This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Records of the Life of Stevenson Arthur Blackwood, K. C. B: Compiled by a Friend and Edited by His Widow It only seeks to give some Records of Sir Arthur Blackwood's life from his own Letters and Notes, from what his Friends said of him, and from the impressions received by those who had to do with him, whether in official, or religious, or social life. Except in the case of those who are gone, none who formed the inner circle of home life have been brought into the story; and so far as was possible, this principle has been studiously maintained. Letters, of which many must exist, have not, except in a few instances, been attainable. Under these limitations, much which could not thus be gathered up, has of necessity been left untold. It is hoped that those to whom Sir Arthur's memory is clear will feel that in these pages they again hold converse with him; and that many others, to whom he was a stranger, may recognise in this volume - with all its imperfections - the true picture of a life nobly lived for the service of god, and for the good of his fellow men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of Blackwood's Magazine To understand what Blackwood's magazine did for the Magazine literature of Scotland, it is necessary to glance at the Magazines of 18th Century Scotland. Scotland had been fairly well supplied with periodicals of every de scription in the leth Century. The Edinburgh Courant, founded in 1705, continued until 1886; The Caledonian Mercury 1720; The Mercury 1674-1757. These magazines were of little importance and the first really noteworthy periodical was the Scots' Magazine established in 1739, and taken over by Constable in 1800. This magazine was a monthly publication and its contents consisted chiefly of book reviews. It continued until Constable's failure in 1826. The weekly Magazine or edinburgh.amusement (1768-1784) had a very wide circulation, due probably to the varied character of its contents. Neither of the last mentioned magazines held a critical attitude toward litera ture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Booker Prize The real-life Guinness heiress offers an inside look at the lives of eccentric aristocrats in this “masterful . . . macabre fairy-tale and blackly humorous family portrait” (Literary Hub). This macabre, mordantly funny, partly auto-biographical novel reveals the gothic craziness behind the scenes in the great houses of the aristocracy, as witnessed through the unsparing eyes of an orphaned teenage girl. Great Granny Webster herself is a fabulous monster, the chilliest of matriarchs, presiding with steely self-regard over a landscape of ruined lives. Great Granny Webster is Caroline Blackwood’s masterpiece. Heiress to the Guinness fortune, Blackwood was celebrated as a great beauty and dazzling raconteur long before she made her name as a strikingly original writer.
