Book Synopsis The Boarding Pass by : Betty Gossell
Download or read book The Boarding Pass written by Betty Gossell and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world and how we perceive it has changed drastically, even in my relatively short life span. The planet has gotten smaller and simpler to traverse. Stereotypes have been discarded and new ones erected. Definitions of success, family, and happiness all have undergone massive renovations, but there are a few truths that hold. We still glorify the special moments in life, those with measurable quantities of interest. And we shun and almost dread the ordinary. It seems that we must be reminded that even in the most exemplary life, a snapshot may reveal that which is static and mundane. So how would it be possible to find a true cross section of life among ordinary people? That would probably depend upon your definition of ordinary. Maybe its running to the grocery store to pick up food for your family for the week. Maybe its standing in line at the bank to deposit a paycheck. Maybe ordinary is pushing a lawnmower or a swing. Maybe its sitting in a classroom, a traffic jam, or an airplane seat. Though our actions and even our words cannot always be revolutionary, even the most cynical among us cannot deny that chance encounters and other so-called ordinary events have the potential to change our little piece of the world. These unsuspecting snapshots may not start or end a war. They may not crumble an empire or spark a new dream. But that they exist is cause for research into the human condition, those warring desires for stability and change. Only a little dissection will show that everyone has a storya past, a future. Every person has a place of origin and a destination, as well as somewhere in between. And somewhere on this journey, for every blessed one of us, there are momentsmore frequently than you would expectwhen we are the direct opposite of ordinary.
Book Synopsis Redesigning America’s Community Colleges by : Thomas R. Bailey
Download or read book Redesigning America’s Community Colleges written by Thomas R. Bailey and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, 1,200 community colleges enroll over ten million students each year—nearly half of the nation’s undergraduates. Yet fewer than 40 percent of entrants complete an undergraduate degree within six years. This fact has put pressure on community colleges to improve academic outcomes for their students. Redesigning America’s Community Colleges is a concise, evidence-based guide for educational leaders whose institutions typically receive short shrift in academic and policy discussions. It makes a compelling case that two-year colleges can substantially increase their rates of student success, if they are willing to rethink the ways in which they organize programs of study, support services, and instruction. Community colleges were originally designed to expand college enrollments at low cost, not to maximize completion of high-quality programs of study. The result was a cafeteria-style model in which students pick courses from a bewildering array of choices, with little guidance. The authors urge administrators and faculty to reject this traditional model in favor of “guided pathways”—clearer, more educationally coherent programs of study that simplify students’ choices without limiting their options and that enable them to complete credentials and advance to further education and the labor market more quickly and at less cost. Distilling a wealth of data amassed from the Community College Research Center (Teachers College, Columbia University), Redesigning America’s Community Colleges offers a fundamental redesign of the way two-year colleges operate, stressing the integration of services and instruction into more clearly structured programs of study that support every student’s goals.

Book Synopsis Policies and Research in Identity Management by : Elisabeth de Leeuw
Download or read book Policies and Research in Identity Management written by Elisabeth de Leeuw and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-08-26 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: st The world of the 21 century is, more than ever, global and impersonal. Criminal and terrorist threats, both physical and on the Internet, increase by the day. The demand for better methods of identification and access control is growing, not only in companies and organisations but also in the world at large. At the same time, such security measures have to be balanced with means for protecting the privacy of users. Identity management is put under pressure, due to the growing number of frauds who want to hide their true identity. This challenges the information security research community to focus on interdisciplinary and holistic approaches while retaining the benefits of previous research efforts. In this context, the IFIP Working Group 11.6 on Identity Management has been founded in August 2006. The intention of the Working Group is to offer a broad forum for the exchange of knowledge and for the tracking and discussion of issues and new developments. In this, we take an interdisciplinary approach. Scientists as well as practitioners, from government and business, who are involved in the field of identity management are welcome to participate. The IDMAN 2007 Conference on Policies and Research in Identity Management was the very first conference organized by this Working Group. We aim to organize conferences bi-annually. The IDMAN 2007 Conference has been centered around the theme of National Identity Management or, in other words, identity management in the public sector.
