Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bituminous Coal Mine Accounting The importance of proper accounting has probably never been more clearly felt than at the present time. The necessity for having an adequate cost accounting system has been stressed within the past few years by trade associations, government agencies and accountants generally. In the coal industry this was a particularly important subject during the recent war, sales prices being fixed by the Fuel Ad ministration based ou cost. At all times a knowledge of the cost of production is an absolute prerequisite to price making. A corporation without a cost system is like a ship without a com pass. Business is conducted for the purpose of making a profit, and the business man is entitled to a margin between his cost and selling price. An adequate cost finding system is intended to' eliminate guess work. To be of value to the industry such a cost system should be more than a historical record of trans actions long closed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bituminous Coal Mine Accounting In response to numerous requests to the National Coal Association for suggestions and more detailed forms than contained in the "Report and Suggestions" of its Cost Accounting Committee, the author prepared a series of articles on "Cost Accounting in the Bituminous Industry" which were printed in Coal Review. To meet the desire of many who wish to have these articles in more permanent and usable shape arrangements have been made to issue them in book form. Several new chapters have been added, and the subject matter has been expanded. In their original scope the articles were intended to cover only cost matters, but in this book some questions of general accounting pertinent to the bituminous coal mining industry have been touched upon also. The importance of proper accounting has probably never been more clearly felt than at the present time. The necessity for having an adequate cost accounting system has been stressed within the past few years by trade associations, government agencies and accountants generally. In the coal industry this was a particularly important subject during the recent war, sales prices being fixed by the Fuel Administration based on cost. Business is conducted for the purpose of making a profit, and the business man is entitled to a margin between his cost and selling price. An adequate cost finding system is intended to eliminate guess work. To be of value to the industry such a cost system should be more than a historical record of transactions long closed. It is questionable when a cost system is maintained merely for the purpose of history, whether it is worth the cast of its compiling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bituminous Coal Storage Practice Upon the recommendation Of the Illinois Fuel Administration, a systematic campaign was instituted by the United States Fuel Ad ministration in Washington, urging people to store coal. The con elusions and recommendations of the Engineering Experiment Station Circular no. 6* were reprinted in condensed form and given wide publicity by several State Fuel Administrations, by the Retail Coal Dealers Association Of Illinois and Wisconsin, and by the National Board Of Fire Underwriters. As a result of this campaign, it is safe to say that never before had so much attention been paid to the storage of coal as was the case in the Spring and summer of 1918. During the past year unusual attention has also been given to the subject of coal storage in England and in Canada and the con elusions which were reached in these countries, and which will be referred to later in fuller detail, agree very closely with the experience in the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Coal Mining Institute of America, Pittsburgh, Pa, 1907 This law, as it now stands, together with the fact that the bill was read three times in the House of Representatives and passed unanimously, is not only proof that the committee was well selected and competent for the duties assigned it, but is a credit to each one serving upon that committee. It is the best indorsement that could be given that its work was intelligently, faithfully and sincerely performed. Just what the fate of this bill will be in the Senate 1 am unable to say, but this I do know, and firmly believe, if it fails to pass, it will not be by reason of any failure on the part of the committee to do its duty.
