Book excerpt: BLOOD, BULLETS AND BOOZE GHOSTS AND GANGSTERS OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS When we think of the Roaring 20's - that decade of gangsters, jazz, Prohibition, and flappers - most of us think of Chicago, Al Capone, and the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The Windy City has become famous for its one-way-rides and violent shootouts, but author Troy Taylor presents another part of Prohibition-era Illinois that not only outgunned and outdrank Chicago but has just as many ghost stories left lingering behind from those turbulent days. Southern Illinois - or "Little Egypt" as some call it - not only had just as many gangsters and just as much booze and bloodshed, but it also had aerial bombings, homemade military tanks, dirty cops, unsolved murders, attacks on hospitals, and gun battles with the Ku Klux Klan! Take a trip back in time to the days of the explosive Southern Illinois gang wars, when Charlie Birger, the Shelton Brothers, the Ku Klux Klan, and a bunch of wild card gunmen wreaked havoc, created mayhem, and carried out countless murders as they fought for control of the liquor trade. And it was all happening at the same time Al Capone was the biggest mob boss in that city by Lake Michigan. Maybe the gangs of Southern Illinois didn't wear fancy suits or drink their bootleg liquor in fancy glasses on Lake Shore Drive, but they were just as deadly as their counterparts - maybe even more so! Delve into the gangsters and ghosts of the Roaring 20's in a way you never have before with this page-turner of a book!

Between my guilt of imposing financial ruin on my ex (which was totally justified!) and my desire to be able to take care of my children, I have now joined forces with a private investigator. The upside: It pays a hell of a lot. Plus it’s night shift! The downside: I now see the ugly side of our small town of Charming, Mississippi. We all wear masks and we all have secrets. And now I’m about to discover my Maker Khalan’s biggest one. It’s enough to make a vampire cry. That is, if I had time for the nervous breakdown I so rightly deserve. In the meantime I will rise to the occasion, drink my blood and be the best damn vampire/ soccer mom/ photographer I can be. I am Rachel Jones. And I’m the vampire housewife.

Book excerpt: Stories of those lost in the gritty and crime-laden asphalt jungle are together in this collection from the acclaimed noir, presented at original size with new wrap-around cover art by Frank Miller. There are all kinds of dark business you might encounter on a cold night in Basin City, and the tales here paint a gloriously dirty portrait. Marv, the hulking ex-con with a condition, has to jog his memory about a certain Saturday night, and then on another evening, he’s after something but he keeps his quest is quiet—sometimes there’s no need for words. Visiting Old Town, where all your dreams could come true, Gail and Miho demonstrate what happens when you don’t play by their rules. Then, hired-hand Blue Eyes makes an important kill—a few, actually. A woman on the run finds a way out . . . A sucker with good intentions gets duped . . . Fat Man and Little Boy are seen on a couple of jobs, and being low-rent hit-men, you can guess what that means. And the dark deeds and dealings stay dark in a few more stories also included in this anthology. The fourth editions of Frank Miller’s hit graphic novel series continue with Volume 6 Booze, Broads, & Bullets. This edition includes a fourteen-page expanded cover and art gallery featuring pieces from previous editions. As an anthology of short tales, it’s a great jumping on point for new readers wondering what Sin City is all about—or longtime readers who can't get enough! FOR MATURE READERS

Book excerpt: “Kick off your shoes, pour yourself a stiff drink and take your hat off to the elder statesman of southern African words--he’s done it again.” --Alexandra Fuller “Vivid and powerful. Highly recommended.” --Library Journal (starred review) The author of Serenity House and Kruger’s Alp (winner of the Whitbread Prize for Fiction) returns with a lyrical and taut novel about the past fifty years of white presence in South Africa, told through a son’s larger-than-life vision of his mother. In Kathleen Healey, acclaimed novelist Christopher Hope crafts a superbly authentic female character. Aviator, big game hunter, and a knitting devotee who once boxed three rounds with Ernest Hemingway, her multitude of lovers came from all over the world. When she fades with illness, her son must carry out her final wishes, and confront his own ability to love. Bitingly funny and inventive, My Mother’s Lovers is as fierce and radiant as our romance with Africa.

