor, and the timeless truth of Scripture to portray what it means to be a church family. Blest be the tie that binds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a boy, I was lucky enough to be introduced an elderly gentleman by the name of Robert R. (Bob) Huttle (Mr. Huttle to me). I remember Mr. Huttle as a man of many interesting stories, and experiences. Mr. Huttle was a good friend of my father, and for quite a number of years was sort of an informal member of our family, being in attendance for Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, and any other family gatherings. His little home, along with its menagerie of exotic fowl in a little community called Annapolis, Washington was always a most fun place to visit. Throughout his life, Bob was an avid photographer with a genuine interest in people, who religiously recorded all that, was going on around him in his more than interesting life. The walls of his home were covered with pictures and memorabilia of that lifetime. There were times when Bob would take out his old picture albums and show my brother and me pictures of his times up in the State of Alaska. I always remember that these times seemed to be events he treasured, and each picture came with a story that would flow off his lips with obvious pleasure. After coming to America, serving in the U.S. Marine Corp., Bob spent 1933 - 1934 living his dream on the Alaskan Kenai Peninsula near what was then called Birchwood Creek (now Bear Creek) on Tustumena Lake, as a hunter and an amateur trapper (as he referred to himself). In January of 1937, Bob was hired as a patrolman with the Anchorage Police Department and 21 days later he had to give up his beat to come indoors as the Acting Police Chief, replacing the then seriously ill Chief of Police Ernie Amundsen.

Book excerpt: Meet Bob Tuesday. Conceived at a concert, born in a nuclear wasteland, raised in a factory sweatshop making toys for luckier children, things just never seem to go Tuesday's way. Somehow, though, against the brutal odds of an uncaring reality, Tuesday survives on pure rat cunning and a tongue sharper than a surgical scalpel dipped in old brown vinegar. Stupid, ugly, lazy, viciously offensive and with no real talents beyond amateur flower arranging, Tuesday will attempt to remain alive in a galaxy full of imminent, explosive, torturous death... The author insists this is NOT an autobiography and lives west of Sydney, Australia. If this book is successful, he won't become a chef after all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verna Lathrop Kern’s life story began with birth on a small dairy farm near the village of Greenwood, Illinois on the first day of November 1927. As a farm girl, later living in Greenwood village, she was the younger (by six years) sister of one brother, parented by a skilled carpenter-cabinet maker and a mother who viewed life pessimistically A young high-school gym teacher left seeds of women’s worth within some of her students, and the athletically talented and able student, Verna, took that potential to heart. First of her extended family to propose going to college, her mother asked “On what, buttons?” No—fully on her own personal earnings (from work as bank teller, factory worker, employed student living in cooperative housing), she went off to the University of Illinois. A blind date in her sophomore year brought together the two who would share 66 years of their lives—ending with her death in 2013. Always physically active—tennis, sailing, biking, jogging; scholarly—highest ranking in her college class; innovative—created academic-advising program in her Iowa State University department; wife and mother—two children, three grandchildren, all high achievers; care-giver to an aged mother—who lived 300 miles away; herself a winner over five forms of cancer; lover, companion, and fellow-traveler/sometimes resident with Bob (the blind date) in far places on four continents and islands of the Pacific.

Book excerpt: Comedy is crucial to how the English see themselves. This book considers that proposition through a series of case studies of popular English comedies and comedians in the twentieth century, ranging from the Carry On films to the work of Mike Leigh and contemporary sitcoms such as The Royle Family, and from George Formby to Alan Bennett and Roy 'Chubby' Brown. Relating comic traditions to questions of class, gender, sexuality and geography, A National Joke looks at how comedy is a cultural thermometer, taking the temperature of its times. It asks why vulgarity has always delighted English audiences, why camp is such a strong thread in English humour, why class influences what we laugh at and why comedy has been so neglected in most theoretical writing about cultural identity. Part history and part polemic, it argues that the English urgently need to reflect on who they are, who they have been and who they might become, and insists that comedy offers a particularly illuminating location for undertaking those reflections.
