Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Blake once wrote that "The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom." Inspired by these poetic terms, Jeffrey J. Kripal reveals how the works of scholars of mysticism are often rooted in their own mystical experiences, "roads of excess," which can both lead to important insights into these scholars' works and point us to our own "palaces of wisdom." In his new book, Kripal addresses the twentieth-century study of mysticism as a kind of mystical tradition in its own right, with its own unique histories, discourses, sociological dynamics, and rhetorics of secrecy. Fluidly combining autobiography and biography with scholarly exploration, Kripal takes us on a tour of comparative mystical thought by examining the lives and works of five major historians of mysticism—Evelyn Underhill, Louis Massignon, R. C. Zaehner, Agehananda Bharati, and Elliot Wolfson—as well as relating his own mystical experiences. The result, Kripal finds, is seven "palaces of wisdom": the religious power of excess, the necessity of distance in the study of mysticism, the relationship between the mystical and art, the dilemmas of male subjectivity and modern heterosexuality, a call for ethical criticism, the paradox of the insider-outsider problem in the study of religion, and the magical power of texts and their interpretation. An original and penetrating analysis of modern scholarship and scholars of mysticism, Roads of Excess, Palaces of Wisdom is also a persuasive demonstration of the way this scholarly activity is itself a mystical phenomenon.

He explores this intellectual revival by studying that period’s "talas", the Catholic students at the elite Ecole Normale Supérieure, and devotes his attention to some of the highest-profile coverts, such as Charles Péguy and Jacques Maritain. This title will be of interest to students of nineteenth- and twentieth-century religious and social history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new entry in Twayne's World Authors Series, David O'Connell provides an exceptionally well written, jargon-free introduction to Mauriac, a thoroughly updated rendition of Maxwell Smith's well received Francois Mauriac (1970). Drawing on a trove of primary source material that has become available in the interim, O'Connell focuses on the people and events influencing Mauriac's personal life and how these were manifested in his writings. Organizing his material partly chronologically and partly by genre, O'Connell surveys the writer's major accomplishments and occasional failings; he sheds much needed light on such developments as the spiritual crisis Mauriac underwent in 1927-30 and the writer's shift from supporter of right-wing causes to leading spokesman for the Resistance during World War II. Observing that Mauriac's "influence at home and abroad was enormous during his lifetime" and that "since his death, no 'Catholic writer' of comparable stature has emerged to replace him", O'Connell underscores Mauriac's enduring place in world literature. Readers seeking a first-rate guide to this cardinal writer need look no further than Francois Mauriac Revisited.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Duff Cooper Prize Winner of the Elizabeth Longford Prize A New Yorker, Financial Times, Spectator, Times, and Telegraph Book of the Year In this definitive biography of the mythic general who refused to accept the Nazi domination of France, Julian Jackson captures Charles de Gaulle as never before. Drawing on unpublished letters, memoirs, and papers from the recently opened de Gaulle archive, he shows how this volatile visionary of staunch faith and conservative beliefs infuriated Churchill, challenged American hegemony, recognized the limitations of colonial ambitions in Algeria and Vietnam, and put a broken France back at the center of world affairs. “With a fluent style and near-total command of existing and newly available sources...Julian Jackson has come closer than anyone before him to demystifying this conservative at war with the status quo, for whom national interests were inseparable from personal honor.” —Richard Norton Smith, Wall Street Journal “A sweeping-yet-concise introduction to the most brilliant, infuriating, and ineffably French of men.” —Ross Douthat, New York Times “Classically composed and authoritative...Jackson writes wonderful political history.” —Adam Gopnik, New Yorker “A remarkable book in which the man widely chosen as the Greatest Frenchman is dissected, intelligently and lucidly, then put together again in an extraordinary fair-minded, highly readable portrait. Throughout, the book tells a thrilling story.” —Antonia Fraser, New Statesman “Makes awesome reading, and is a tribute to the fascination of its subject, and to Jackson’s mastery of it...A triumph, and hugely readable.” —Max Hastings, Sunday Times
