Book excerpt: Following the untimely death of his parents when he is ten years old, Kenneth Mills is forced to live with his grandmother, Esther, in Osprey Cove, Maine. Esther is controlling and bitter, and she and Kenneth repulse each other. What's more, Kenneth is unbalanced; as a teenager, he attacks a fellow student with a scalpel and then spends three years in the Crestwood Insane Asylum, where he is eventually diagnosed as a psychotic schizophrenic. Following treatment, he returns to the home of his youth. As he grows to adulthood, the townspeople see him differently. They are now scared of Kenneth and fear what he might do to them. He has bizarre obsessions with younger girls and fantasizes about becoming a great surgeon, like Dr. Walters, the town's only physician. Despite Kenneth's delusions, however, his psychological state may have other causes. The people of Osprey Cove are, in fact, cruel and abnormal-but who's to say what's normal anyway? As he sinks further and further into fantasy, it is impossible for Kenneth to discern reality from dreams. In the end, the question remains: who is the real lunatic of Osprey Cove?

Book Synopsis You Can't Go Home Again by : Thomas Wolfe
Download or read book You Can't Go Home Again written by Thomas Wolfe and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available from Thomas Wolfe’s original publisher, the final novel by the literary legend, that “will stand apart from everything else that he wrote” (The New York Times Book Review)—first published in 1940 and long considered a classic of twentieth century literature. A twentieth-century classic, Thomas Wolfe’s magnificent novel is both the story of a young writer longing to make his mark upon the world and a sweeping portrait of America and Europe from the Great Depression through the years leading up to World War II. Driven by dreams of literary success, George Webber has left his provincial hometown to make his name as a writer in New York City. When his first novel is published, it brings him the fame he has sought, but it also brings the censure of his neighbors back home, who are outraged by his depiction of them. Unsettled by their reaction and unsure of himself and his future, Webber begins a search for a greater understanding of his artistic identity that takes him deep into New York’s hectic social whirl; to London with an uninhibited group of expatriates; and to Berlin, lying cold and sinister under Hitler’s shadow. He discovers a world plagued by political uncertainty and on the brink of transformation, yet he finds within himself the capacity to meet it with optimism and a renewed love for his birthplace. He is a changed man yet a hopeful one, awake to the knowledge that one can never fully “go back home to your family, back home to your childhood…away from all the strife and conflict of the world…back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time.”

Book Synopsis Management of Extended Parotid Tumors by : Victor-Vlad Costan
Download or read book Management of Extended Parotid Tumors written by Victor-Vlad Costan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively illustrated book aims to systematize the selection of treatment options in patients with parotid tumors that extend beyond the borders of the parotid tissue and therefore present particular problems for the surgeon. Reconstruction of the postoperative defect is especially difficult in such cases because of the complexity and density of the anatomical structures in the lateral region of the head and neck and also the general condition of most patients, who tend to be elderly and to have accompanying disorders. The difficulty in the management of extended parotid tumors is increased by the need to sacrifice the facial nerve, even if only partially. The book provides clear criteria to assist in the choice of treatment, from the simplest options involving use of local flaps to the most sophisticated ones. It will assist the surgeon in ensuring that the patient achieves the best possible quality of life, no matter what the patient’s age or the associated comorbidities.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Order by : Nicole Falkenhayner
Download or read book Rethinking Order written by Nicole Falkenhayner and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability is at the core of every discussion of order, organization or institutionalization. From an »inside« perspective, the stability of each order-constituting element is assumed. In contrast, in critical discourses instability (e.g. through ambiguity or non-control) is located at the outside of the social order as its negative. By treating this argumentative symmetrical structure as »idioms of stability and destabilization«, the articles try to rethink order: How can we describe structures from a perspective in which instability, non-control and irrationality are not contrary to ordering systems, but contribute to their stability? How might the notions of identity, knowledge and institutions in social and cultural studies be contested by this change of perspective?
