Book excerpt: Fate and a Fulbright grant allowed my world to collide with that of this collection’s author. Jo and I met through a friend of a friend while I was teaching English in a remote city on the island of Borneo. We became fast friends, and I was honored when she asked me if I would edit her poetry. When she told me about her goal to write 100 poems in her second language in the span of only a few months, I was blown away. As the poems steadily arrived in my inbox for revision, I had an opportunity to see the fruit of so much personal reflection I have come to associate with Jo. I found her candor, hope, heartbreak, love, and longing to be tangible when we spoke in person about everything and nothing. Reading her poetry, I had the pleasure of exploring those same emotions further through her writing. The basic, innate human cravings for love, acknowledgement, friendship, and communion are highlighted in Jo’s collection of poems, Sweet & Bitter Memory. In this compilation of thoughts, reflections, and dreams, we simultaneously explore Jo’s experience with and projections of love. She bares her wounds, unanswered questions, and disappointments on one page, while exposing her innocence, idealism, and deep belief in the power of romance on the next. These poems account, for the good, the bad, and the transcendental moments in love and relationships. Her work leaves us wondering where the true nature of love lies or if there is really such a thing. I am moved by the universality of love and the catholic yearning for connection and relationship. One of the most powerful aspects of this compilation of poetry is its potential reach. Publishing the book in English opens doors for Jo and her writing, as well as providing audiences around the world with the ability to examine the heart of a young Indonesian woman through her poetry. What we learn from Jo is a lesson not soon forgotten. Her hopes, dreams, and disappointments are unique yet deeply rooted in the human experience. As readers, we can tap into this duality and acknowledge the interconnection of people from seemingly disparate backgrounds. It has been a pleasure editing these poems and working with Jo to produce a literary work that can have a real impact on real lives. I look forward to seeing what is next professionally and personally for our author. I have a feeling there will be many more wonderful literary works in our future. Enjoy the wonderful opportunity this book presents – getting to know an ambitious, sweet, intelligent, humble human being.

Book excerpt: Multiple personalities take over Sarah's mind...only so they can protect her. Abducted by her father when she was three years old, Sarah found herself in a world of criminal neglect and unfathomable oppression as her father, stepmother and many others perpetrated more and more horrible acts of verbal, mental and sexual abuse on the innocent girl. Sarah, so continually terrified, began to form separate personalities so that she herself did not have to face the hideous reality of her day to day life. In nightmares, the other personalities would present to her the horrific abuse she was being subjected to, blocking out time for Sarah, bearing the horror of the experiences themselves so their dear Sarah would not have to. Although the names in this unforgettable story have been changed from those in real life, the horrors that occurred are factual. This tale of the author's early life is a true and unnervingly gripping account of the extremes of neglect and mistreatment a child can undergo-and still survive. Told from the heart, "Bitter Memories" is dedicated to all survivors of abuse; written in the hope that exposing these horrors will help prevent them from happening to others, and that more survivors will find a path toward healing. Contains adult language and graphic content.

Book Synopsis The Art and Science of Reminiscing by : Jeffrey D. Webster
Download or read book The Art and Science of Reminiscing written by Jeffrey D. Webster and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although recognition of reminiscing as a potentially adaptive process can be traced back over 30 years to the seminal work of Robert Butler as discussed in the Foreword, there has been little effort to consolidate the work and paint a complete picture of reminiscing as an entity. Here, reminiscing is presented as a multi-disciplinary topic, examining the theory of, and research on, reminiscing. The book also discusses the different ways of conducting life-review interviews and explores therapeutic applications.; Contributors to this book, many of whom are pioneers and leading figures in the field, discuss and elaborate their latest thinking and research findings from multiple perspectives. The volume's strength derives from its multi-disciplinary nursing, psychiatry, psychology, gerontology, community advocacy and multinational Australia, Canada, England, Sweden and the United States treatment. James Birren, Irene Burnside, and Phillipe Cappeliez are a few of the eminent scholars authoring this volume.

Book Synopsis Korea at the Center: Dynamics of Regionalism in Northeast Asia by : Charles K. Armstrong
Download or read book Korea at the Center: Dynamics of Regionalism in Northeast Asia written by Charles K. Armstrong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common images of Korea view the peninsula as a long-standing battleground for outside powers and the Cold War's last divided state. But, Korea's location at the very center of Northeast Asia gives it a pivotal role in the economic integration of the region and the dynamic development of its more powerful neighbors. A great wave of economic expansion, driven first by the Japanese miracle and then by the ascent of China, has made South Korea - an economic powerhouse in its own right - the hub of the region once again, a natural corridor for railroads and energy pipelines linking Asiatic Russia to China and Japan. And, over the horizon, an opening of North Korea, with multilateral support, would add another major push toward regional integration. Illuminating the role of the Korean peninsula in three modern historical periods, the eminent international contributors to this volume offer a fresh and stimulating appraisal of Korea as the key to the coalescence of a broad, open Northeast Asian regionalism in the twenty-fifth century.
Book Synopsis Memory Lands by : Christine M. DeLucia
Download or read book Memory Lands written by Christine M. DeLucia and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noted historian Christine DeLucia offers a major reconsideration of the violent seventeenth-century conflict in northeastern America known as King Philip’s War, providing an alternative to Pilgrim-centric narratives that have conventionally dominated the histories of colonial New England. DeLucia grounds her study of one of the most devastating conflicts between Native Americans and European settlers in early America in five specific places that were directly affected by the crisis, spanning the Northeast as well as the Atlantic world. She examines the war’s effects on the everyday lives and collective mentalities of the region’s diverse Native and Euro-American communities over the course of several centuries, focusing on persistent struggles over land and water, sovereignty, resistance, cultural memory, and intercultural interactions. An enlightening work that draws from oral traditions, archival traces, material and visual culture, archaeology, literature, and environmental studies, this study reassesses the nature and enduring legacies of a watershed historical event.
