Book excerpt: Combining unfussy, gently rhyming language with vibrant, airy illustrations, Caldecott Medalist Chris Raschka has created a book that will inspire in young readers the wonder of wondering. A little boy wonders about a crow’s life—from the simple “Where do you go in the cold white snow?” to the not-so-simple “Do you ever worry when you hop and you hurry? Are you ever afraid of mistakes you made? Are you never afraid?” All of life is touched on in simple words and spare, elegant artwork. Little Black Crow is not to be missed.

Book excerpt: In 1977, Dorothy Black Crow traded worlds from mainstream America to a foreign country within the United States: the Great Sioux Nation. Though it hardly took any time for her to meet - marry - and move with Selo Black Crow--from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Pine Ridge Res, South Dakota, it took years for her to fit into the vastly different Lakota culture. Out on 800 acres of South Dakota land, Dorothy had to learn, often the hard way:*WE is more important than I.*Tiyoshpaya, the extended family, is most important.*Greed and hoarding is the greatest sin.*Generosity, courage and endurance are the greatest goals.*Reputation is all: Black Crow Honor. *The Land itself is alive, and the Great Mystery watches over all. Faced with living in a log cabin without running water or electricity, Dorothy hauled water, sewed by lamplight, and polished the dirt floor. Under South Dakota skies, she butchered and dried meat, chopped wood, "fixed fence," chased horses, picked chokecherries, plums, buffaloberries, horsemint and sage. She survived blizzards, South Dakota gumbo, and cousins-in-law teasing. Dorothy shares an unforgettable journey into a different American culture that forever altered her point of view and way of life.

Book excerpt: I'VE LOST SO MUCH. FAMILY. MY HOME. PRIDE. MY IDENTITY. And I couldn't help but feel it's entirely my fault. There is no one else to blame. I've quickly learned that being the White Raven isn't easy. The dead are restless and angry, and I don't know the first thing about being a banshee. Those around me will get hurt. To keep them safe, I must endure painful decisions. Zane Hunter, the ultra-bad boy who stole my heart, is one of those difficult decisions. Our souls are synchronized, making us a compatible duo. Too bad I'm engaged to his brother. My forbidden relationship with Zane is complicated. Deep down I want more than what my duty demands of me, what my family's past has shaped for me. Our problematic relationship only increases in tenfold when a surprise I never saw coming shows up in Raven Hallow, changing the game. I thought I had nothing left to lose...I was wrong. Yeah, being a banshee isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

Book excerpt: Explore a story of resilience, self-discovery, and the intricate balance between past and present in Black Crow. Tom Joseph, a young Indigenous airline pilot, skillfully lands a damaged aircraft on a remote frozen mountain lake and wakes up in an intensive care facility facing a frightening new reality. His only memories are of his life as Black Crow, living on the plains before European migration adversely impacted his ancestral lands. Facing profound disorientation and struggling to comprehend the modern world, Tom is visited by spiritual figures from his old life who play a crucial role in helping him come to terms with his surreal situation. They communicate in his native language, narrating the story of his new existence and his mission that has yet to be fulfilled. Supported by friends from both past and present, Tom reluctantly faces challenges and risks to complete the mission given to him in his vision quest two centuries ago. To undertake his quest, Tom now faces dangers as real as the gun-carrying soldiers from his previous life. Realizing he can’t return to the yearned-for past, Tom grapples with the necessity of forging ahead in his current life. Embarking on a quest transcending time and culture, he adjusts to his newfound fame, wrestles with his identity, and strives to fulfill his destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans who moved to California in hopes of finding freedom and full citizenship instead faced all-too-familiar racial segregation. As one transplant put it, "The only difference between Pasadena and Mississippi is the way they are spelled." From the beaches to streetcars to schools, the Golden State—in contrast to its reputation for tolerance—perfected many methods of controlling people of color. Lynn M. Hudson deepens our understanding of the practices that African Americans in the West deployed to dismantle Jim Crow in the quest for civil rights prior to the 1960s. Faced with institutionalized racism, black Californians used both established and improvised tactics to resist and survive the state's color line. Hudson rediscovers forgotten stories like the experimental all-black community of Allensworth, the California Ku Klux Klan's campaign of terror against African Americans, the bitter struggle to integrate public swimming pools in Pasadena and elsewhere, and segregationists' preoccupation with gender and sexuality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919 the NAACP organized a voting bloc powerful enough to compel the city of Atlanta to budget $1.5 million for the construction of schools for black students. This victory would have been remarkable in any era, but in the context of the Jim Crow South it was revolutionary. Schooling Jim Crow tells the story of this little-known campaign, which happened less than thirteen years after the Atlanta race riot of 1906 and just weeks before a wave of anti-black violence swept the nation in the summer after the end of World War I. Despite the constant threat of violence, Atlanta’s black voters were able to force the city to build five black grammar schools and Booker T. Washington High School, the city’s first publicly funded black high school. Schooling Jim Crow reveals how they did it and why it matters. In this pathbreaking book, Jay Driskell explores the changes in black political consciousness that made the NAACP’s grassroots campaign possible at a time when most black southerners could not vote, let alone demand schools. He reveals how black Atlantans transformed a reactionary politics of respectability into a militant force for change. Contributing to this militancy were understandings of class and gender transformed by decades of racially segregated urban development, the 1906 Atlanta race riot, Georgia’s disfranchisement campaign of 1908, and the upheavals of World War I. On this cultural foundation, black Atlantans built a new urban black politics that would become the model for the NAACP’s political strategy well into the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we balance the desire for tales of exceptional accomplishment with the need for painful doses of reality? How hard do we work to remember our past or to forget it? These are some of the questions that Jonathan Scott Holloway addresses in this exploration of race memory from the dawn of the modern civil rights era to the present. Relying on social science, documentary film, dance, popular literature, museums, memoir, and the tourism trade, Holloway explores the stories black Americans have told about their past and why these stories are vital to understanding a modern black identity. In the process, Holloway asks much larger questions about the value of history and facts when memories do violence to both. Making discoveries about his own past while researching this book, Holloway weaves first-person and family memories into the traditional third-person historian's perspective. The result is a highly readable, rich, and deeply personal narrative that will be familiar to some, shocking to others, and thought-provoking to everyone.
