Book Synopsis The World by Design by : A. Eugene Kohn
Download or read book The World by Design written by A. Eugene Kohn and published by RosettaBooks. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharing stories and inspiring lessons on leadership and design, one architect explains how he helped build one of the world’s most successful firms Founded on July 4, 1976, Kohn Pedersen Fox quickly became a darling of the press with groundbreaking buildings such as the headquarters for the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) in New York, 333 Wacker Drive in Chicago, the Procter & Gamble headquarters in Cincinnati, and the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC. By the early 1990s, when most firms in the U.S. were struggling to survive a major recession, KPF was busy with significant buildings in London, Germany, Canada, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia—pioneering a model of global practice that has influenced architecture, design, and creative-services firms ever since. Like any other business, though, KPF has stumbled along the way and wrestled with crises. But through it all, it has remained innovative in an ever-changing field that often favors the newest star on the horizon. Now in its fifth decade, the firm has shaped skylines and cities around the world with iconic buildings such as the World Financial Center in Shanghai, the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong, the DZ Bank Tower in Frankfurt, the Heron Tower in London, and Hudson Yards in New York. Forthright and engaging, Kohn examines both award-winning achievements and missteps in his 50-year career in architecture. In the process, he shows how his firm, KPF, has helped change the buildings and cities where we live, work, learn, and play. “A must-read for all of those who love cities and the buildings and skylines that define them.” —Stephen M. Ross, chairman and founder of The Related Companies

Book Synopsis Francis Kéré and Iwan Baan: Momentum of Light by :
Download or read book Francis Kéré and Iwan Baan: Momentum of Light written by and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two stars of contemporary architecture explore the unique handling of light and heat in the architecture of Burkina Faso Across the African continent, but especially in the sub-Saharan regions, the light has a particularly stark quality, which becomes most apparent in relation to older buildings. Before electricity, architecture was required to make use of the sun as a light source within a building, while also protecting its inhabitants from the heat. This resulted in vernacular architecture that features very few or small openings, which consequently render the inside of a building near pitch black, while the outside is illuminated by sunshine that bears down mercilessly. On the initiative of the lighting technology company Zumtobel Group, photographer Iwan Baan (born 1975) and architect Francis Kéré (born 1965) set out to capture how the sun's natural light cycle shapes vernacular architecture in Burkina Faso with little to no artificial light sources. They traveled to three exemplary locations: communal compounds in Gando; the main mosque of Bobo Dioulasso; and the terraced houses in Dano. Baan's pictures are accompanied by architectural sketches by Francis Kéré, who himself grew up in this light environment and whose architecture is inspired by it. The stunning photographs are printed using a special technique, to give a sense of being immersed in the very light conditions documented here.

Book Synopsis 3D Thinking in Design and Architecture by : Roger Burrows
Download or read book 3D Thinking in Design and Architecture written by Roger Burrows and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new interdisciplinary perspective on architecture and geometry—from Athenian Ruins to the Chrysler building The geometric foundations, forms, and patterns in today’s architecture, design and, decorative arts can trace their origins in past cultures. From humankind’s first path-like doodles on cave walls through to the higher abstractions developed to make accurate measurements and predictions, the three-dimensional forms we design and build have always been dependent on available materials, human needs, and the limits of our imaginations. 3D Thinking in Design and Architecture tells the story of the intimate relationship between geometry, mathematics and man-made design throughout human history, from the Neolithic period through the Indian, Egyptian, Babylonian, Chinese, Greek, Celtic, Islamic and Renaissance cultures, to the present and the possible future. Presenting key principles that can be applied across all design disciplines, design expert Roger Burrows relates how geometry as a visual language has evolved to meet our needs, initiated new technologies, and changed the way we think about the world around us. With a wealth of original artwork by the author to explain his ideas, this book will be an essential reference and source of inspiration for students and design professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's explosive urban growth continues to make headlines, illustrated by dramatic shots of the latest commercial or residential buildings, each more outstanding (and often more outlandish) than the next. As the country's new money matures, it is increasingly being redirected from the necessity of industry to the nicety of culture. While the recession has put a damper on plans for new cultural venues in many world cities, museums in China are booming. Once scarce, they have multiplied rapidly, with more than one thousand opening during the last decade. They are now found throughout the country in megacities, smaller urban centers, and even in more remote places like Ordos, Inner Mongolia (in the middle of the Gobi Desert). New Museums in China presents fifty-one of the most innovative museums of the last ten years in beautiful photographs, detailed drawings, and insightful texts based on interviews with an international slate of architects. This spectacular collection makes an excellent survey and sourcebook for architects, art and design enthusiasts, and Sinophiles alike.
