Book excerpt: `We Can Take It!' shows that the British remember the war in a peculiar way, thanks to a mix of particular images and evidence. Our memory has been shaped by material which is completely removed from historical reality. These images (including complete inventions) have combined to make a new history. The vision is mostly cosy and suits the way in which the Britons conceive of themselves: dogged, good humoured, occasionally bumbling, unified and enjoying diversity. In fact Britons load their memory towards the early part of the war (Dunkirk, Blitz, Battle of Britain) rather than when we were successful in the air or against Italy and Germany with invasions. This suits our love of being the underdog, fighting against the odds, and being in a crisis. Conversely, the periods of the war during which Britain was in the ascendant are, perversely, far more hazy in the public memory.

Book excerpt: In 1973, on a remote beach in Australia, a group of surfers gather for another day of adventure, friendship, and adrenaline. Bear, LP, Mason, Brownie, and George and their friends, a testosterone-amped community of surfers and bikers, live on the dangerous side of the law, both by choice and by necessity. But what happens that day has nothing to do with surfing. A chance discovery is about to change their livesand end a few of them. At a bora ring, an ancient Aboriginal ceremonial site in outback Queensland, an artefact waits to be found. Perhaps the Scroll even waits for them to find it. But in the discovery, each man faces his own curiosity. Has the Dreamtime seeped into the world? Can they trust Tibrogargan, Brownies ancient Dreamtime ancestor? What messages are the women trying to share, and are the women even real? That night, the men find more questions than answers. Their quest for understanding takes them on a four-decade journey of exploration around the world. Mysticism, spiritualism, drugs, sex, and violence are but distractions in their quest to save the Scroll. In the year 2010, the Scroll will give up one of its many secretsand when one of the men realizes that his participation in this quest was foretold by Nostradamus himself, they will all learn that their adventure is far from over.

Book excerpt: ""The Motorway Police System in Pakistan is designed in a manner which enables law enforcement and does not encourage corruption. Enforcement action is transparent because of the tools made available and the manner in which SOPs have been prepared. It operates a traffic law which is as good as any in the world. The officers work in eight hour shifts and get weekly holidays by rotation. They live and work on the highway and are well compensated to be able to run two kitchens. In view of this, the Motorway Police has become a model for policing in Pakistan. Asad Jahangir Khan Ex-IG NH&MP."" Thus it is thought provoking: it is revolutionary, opening new vistas and bold horizons of intellectual endeavors. This book is scholarly written and exquisitely presented.

Book excerpt: At the center of this study lies the allocation of responsibilities and the division of labor between the armed forces and the mission of the police as well as other security forces in Europe. The mission of these forces defines the demarcation line between the spheres of internal and external security by assigning the former to the police and the latter to the armed forces. The focal idea is the evaluation of the feasibility of a strict separation as maintained in Germany in a European context, practical difficulties in its application, and potential ways to overcome such difficulties. This comprises in particular a comparison of the "German Way" with other European states and the corresponding methods chosen against the background of joint operations abroad.

Book excerpt: Political protest and social movementstheir history; their cyclical development; their organization, strategies, and tacticsconstitute what Charles Euchner calls extraordinary politics, an antidote to the breakdown of politics-as-usual and a necessary, if not sufficient, condition of democracy. Activists have set the pace on every conceivable issue, including the environment, gay rights, feminism, abortion, states rights, religion, and multiculturalism. The president and Congress can barely keep up, but extraordinary politics keeps evolving. With style and grace, the author weaves together hundreds of examples drawn from movements spanning the ideological spectrum to offer both a practical and intellectual guidebook to political activism in a reputedly apathetic age, embracing with abandon the art of making a difference. }When dissidents and activists toppled powerful regimes across the globe in the 1980s and 1990sfrom the Soviet Union to South Africa, from Nicaragua to the Philippineshow did Americans respond to challenges in their own country? The conventional wisdom is that Americans sullenly withdrew from all manner of political action. But in fact, activists of all backgrounds took to the streets to challenge ordinary structures of politics. These movementstheir history; their cyclical development; their organization, strategies, and tacticsconstitute what the author calls extraordinary politics. Activists have set the pace on every conceivable issue, including the environment, gay rights, feminism, abortion, states rights, religion, and multiculturalism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of employment is changing: low wage jobs are increasingly common, fewer workers belong to unions, and workplaces are being transformed through the growth of contracting-out, franchising, and extended supply chains. Closing the Enforcement Gap offers a comprehensive analysis of the enforcement of employment standards in Ontario. Adopting mixed methods, this work includes qualitative research involving in-depth interviews with workers, community advocates, and enforcement officials; extensive archival research excavating decades of ministerial records; and analysis of a previously untapped source of administrative data collected by Ontario’s Ministry of Labour. The authors reveal and trace the roots of a deepening "enforcement gap" that pervades nearly all aspects of the regime, demonstrating that the province’s Employment Standards Act (ESA) fails too many workers who rely on the floor of minimum conditions it was devised to provide. Arguably, there is nothing inevitable about the enforcement gap in Ontario or for that matter elsewhere. Through contributions from leading employment standards enforcement scholars in the US, the UK, and Australia, as well as Quebec, Closing the Enforcement Gap surveys innovative enforcement models that are emerging in a variety of jurisdictions and sets out a bold vision for strengthening employment standards enforcement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spa in nineteenth century European society was a place of intersections: of social class and of ideas, of social and of scientific concepts. As the social showcase for “polite” society, it embodied many of the desires and dreams of the increasingly fashionable middle-class world. As a place prominent in the medical world of its day, the heath spa contributed to the ongoing dialogue of the emergent science of medicine, where both mainstream and voices of medical dissent were to be heard. Thus, in the enclosed and limited space of a thermal health spa lie encapsulated significant historical trends and social dialogues. Over the course of the long nineteenth century, the doctor-patient relationship shifted from one in which the patient was the primary decision maker to one dominated by the “order-giving” professional physician over the “compliant” patient. This process could not have occurred without a significant change in the attitude of the patients themselves. The spa, a place containing diverse and competing strands of medical thought and a wide range of middle-class patients, offers a unique research opportunity for a focused social history of German medicine that reaches beyond the world of the spa; or indeed, of medicine into the darker chapters of the twentieth century and the turn from liberalism toward authoritarianism.
