Two very different yet equally terrifying stories . . . Werewolves takes readers into the life of a high school girl-turned-werewolf as she makes her transformation. With a fresh take on the lore and legend, it gives fans a ripping tale to sink their teeth into. In Zombies, a biologist’s journal is found in the aftermath of the attack. This frightening new contribution to the massively popular zombie resurgence will keep fans on the edge of their seats right up to the very end. Praise for Zombies “Influenced by Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, Zombies is a genuinely chilling and logical look at a zombie invasion. The matter-of-fact descriptions of the symptoms and effects, coupled with the detailed drawings of both victims and scenarios make it a creepy read. . . . A tremendous addition to any zombie book collection.” —Sfcrowsnest

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inescapably controversial study envisions, defines, and theorizes an area that Laura Wright calls vegan studies. We have an abundance of texts on vegans and veganism including works of advocacy, literary and popular fiction, film and television, and cookbooks, yet until now, there has been no study that examines the social and cultural discourses shaping our perceptions of veganism as an identity category and social practice. Ranging widely across contemporary American society and culture, Wright unpacks the loaded category of vegan identity. She examines the mainstream discourse surrounding and connecting animal rights to (or omitting animal rights from) veganism. Her specific focus is on the construction and depiction of the vegan body--both male and female--as a contested site manifest in contemporary works of literature, popular cultural representations, advertising, and new media. At the same time, Wright looks at critical animal studies, human-animal studies, posthumanism, and ecofeminism as theoretical frameworks that inform vegan studies (even as they differ from it). The vegan body, says Wright, threatens the status quo in terms of what we eat, wear, and purchase--and also in how vegans choose not to participate in many aspects of the mechanisms undergirding mainstream culture. These threats are acutely felt in light of post-9/11 anxieties over American strength and virility. A discourse has emerged that seeks, among other things, to bully veganism out of existence as it is poised to alter the dominant cultural mindset or, conversely, to constitute the vegan body as an idealized paragon of health, beauty, and strength. What better serves veganism is exemplified by Wright's study: openness, debate, inquiry, and analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New insights into the microbiome, epigenetics, and cognition are radically challenging our very idea of what it means to be 'human', while an explosion of neo-materialist thinking in the humanities has fostered a renewed appreciation of the formative powers of a dynamic material environment. The Matter of History brings these scientific and humanistic ideas together to develop a bold, new post-anthropocentric understanding of the past, one that reveals how powerful organisms and things help to create humans in all their dimensions, biological, social, and cultural. Timothy J. LeCain combines cutting-edge theory and detailed empirical analysis to explain the extraordinary late-nineteenth century convergence between the United States and Japan at the pivotal moment when both were emerging as global superpowers. Illustrating the power of a deeply material social and cultural history, The Matter of History argues that three powerful things - cattle, silkworms, and copper - helped to drive these previously diverse nations towards a global 'Great Convergence'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Halloween, best friends Cookie and Broccoli revel in funny tricks and sweet treats in this early graphic novel that’s all about the true meaning of bravery and not judging others before you get to know them. In the first story, Broccoli’s not a fan of his classmates’ scary Halloween pranks, so his best buddy Cookie loans Broccoli his superhero costume—because Super Broccoli isn't afraid of anything! That is, until the ultimate fright has Broccoli fleeing for the big, scary woods behind their school, where he comes across someone in a Sasquatch costume. (It is just a costume . . . right?) Then, in the second story, Cookie and Broccoli’s classmates learn an important lesson about scaring others and making assumptions about newcomers (yes, even big, hairy Sasquatches). And in the final story, Cookie has to choose between his friends or his obsession with Halloween candy! Fans of early graphic novel series like Pizza and Taco and Narwhal and Jelly will adore this latest book in the Cookie & Broccoli series, which is chock-full of punny costumes (a garlic dressed like a vampire, anyone?), silly asides from the duo’s good friend Blueberry, and even a fun Halloween-themed activity for readers at the end of the book.

Today, zombies and vampires have taken over TV shows, comic books, cartoons, video games, and movies. Zombies, Vampires, and Philosophy drags the theories of famous philosophers like Socrates and Descartes into the territory of the undead, exploring questions like: Why do vampires and vegetarians share a similar worldview? Why is understanding zombies the key to health care reform? And what does "healthy in mind and body" mean for vampires and zombies? Answers to these questions and more await readers brave enough to make this fun, philosophical foray into the undead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divided into four thematic sections, What's Eating You? explores the deeper significance of food on screen-the ways in which they reflect (or challenge) our deepest fears about consuming and being consumed. Among the questions it asks are: How do these films mock our taboos and unsettle our notions about the human condition? How do they critique our increasing focus on consumption? In what ways do they hold a mirror to our taken-for-granteds about food and humanity, asking if what we eat truly matters? Horror narratives routinely grasp those questions and spin them into nightmares. Monstrous “others” dine on forbidden fare; the tables of consumption are turned, and the consumer becomes the consumed. Overindulgence, as Le Grande Bouffe (1973) and Street Trash (1987) warn, can kill us, and occasionally, as films like The Stuff (1985) and Poultrygeist (2006) illustrate, our food fights back. From Blood Feast (1963) to Sweeney Todd (2007), motion pictures have reminded us that it is an “eat or be eaten” world.

Book excerpt: Shortly after gaining independence from Britain, the island nation of Dominica implemented a farsighted policy protecting most of its biologically diverse rainforest as a national preserve. Former US Park Service Naturalist Michael Tritico traveled to Dominica intent on resting from his highly stressful confrontations in Louisianas ecological wars in hope of working as a volunteer in the new Dominican Park Service. Unfortunately, and unknown to him, people allegedly working for the Ku Klux Klan had also planned to travel from Louisiana to Dominica, though their intentions were much less benign. They had a plan for capturing the island, a scheme called Operation Red Dog. Although the invaders were stopped in New Orleans, US officials had alerted Dominican authorities to be on the lookout for any possible terrorists who might have slipped through the American dragnet. Michael was faced with these bizarre circumstances immediately after landing on the island. Despite interrogations and cryptic warnings from both Dominican and American officials, he attempted to pursue his original plans, experiencing grand moments during his nine days there, such as a beautiful tour of the Indian River and the islands first nocturnal zombie hunt. In this memoir, he recalls his time on the island and reflects on what it has to offer, considering his misadventures to be a divinely orchestrated episode meant to draw attention to a potential model the island of Dominica provides.
