Book excerpt: "In 1979, the US government relocated more than eight hundred families from Love Canal, New York, after decades of toxic contamination. Not all of the residents left: some remained in their homes on the outskirts of the disaster area. Others went underground. Hiding. Changing. Breeding. Almost four decades later, Love Canal has been renamed Black Creek Village and restored for inhabitation. The residents there and on neighboring Cayuga Island remember the tragedy of Love Canal but have no knowledge of the monsters living below the surface. When the worst snowstorm in forty years isolates all of western New York, the forgotten inhabitants of Love Canal emerge from hiding to reclaim what once belonged to them. And they are hungry."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: A credible fictionalized account of early Floridian history, this novel (based, the author explains, on actual historical records of his family members) takes us through Florida's early years as an American territory from the point of view of the white pioneers who poured in from nearby states after Andrew Jackson's unauthorized invasion of the then Spanish colony (the First Seminole War) and Spain's subsequent decision to sell that territory to the United States. For years the Spanish and, briefly, the British (who held Florida for a time and later returned it to Spain) had encouraged Indians from the United States to enter and settle the region as a way of building up a defense against American encroachment and (in the case of the British) of using the Indians against the new republic. Along with the Indians, the colonial authorities in Florida had welcomed and armed escaped black slaves, many of whom found sanctuary as soldiers with the Spanish or as allies of the Indians. (The original Seminole settlements, prior to Jackson's attacks, had been large communal villages with lots of farm land and livestock. Only later were the Seminole and their black allies driven to a nomadic and often subsistence existence. Blacks, many of whom the Indians counted as "slaves" but generally treated as allies, were established in separate farming communities with their own lands and livestock -- until the whites ultimately made such settlements impossible for blacks and Indians both.).

Book excerpt: In describing the true events surrounding a series of frightening bear attacks in l980, a bestselling nature/adventure author explores our relationship with the great grizzly. Many citizens of Banff, Alberta, valued living in a place where wildlife grazed on the front lawn; others saw wild bears as a mere roadside attraction. None were expecting the bear attacks that summer, which led to one man’s death. During the massive hunt that followed, Banff was portrayed in the international media as a town under siege by a killer bear, and the tourists stayed away. The pressure was on to find and destroy the Whiskey Creek mauler, but he evaded park wardens and struck again — and again. When the fight was over, the hard lessons learned led to changes that would save the lives of both bears and people in the coming years. Sid Marty’sThe Black Grizzly of Whiskey Creekis an evocative and gripping story that speaks to our complex and increasingly combative relationship with the wilderness and its inhabitants. From the Hardcover edition.

Book excerpt: “An important part of American history told with a clear-eyed and forceful brilliance.” —National Book Award winner Jacqueline Woodson “We Refuse to Forget reminds readers, on damn near every page, that we are collectively experiencing a brilliance we've seldom seen or imagined…We Refuse to Forget is a new standard in book-making.” —Kiese Laymon, author of the bestselling Heavy: An American Memoir A landmark work of untold American history that reshapes our understanding of identity, race, and belonging In We Refuse to Forget, award-winning journalist Caleb Gayle tells the extraordinary story of the Creek Nation, a Native tribe that two centuries ago both owned slaves and accepted Black people as full citizens. Thanks to the efforts of Creek leaders like Cow Tom, a Black Creek citizen who rose to become chief, the U.S. government recognized Creek citizenship in 1866 for its Black members. Yet this equality was shredded in the 1970s when tribal leaders revoked the citizenship of Black Creeks, even those who could trace their history back generations—even to Cow Tom himself. Why did this happen? How was the U.S. government involved? And what are Cow Tom’s descendants and other Black Creeks doing to regain their citizenship? These are some of the questions that Gayle explores in this provocative examination of racial and ethnic identity. By delving into the history and interviewing Black Creeks who are fighting to have their citizenship reinstated, he lays bare the racism and greed at the heart of this story. We Refuse to Forget is an eye-opening account that challenges our preconceptions of identity as it shines new light on the long shadows of white supremacy and marginalization that continue to hamper progress for Black Americans.

The people in these stories struggle to survive against rampant poverty while their drinking water is poisoned and the mountains around them are stripped away. But amongst this bleak backdrop, they find ways to love and hope and fight. Cross's raw, spare prose reflects the barren landscape his characters inhabit as they put their bodies and lives at risk just to feed their families.

Book excerpt: “Black Creek” was chosen as a name for this book because it was an active feature of my early years. Black Creek was a stream of water that flowed through Straight Hollow of Dante, Virginia and through the back yards of the houses on the south side of the railroad and street. The original name of this stream was Lick Creek, but since it flowed through the coal tipple at the head of the hollow before continuing its winding route south. At the tipple it was used to clean the dust from the coal thus changing the water to a very dark shade of black. For several years my brother, Curtis and I played in this black creek most of each day which caused our mother great concern in the ever-ending battle of evening clean-up. Since it played a continual part of each day’s activity for Curtis and me, I felt it would make an appropriate name for my bibliography

Book excerpt: This moving novel teases us with the question of what Dickens' Pip might have been like if he had grown up in the American South of the 1960s and 1970s and faced the explosive social issues that galvanized the world in those decades: racial injustice, a war abroad, women's and gay rights, class struggle. A guilty encounter with an escaped felon, a summer spent working for an eccentric man with a mysterious past, conflicted erotic feelings for his employer's niece and nephew―these events set the stage for a journey of sexual and moral discovery that takes Newt Seward to New England, Rome, and Paris―all before returning home to confront his life's many expectations and surprises. Furnace Creek effortlessly combines elements of coming-of-age story, novel of erotic discovery, Southern Gothic fiction, and detection-mystery plot. Written with a natural storyteller's gift of imagination, it leaps the frame of Dickens' masterpiece to capture the emotional intensity of characters whose lives will haunt the reader beyond the page.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Star Creek Papers is the never-before-published account of the complex realities of race relations in the rural South in the 1930s. When Horace and Julia Bond moved to Louisiana in 1934, they entered a world where the legacy of slavery was miscegenation, lingering paternalism, and deadly racism. The Bonds were a young, well-educated and idealistic African American couple working for the Rosenwald Fund, a trust established by a northern philanthropist to build schools in rural areas. They were part of the "Explorer Project" sent to investigate the progress of the school in the Star Creek district of Washington Parish. Their report, which decried the teachers' lack of experience, the poor quality of the coursework, and the students' chronic absenteeism, was based on their private journal, "The Star Creek Diary," a shrewdly observed, sharply etched, and affectionate portrait of a rural black community. Horace Bond was moved to write a second document, "Forty Acres and a Mule," a history of a black farming family, after Jerome Wilson was lynched in 1935. The Wilsons were thrifty landowners whom Bond knew and respected; he intended to turn their story into a book, but the chronicle remained unfinished at his death. These important primary documents were rediscovered by civil rights scholar Adam Fairclough, who edited them with Julia Bond's support.

Draper, four boys who call themselves the Black Dinosaurs go on a spooky camping trip filled with Native American lore. Ziggy and friends are excited about their overnight camping trip to Caesar’s Creek State Park—named after a Shawnee chief. Their camp counselor is a descendant of Caesar and fills the campers’ imaginations with fun (and spooky!) stories about her ancestors and the Shawnee legends. When Ziggy and the rest of the Clubhouse gang decide to test their courage like the Shawnee youth did, things don’t go quite as planned. And when they end up lost, strange things start to happen. Could it just be the animals roaming the woods? Or are the ancient spirits of Caesar back to haunt their old stomping grounds?