Book excerpt: Mary Steinhauser is the only peace officer in the history of penal institutions in Canada to willingly offer up her life in the service of her country. It was during a 1975 prison escape attempt and 41-hour hostage-taking by three desperate inmates of the British Columbia Penitentiary in New Westminster, B.C. that Mary volunteered to be the principal hostage. For 41 hours, she was held as a human shield, protecting not only the inmates but the fourteen other hostages sequestered in a nearby vault. Her calmness, composure and bravery throughout the entire hostage-taking was noted by the negotiators and penitentiary staff alike. She was killed there. This is her story. This biography of Mary's life and tragic death is narrated by Margaret, her younger sister. From Mary’s early childhood in rural B.C., it charts the evolution of a young nurse from social worker to symbol for those dedicated to prison reform. Mary's experiences are fascinating reading for any adult interested in local history, law enforcement, mental health awareness, and criminal justice. Her work as a psychiatric nurse in hospitals and institutions across Canada led to her introduction to prison life, which sparked her fierce determination to improve the inmate experience, prisoner justice, and prison reform. Sprinkled throughout with personal anecdotes and quotes from important people in Mary's life, Between Blade and Bullet is a compelling, deeply emotional, and thought-provoking look into the life and death of one heroic woman. Searchingly honest, it examines how Canadian institutions closed down to protect themselves, and the consequences of justice for those left on the outside.

When Malone gets promoted to be the new leader of the Gang Task Force, he sees it as a real opportunity to do some good. But before he can even get started, a fatal accident turns his life upside down. Hellbent on justice, he incites a war with the Latin Kings, one of the deadliest gangs in the world. Malone's vendetta sends him into the grisly depths of the city's underworld, but the threat quickly turns out to be closer to home. Suddenly, Malone is no longer fighting to make a difference: he's now on his heels, fighting for his own life and the lives of the people he loves. He knows there's only one way out: through blood-filled justice - or in a body bag. Bite The Bullet is a journey into the crime-ridden streets of Chicago that you'll never forget.

Aiden Gabor was still a teenager when Department of Justice agents approached him with an ultimatum: spend his life in prison for racketeering, embezzlement, extortion, and conspiracy to commit murder, or become an undercover agent. Conflicting Loyalties is a sharp, honest memoir in three parts: the bloody life of a mob soldier from outside la famiglia; the death-defying, paranoid existence of an informant bringing down corrupt politicians and police departments from the inside; and unexpectedly finding peace late in life through the Baha’i faith while coping with an ALS diagnosis. Conflicting Loyalties is a visceral tale of a man who gambles with his own life in order to save it, dodging his fate while searching for an identity, a father, and a family. It is for readers of Gianni Russo’s Hollywood Godfather, Joe Pistone’s classic Donnie Brasco, and anyone interested in mob life, police and political corruption, and finding peace after a life of violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Carr was an addict for more than twenty years -- first dope, then coke, then finally crack -- before the prospect of losing his newborn twins made him sober up in a bid to win custody from their crack-dealer mother. Once recovered, he found that his recollection of his 'lost' years differed -- sometimes radically -- from that of his family and friends. The night, for example, his best friend pulled a gun on him. 'No,' said the friend (to David's horror, as a lifelong pacifist), 'It was you that had the gun.' Using all his skills as an investigative reporter, he set out to research his own life, interviewing everyone from his parents and his ex-partners to the policemen who arrested him, the doctors who treated him and the lawyers who fought to prove he was fit to have custody of his kids. Unflinchingly honest and beautifully written, the result is both a shocking account of the depths of addiction and a fascinating examination of how -- and why -- our memories deceive us. As David says, we remember the stories we can live with, not the ones that happened.

