Book excerpt: Sisters Lark and Clef have spent their lives honing their bodies for sleight, an interdisciplinary art form that combines elements of dance, architecture, acrobatics, and spoken word. After being estranged for several years, the sisters are reunited by a deceptive and ambitious sleight troupe director named West who needs the sisters' opposing approaches to the form--Lark is tormented and fragile, but a prodigy; Clef is driven to excel, but lacks the spark of artistic genius. When a disturbing mass murder makes national headlines, West seizes on the event as inspiration for his new performance, one that threatens to destroy the very artists performing it. In language that is at once unsettling and hypnotic, Sleight explores ideas of performance, gender, and family to ask the question: what is the role of art in the face of unthinkable tragedy? Kirsten Kaschock has earned degrees from Yale University, the University of Iowa, Syracuse University, and the University of Georgia. The author of two collections of poetry, Unfathoms and A Beautiful Name for a Girl, she resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she is currently a doctoral fellow in dance at Temple University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written about Appalachia, but few have voiced its concerns with the warmth and directness of this one. From hundreds of interviews gathered by the Appalachian Oral History Project, editors Laurel Shackelford and Bill Weinberg have woven a rich verbal tapestry that portrays the people and the region in all their variety. The words on the page have the ring of truth, for these are the people of Appalachia speaking for themselves. Here they recollect an earlier time of isolation but of independence and neighborliness. For a nearer time they tell of the great changes that took place in Appalachia with the growth of coal mining and railroads and the disruption of old ways. Persisting through the years and sounding clearly in the interviews are the dignity of the Appalachian people and their close ties with the land, despite the exploitation and change they have endured. When first published, Our Appalachia was widely praised. This new edition again makes available an authentic source of social history for all those with an interest in the region.

Book excerpt: McTeague is an enormously strong but dim-witted former miner now working as a dentist in San Francisco towards the end of the nineteenth century. He falls in love with Trina, one of his patients, and shortly after their engagement she wins a large sum in a lottery. All is well until McTeague is betrayed and they fall into a life of increasing poverty and degradation. This novel is often presented as an example of American naturalism where the behavior and experience of characters are constrained by “nature”—both their own heredity nature, and the broader social environment. McTeague was published in 1899 as the first of Norris’s major novels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book closes the gap for beginners who want to study the Amharic language and had difficulties in finding the right grammar for this purpose: The first grammar of Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia, was published by Hiob Ludolf in 1698. The Amharic grammar published by Praetorius in 1879 is based on Amharic religious texts and on scattered material, usually composed by missionaries. A milestone in the study of Amharic is Marcel Cohen's Traite de langue amharique (1936), but this grammar, too is not completely suited for beginners since the author's generalizations are at times aimed at linguists. The grammar that comes closest to the concept of a beginner's grammar is that of C.H. Dawkin (1960), yet this grammar is extremely short, does not give examples and does not introduce the student to the intricacies of the language. The new book gives all the grammatical forms and the sentences of the present grammar in Amharic script and in phonetic transcription. The illustrative examples have a free and a literal translation. This procedure should likewise prove to be useful for the Semitist as well as for the general linguist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories in this book underscore three underlying patterns in California prisons (the Department). For decades prisoners have been deprived of the rehabilitative programs that could help them transform their lives. The institutions that were referred to in this book reveal rampant and consistent pathology, causing harm to the prisoners, and spreading the threat to society by failing to rehabilitate its wards. This book clearly exhibits that prisons are not "cushy" motels, but are dangerous, mismanaged and criminogenic venues that are not only extremely uncomfortable, but inhumane. The idleness, racism, and other maladaptive behavior that seem part and parcel of the culture of California prisons is winked at by guards and implicitly encouraged by the Department. This malfeasance coupled with the lack of rehabilitative programs offers some understanding and reason for prisoner rebellion and violence. Given the nearly two decades of contrasting success that the Honor Yard/Progressive Programming facility has enjoyed, one could conclude with near certainty that prisoners can commit to personal change if offered consistent programs to help them do so. Indeed, it was the prisoners of the PPF who initiated and designed the program. Since 2000, the Honor Yard/PPF has never suffered a racial riot, has maintained a consistently lower rate of violence, and prides itself on a culture of camaraderie and collective rehabilitation. The PPF demonstrates that prisoners want rehabilitative programs and will sincerely utilize them if only given the opportunity.
