Book excerpt: Regardless of type or student body size, every college or university relies on a chief business officer (CBO) to manage resources and lead most day-to-day operations. Unfortunately, demographic employment reports show that a high percentage of college and university CBOs are White, and a low percentage are Black (College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, CUPA-HR, 2019; National Association of College and University Business Officers, NACUBO, 2016). This qualitative narrative study applied critical race theory, social cognitive career theory: interest development and self-development models, and the social capital theory along with the implicit bias conceptual model to analyze the narrative content about the processes that Black, qualified, and capable men and women experienced, along with the barriers they had to navigate, to become a CBO.The study found that while there were apparent differences in how the participants discovered the CBO profession, the processes, and barriers they experienced in landing their positions were consistent. The findings suggested that aspiring Black men and women must: have a broad social network; be experienced, skilled and educated; submit a thoughtful application; project confidence in your interview; be willing to relocate. The study also showed a lack of a targeted strategy by post-secondary education industry members, such as colleges, universities, and professional associations, to identify and recruit Black men and women. Additionally, search firms play a significant role in job placements, and operational differences between public and private institutions can be a barrier for aspiring Black CBOs.

Book excerpt: Four-time mayor of Washington, D.C., Marion Barry, Jr. tells his shocking and courageous life story, beginning in the cotton fields in Mississippi to the executive offices of one of the most powerful cities in the world. Marion Barry fought relentlessly in his life and his career. A near-life threatening bullet wound to the chest, a survivor of cancer, allegations of drug use, political scandal—he had an incredible story to tell. This provocative, captivating narrative follows the Civil Rights activist, going back to his Mississippi roots, his Memphis upbringing, and his academic school days, up through his college years and move to Washington, D.C., where he became actively involved in Civil Rights, community activism, and bold politics. In the New York Times bestseller, Mayor for Life, Marion Barry Jr. tells all—including the story of his campaigns for mayor of Washington, his ultimate rise to power, his personal struggles and downfalls, and the night of embarrassment, followed by his term in federal prison and ultimately a victorious fourth term as mayor. From the man who, despite the setbacks, boldly served the community of Washington, DC, this is his full story of courage, empowerment, hope, tragedy, triumph, and inspiration.

Book excerpt: DE-MISEDUCATION is the culmination of eight years of research that sought to focus on objectivity while balancing breath and conciseness. Its focus is on black America as a people and as a part of greater America. It begins with the Black Golden Age (just after the start of WWII) and explores the civil rights movement from several optics, the black militancy era, the decline of the black family, cocaine America, crack and incarceration nation with reference made to the CIA and the DEA, the schism between the black male and female, the Tuskegee Airmen, the ladies of NASA and Hidden Figures, the destruction of the black family, the great exodus of blacks out of the ghetto, the plight of fatherless boys and much, much more. The work ends with proposals and prognostications for the future of blacks in America. There is a very strong analysis of the 1960's, especially 1968--America's most volatile year ever. Those having come of age in the 60's will have many a remembrance; those who were socially active in the 60's will have never-to-be-forgotten memories.
