Download or read book Biting the Hand that Starves You written by Richard Linn Maisel and published by W W Norton & Company Incorporated. This book was released on 2004 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book immediately draws the reader into the world of those struggling with anorexia/bulimia (a/b), whose stories, poems, and first-person accounts expose the 'voice' of these deadly problems. The authors' decade-and-a-half collaboration with 'insiders' has yielded fresh answers to these life and death questions: How does a/b seduce and terrorize girls and women? Why is a/b successful in encouraging girls and women to unwittingly embrace their would-be murderer? How can such a murderer be exposed and thwarted? Biting the Hand that Starves You details a unique way of thinking and speaking about anorexia/bulimia. By having conversations with insiders in which the problem is viewed as an external influence rather than a part of the person, these therapists show how to bring the tactics of a/b into the open, expose its deceptions, break its spell, and encourage defiance of its tyrannical rule. These innovations enable insiders, professionals, and loved ones to unite against anorexia/bulimia rather than allowing a/b to pit a professional or loved one against an insider, and the insider against herself. Coercion is sidestepped in favor of practices that are collaborative, accountable and spirit-nurturing. The groundbreaking discoveries outlined in this book will provide new options, inspiration and hope, not only for those who suffer at anorexia's hands, but also for their loved ones and healthcare professionals. The first section of the book illuminates the means by which anorexia/bulimia insinuates itself into the lives of women and confines them to its prison. The second section focuses on how therapists and other helpers assist them to break the spell of a/b, creating possibilities for resisting and defying it. The third section of the book details a two-pronged strategy for reclaiming one's life from a/b. One method involves unmasking a/b by directly engaging with it through critique. The other method involves disengaging from anorexia in order fashion an 'anti-a/b' lifestyle guided by their own values and passions, even while they fear forsaking the promises of anorexia. Finally, the last section of the book addresses ways in which parents and other loved ones can 'team up' with insiders to fight against these lethal problems. This section includes a first-person account of a mother and father's harrowing but ultimately triumphant effort to free their daughter from anorexia's prison. Biting the Hand that Starves You draws to an unprecedented degree on the anti-anorexic/bulimic knowledge of 'insider' clients/collaborators to provide fresh insights into the workings of a/b and the means to overcome it. The knowledge of these authors and their insider collaborators, who speak poignantly and passionately on their own behalf, is sure to benefit all those affected by a/b.

Book Synopsis Seven Poets, Four Days, One Book by : Dean Young
Download or read book Seven Poets, Four Days, One Book written by Dean Young and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lauded poet Christopher Merrill hatched a brilliant plan: invite six other poets to join him in four days of writing in Iowa City. The poets would write for 30 minutes, creating a poem of 15 lines, and then read it aloud to the group. As poets heard the poems, they noted memorable words, images, and lines, which they would borrow to insert in subsequent poems of their own. These rounds continued, until, in a process of call and response and unprecedented collaboration, 80 poems had been composed. Those 80 poems are collected in this book, penned by authors who represent some of the best and brightest the world of poetry has to offer. Transcending differences of generation, gender, language, and vision, these poets have invented an entirely new facet of the poet’s creative process.

Book excerpt: A small North Carolina mountain community is shocked when renowned bluegrass singer, Angel Bernard, is found murdered in her home. An unseasonably cold rain begins to fall that night. Fiona, Angel's teenage daughter and a gifted artist, falls into despair as her father withdraws. Fiona's only comfort is her grandmother, Rose. Unfortunately, Rose must travel for a few days, leaving Fiona alone with her alcoholic father. Before she departs, she asks Fiona to complete her latest painting and gives her a ruby necklace along with an incredible story that it was given to her grandmother by a unicorn. On the night before Rose's return, Fiona decides to honor her grandmother's wish and finish the painting. Around midnight, she grows sleepy and goes to bed, when suddenly she awakes, feeling quite cold. She looks out the window and sees that snow has replaced the rain, so she decides to paint a while longer. Fiona's life takes a surprising turn when she is suddenly sucked through her painting, landing in another world. Leollyn, teenage daughter of a local dairy farmer (Averi), discovers Fiona asleep on the hot dusty path in her world: the LoherLans. Leollyn's world, threatened by scorching heat, is on the verge of total destruction. The young elf takes a dazed Fiona home to her parents, who, having anticipated their arrival, impart words of an age-old prophecy to the girls. In the prophecy, Leollyn and Fiona are named as the chosen saviors of the universe; to save both worlds, the girls must embark on a quest to vanquish an evil force (Grimgorrah) and rescue a dragon: one of two dragons that balance the forces of nature. Averi also presents Leollyn with a beautiful blue jewel: the twin to the red gem Fiona wears. Averi accompanies the girls through a secret underground tunnel system to safely deliver them into the hands of his lifelong friend, Mirgaynia, an immortal phaerie. In Mirgaynia's home (Wood Haven), the girls gather more information about the prophecy. They learn, to their relief, that other creatures in the land have also been predestined to lend aid to the chosen heirs; thus unity is formed to defeat Grimgorrah and restore balance to the worlds. Before they leave Wood Haven, Mirgaynia explains that each race in the land has a special gift, each possessing a unique ability essential to the quest's success. Her gift is a magical mirror and a traveling companion: Jareth, a unicorn. The unity must secure the remaining gifts before they arrive in Fayor, the land where Grimgorrah has erected his fortress. As they journey east, the girls meet an assortment of magical creatures (dwarves, wravens, sylphs, and merfolk) each with their own role to play in the fated quest. They witness hardship, near-death experiences, and feelings of defeat as the journey progresses and as their problems become more difficult to solve. Fiona enters the LoherLans with only a paintbrush, a brass key, and a copper penny, unaware that each of these items has a unique function in this new world that is sizzling with magic. Leollyn takes with her on the journey an embroidered handkerchief, a hand-carved flute, and an intricately carved bird statue, each of which also plays a vital role if the quest is to succeed. Fiona ultimately discovers information about her ancestry and why she was named as the heir to the prophecy. Even armed with knowledge, she experiences doubt and hardship as she attempts to make sense of her new life, possibly a life in a new world without her family. Faith in a Dragon addresses a teenage girl's struggle to accept her destiny and rely on her faith to survive. Will the girls persevere and return balance to both worlds? Will they be able to uphold their faith, fulfill their destinies? Will Fiona see her family again? The story ends with a twist and sets the scene for a sequel. The thrilling journey, filled with magic, suspense, and unexpected turns around every corner begins . . . in Faith in a Dragon.

Download or read book The Price written by Francis Lynde and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Price by Francis Lynde is about Griswold's life as a news writer and his final supper with his good friend, Bainbridge, a local blue-collar worker and conservative. Excerpt: "In the days when New Orleans still claimed distinction as the only American city without trolleys, sky-scrapers, or fast trains—was it yesterday? or the day before?—there was a dingy, cobwebbed café in an arcade off Camp Street which was well-beloved of newspaperdom, particularly of that wing of the force whose activities begin late and end in the small hours. "Chaudière's," it was called, though I know not if that were the name of the round-faced, round-bodied little Marseillais who took tolls at the desk. But all men knew the fame of its gumbo and its stuffed crabs, and that its claret was neither very bad nor very dear."
