Book Synopsis Sex, France, and Arab Men, 1962–1979 by : Todd Shepard
Download or read book Sex, France, and Arab Men, 1962–1979 written by Todd Shepard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aftermath of Algeria’s revolutionary war for independence coincided with the sexual revolution in France, and in this book Todd Shepard argues that these two movements are inextricably linked. Sex, France, and Arab Men is a history of how and why—from the upheavals of French Algeria in 1962 through the 1970s—highly sexualized claims about Arabs were omnipresent in important public French discussions, both those that dealt with sex and those that spoke of Arabs. Shepard explores how the so-called sexual revolution took shape in a France profoundly influenced by the ongoing effects of the Algerian revolution. Shepard’s analysis of both events alongside one another provides a frame that renders visible the ways that the fight for sexual liberation, usually explained as an American and European invention, developed out of the worldwide anticolonial movement of the mid-twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Moralizing the Market by : Yves-Marie Péréon
Download or read book Moralizing the Market written by Yves-Marie Péréon and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the late 1960s, France attempted a complete overhaul of its financial regulations without being forced to do so by a stock market crash or the collapse of its banking system. Out of pure political expediency, Gaullist reformers seized the opportunity offered by a minor insider trading case to establish the "Commission des Opérations de Bourse (COB), an independent commission in charge of regulating the securities market. Even more surprisingly, these staunch defenders of national sovereignty drew their inspiration from an American model, the Securities and Exchange Commission. Rather than a comparative study of securities regulation in France and the United States, the book is an investigation of the dynamics of policy transfer in the field of securities regulation. Along the way, it reveals a great deal about French and American perceptions of morality and capitalism, but also, more generally, about the exercise of political power in modern democracies, the interaction between business and government, and the mechanisms of institutional innovation"--

Download or read book Malraux written by Olivier Todd and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writer, publisher, war hero, French government minister, André Malraux was renowned as a Renaissance man of the twentieth century. Now, Olivier Todd–author of the acclaimed biography Albert Camus–gives us this life, in which fact competes dramatically with his subject’s previously little-known mythomania. We see the adventurous young Malraux move from 1920s literary Paris to colonial Cambodia, Cochin China, and Spain in its civil war. Todd charts the thrilling exploits that would inspire such novels as Man’s Fate, but, just as fascinating, he also traces Malraux’s lifelong pattern of lies: claiming friendship with Mao, he was called to tutor Nixon, despite having met the Great Helmsman only once; a minor injury becomes in recollections a near-mortal battlefield wound; stories of heroism in the French Resistance omit to mention that Malraux joined up just a few weeks before the Allied landings. With meticulous research, Todd separates myth from reality to throw light on a brilliant con man who would become a national hero, but he also lets us see Malraux’s genuine achievements as both writer and man of action. His real life and the one he embroidered come together in this superb biography to reveal how Malraux, the protean genius, became his own greatest character.
Book Synopsis François Mauriac Revisited by : David O'Connell
Download or read book François Mauriac Revisited written by David O'Connell and published by Twayne Publishers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new entry in Twayne's World Authors Series, David O'Connell provides an exceptionally well written, jargon-free introduction to Mauriac, a thoroughly updated rendition of Maxwell Smith's well received Francois Mauriac (1970). Drawing on a trove of primary source material that has become available in the interim, O'Connell focuses on the people and events influencing Mauriac's personal life and how these were manifested in his writings. Organizing his material partly chronologically and partly by genre, O'Connell surveys the writer's major accomplishments and occasional failings; he sheds much needed light on such developments as the spiritual crisis Mauriac underwent in 1927-30 and the writer's shift from supporter of right-wing causes to leading spokesman for the Resistance during World War II. Observing that Mauriac's "influence at home and abroad was enormous during his lifetime" and that "since his death, no 'Catholic writer' of comparable stature has emerged to replace him", O'Connell underscores Mauriac's enduring place in world literature. Readers seeking a first-rate guide to this cardinal writer need look no further than Francois Mauriac Revisited.