Book excerpt: “[A] fantastically hopped-up thriller . . . a wrong-man plot worthy of Hitchcock.”—Entertainment Weekly (Editor’s Choice) It’s three thousand miles from the green fields of glory, where Henry “call me Hank” Thompson once played California baseball, to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where the tenements are old, the rents are high, and the drunks are dirty. But now Hank is here, working as a bartender and taking care of a cat named Bud who is surely going to get him killed. It begins when Hank’s neighbor, Russ, has to leave town in a rush and hands over Bud in a carrier. But it isn’t until two Russians in tracksuits drag Hank over the bar at the joint where he works and beat him to a pulp that he starts to get the idea: Someone wants something from him. He just doesn’t know what it is, where it is, or how to make them understand he doesn’t have it. Within twenty-four hours Hank is running over rooftops, swinging his old aluminum bat for the sweet spot of a guy’s head, playing hide and seek with the NYPD, riding the subway with a dead man at his side, and counting a whole lot of cash on a concrete floor. All because of two cowboys, two Russian mafia men, and some of the weirdest goons ever assembled in one place. All because of Bud. All because once, in another life, in another world, the only thing Hank wanted was to take third base—without getting caught.

Book excerpt: Jimmy Lee Snow, A.K.A. Bobby Williams, is not just your average bank robber and jewelry thief; he is also a highly skilled and somewhat lucky escape artist. As he narrowly frees himself from a maximum-security institution, for a second time, he meets some interesting characters along the way that advertently or inadvertently aid in his freedom. Once on the run, he certainly breaks the law to acquire cash, a car and a new identity. Because he's oddly likable and not really violent, you seem to root for this lawbreaker, despite the fact you know he deserves to be caught and put back into the system. As you read further, you know Jimmy Lee isn't your typical criminal. One of the many characters he encounters along the way is a hooker. Yet the only thing he wants from her is a new identity. This would normally be quite odd coming from a guy who just left prison after ten years! He then picks up two runaways and convinces them to go back home, where he even funds the bus ride. This begins to show Jimmy Lee's odd sense of integrity. (By the way, we soon find out why he was "saving himself.") Part two begins with his true passion; Veronica Lin Brooks, a teacher and soon-to-be partner on the run. the back story is interesting and seemingly unbelievable at times, but the reader can certainly see her attraction to this likable escapee. As the adventure unfolds you find yourself wanting to lecture her and root for them, all at the same time. As the FBI and detectives search for them, you can feel all their desperation and exhaustion. It finally concludes with an unexpected ending, but stranger things have happened.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its rough-and-tumble image, Chicago has long been identified as a city where books take center stage. In fact, a volume by A. J. Liebling gave the Second City its nickname. Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle arose from the midwestern capital’s most infamous industry. The great Chicago Fire led to the founding of the Chicago Public Library. The city has fostered writers such as Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, and Gwendolyn Brooks. Chicago’s literary magazines The Little Review and Poetry introduced the world to Eliot, Hemingway, Joyce, and Pound. The city’s robust commercial printing industry supported a flourishing culture of the book. With this beautifully produced collection, Chicago’s rich literary tradition finally gets its due. Chicago by the Book profiles 101 landmark publications about Chicago from the past 170 years that have helped define the city and its image. Each title—carefully selected by the Caxton Club, a venerable Chicago bibliophilic organization—is the focus of an illustrated essay by a leading scholar, writer, or bibliophile. Arranged chronologically to show the history of both the city and its books, the essays can be read in order from Mrs. John H. Kinzie’s 1844 Narrative of the Massacre of Chicago to Sara Paretsky’s 2015 crime novel Brush Back. Or one can dip in and out, savoring reflections on the arts, sports, crime, race relations, urban planning, politics, and even Mrs. O’Leary’s legendary cow. The selections do not shy from the underside of the city, recognizing that its grit and graft have as much a place in the written imagination as soaring odes and boosterism. As Neil Harris observes in his introduction, “Even when Chicagoans celebrate their hearth and home, they do so while acknowledging deep-seated flaws.” At the same time, this collection heartily reminds us all of what makes Chicago, as Norman Mailer called it, the “great American city.” With essays from, among others, Ira Berkow, Thomas Dyja, Ann Durkin Keating, Alex Kotlowitz, Toni Preckwinkle, Frank Rich, Don Share, Carl Smith, Regina Taylor, Garry Wills, and William Julius Wilson; and featuring works by Saul Bellow, Gwendolyn Brooks, Sandra Cisneros, Clarence Darrow, Erik Larson, David Mamet, Studs Terkel, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Frank Lloyd Wright, and many more.
