Book excerpt: "The five years between the Browns' upset of the Baltimore Colts on December 27, 1964, for the team's last NFL Championship and the very first Monday Night Football game on September 21, 1970, when the Browns beat Joe Namath and the New York Jets, have been neglected by sports writers. The 1965-69 Browns qualified for the postseason four times, played in three NFL Championship Games and twice came within a game of the Super Bowl. These years were great years for the Browns"--

Download or read book The Cleveland Browns All-Time All-Stars written by Roger Gordon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let’s say you’re the coach of the Cleveland Browns, deciding which players should start in a Super Bowl matchup against the toughest team in the NFC. But instead of choosing from the current roster, you have every player in the team’s 75-year history in your locker room. Who starts at quarterback: Hall-of-Famer Otto Graham, steady Brian Sipe, deadly accurate Bernie Kosar, or dynamic Baker Mayfield? At kicker, do you play Hall of Famer Lou Groza or 14-year-veteran Phil Dawson? Which players get the start at wide receiver? Dante Lavelli, Paul Warfield, Braylon Edwards, Ray Renfro, or Jarvis Landry? Combining career stats, common sense, and a host of intangibles, veteran sportswriter Roger Gordon imagines an embarrassment of riches and sets the all-time All-Star Browns lineup for the ages.

Book Synopsis America's Game by : Michael MacCambridge
Download or read book America's Game written by Michael MacCambridge and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2008-11-26 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s difficult to imagine today—when the Super Bowl has virtually become a national holiday and the National Football League is the country’s dominant sports entity—but pro football was once a ramshackle afterthought on the margins of the American sports landscape. In the span of a single generation in postwar America, the game charted an extraordinary rise in popularity, becoming a smartly managed, keenly marketed sports entertainment colossus whose action is ideally suited to television and whose sensibilities perfectly fit the modern age. America’s Game traces pro football’s grand transformation, from the World War II years, when the NFL was fighting for its very existence, to the turbulent 1980s and 1990s, when labor disputes and off-field scandals shook the game to its core, and up to the sport’s present-day preeminence. A thoroughly entertaining account of the entire universe of professional football, from locker room to boardroom, from playing field to press box, this is an essential book for any fan of America’s favorite sport.
Book Synopsis THE FORGOTTEN DECADE by : Roger Gordon
Download or read book THE FORGOTTEN DECADE written by Roger Gordon and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CONTENDERS? NO. COMPELLING? YES. The Cleveland Browns in the 1970s were, for the most part, an average team. Their 72–70–2 overall record during that period proves that. They qualified for the postseason just twice and had no playoff wins. The low point came in 1974 and 1975 when they posted 4–10 and 3–11 records, respectively. The 1970s Browns, however, still managed to draw the attention of their fans. They still attracted large crowds to their home games. Their rivalries with AFC Central Division cohorts Pittsburgh and Cincinnati were as strong as ever. The ’70s Browns had some intriguing players such as Brian Sipe, Doug Dieken, and Joe “Turkey” Jones. They also had memorable head coaches like Sam Rutigliano and Forrest Gregg. Despite being a so-so team in this timespan, the Browns nonetheless provided many moments that will live forever such as Billy Andrews’s interception return for a touchdown off a Joe Namath pass that clinched the win in the first Monday Night Football game, Mike Phipps’s touchdown pass to Fair Hooker that had Browns fans thinking upset in a Christmas Eve playoff against the undefeated Dolphins, and Thom Darden’s pick-six off a Roger Staubach pass that helped lead to a shocking rout of the Cowboys on Monday Night Football that impressed even Howard Cosell. The Forgotten Decade is a collection of tales from the 1970s that will bring back memories —good and bad—for longtime Browns fans and will give younger fans a glimpse into what the 1970s Browns were all about.
