Book Synopsis Fourscore and More: The Times Of My Life by : K. Robert Kern
Download or read book Fourscore and More: The Times Of My Life written by K. Robert Kern and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four Score and More finds the author in his 87th year. That life began at the end of 1923, embracing the Great Depression that devalued our over-mortgaged farm in Pike County, Illinois; 10 years of semi-privation saw it paid off. Even so, The Times of My Life knew both up-times and down-times in that decade, good practice for the rest of a long life. A one-room country school brought education early into my life, and education led to most of the best up-times to follow. The first degree (bachelor of science in agriculture, University of Illinois) brought me across the threshold into the wider world, with some academic problems and a war to deal with before I got there. University life brought boons, none greater than linking with the love and companion of the next 64 years (still counting): the anchor of family, herself a high achiever and inspiration and mentor to me and two beloved children—and three grandchildren. Two degrees followed: M.S., technical journalism, Iowa State University, and Ph.D.(first in the extended family), behavioral communication, University of Wisconsin. One career was 30 years of faculty tenure as professor of journalism and mass communication and leader of a staff of educational-media producers. Early retirement (age 56) opened the way for two decades of work abroad: three international agricultural research centers and then private consulting in agricultural and environmental communication, from a few weeks to months and years in over 40 countries on five continents.

Barb gave birth to six children during the next ten years. During this time, we made eight physical household moves, four of the relocations were made with newborn babies in tow! In 1974, we made the difficult decision to leave the Catholic Church, and have been actively involved in Bible Churches ever since. Who would believe our schedule? We participated in every type of volunteer service available, including: basketball and soccer coach, Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teachers, and always time for family dinners. Barb was a stay-at-home mom, and eventually achieved an Interior Design degree. I worked for one employer for almost 50 years, which included five different companies, and positions from Apprentice to Director. Now comes our together time. In 1985, Barb started to accompany me on business travel trips. We have traveled extensively: Europe, Canada, Alaska, Mexico, Caribbean, China, Russia and South Africa. Along the way, we have owned 36 automobiles, one truck and one motorcycle. Please come along for the ride of our lifetimes; we hope that you will enjoy it half as much as we have!
Book Synopsis The Measure of Our Age by : M.T. Connolly
Download or read book The Measure of Our Age written by M.T. Connolly and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expert on elder justice maps the challenges of aging, how things go wrong, and presents powerful tools we can use to forge better long lives for ourselves, our families, and our communities. As tens of millions of Americans are living longer lives, longevity is creating challenges that cut across race, class, and gender. Caregivers help older relatives for “free,” but with high costs to themselves in time, money, jobs, and health. Scammers target countless seniors. The institutions built to protect older people—like nursing homes and guardianship—too often harm them instead. And epidemics of isolation and loneliness make older people vulnerable to all sorts of harm. In The Measure of Our Age, elder justice expert and MacArthur “genius” grant recipient, M.T. Connolly investigates the systems we count on to protect us as we age. Weaving first-person accounts, her own experience, and shocking investigative reporting, she exposes a reality that has long been hidden and sometimes actively covered up. But her investigation also reveals reasons for hope within everyone’s grasp. Connolly’s strategies and action plans for navigating the many challenges of aging will appeal to a wide range of readers—adult children caring for aging parents; policymakers trying to do the right thing; and, should we be so lucky as to live to old age, all of us. This book transforms how we think about aging.
