Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bishop Gore and the Catholic Claims Some seventy years ago certain minds in the Established Church were earnestly intent on searching out a via media in religion, i.e, a middle ground between what was known as "Roman" doctrine and mere Protestantism. In this voyage of discovery the pioneer was the illustrious Newman. To this he for some years devoted his talents, his learning, and his best energies in the hope of finding security for himself and others in the bosom of the Church in which he had been brought up, and which he still cherished as a mother. The result of it all was that he found he had to give up the task as hopeless, and he sought safety for his own soul by submitting to the Holy, Roman, and Catholic Church. His secession might well have proved the death-blow to all via media enterprise; yet since that day others have ventured upon it with hope that they might succeed where he failed. Of these not the least distinguished by his ability, learning, and religious earnestness is Dr. Gore, who has recently been enthroned as bishop of the newly-founded Anglican See of Birmingham. His book on Roman Catholic Claims appears to be in great demand. It is mainly an attack on the positions we hold. And there can be little doubt that many of the unwary who read it will regard it as conclusive against our claims, and not a few are being held back who would otherwise feel disposed to follow Newman into the Catholic Church. For the sake of these, and for the benefit of those who come to us in an inquiring frame of mind, the "Reply" of Dom Chapman, O.S.B., to the "Roman Catholic Claims" will be found most useful. Book Synopsis The Papacy: Revisiting the Debate Between Catholics and Orthodox by : Erick Ybarra
Download or read book The Papacy: Revisiting the Debate Between Catholics and Orthodox written by Erick Ybarra and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord Jesus Christ intended his kingdom present on earth, the Church of God, to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Prior to the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, history tells of the most egregious division in the Church between the Latin West and Byzantine East in AD 1054 and following. How can it be that Catholics and Orthodox share a thousand years of ecclesial life together in one faith, sacramental order, and hierarchical government, only to have that bond of communion broken? Historians and theologians throughout the years have spilled much ink in recounting the causes and effects of this dreadful and heart-wrenching division, and among the many debates that exist between Catholics and Orthodox, none are as vital to the task of reconciliation as the subject of the papacy. In The Papacy: Revisiting the Debate between Catholics and Orthodox, Erick Ybarra examines sources from the first millennium with a fresh look at how methodology and hermeneutics plays a role in the reading of the same texts. In addition, he conducts a detailed investigation into the most significant points of history in order to show what was clearly accepted by both East and West in their years of ecclesiastical unity. In light of this clear evidence, the reader of The Papacy is free to decide whether contemporary Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy has maintained the heritage of the first millennium on the understanding of the Papal office.

Book Synopsis Documents Illustrating Papal Authority by : E Giles
Download or read book Documents Illustrating Papal Authority written by E Giles and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE is unfortunately a wide gulf between the Roman Catholic and Anglican views on Church authority. Roman Catholics claim universal jurisdiction for the Pope as by divine law,1 and the Anglican Article 37 denies such jurisdiction. Further, Roman Catholics believe that a divided Church is impossible, and go on to assume that their communion, which claims to be the whole Church, must be so. Anglicans believe that the Church militant ought not to be divided, but in fact is. They frequently express their faith in "one Catholick and Apostolick Church," and suppose, for example, that the provinces of Canterbury and York are provinces of that Church and that Christians all over the world who are in communion with the see of Canterbury are bona fide members thereof, in spite of their separation from the Roman see. "The divisibility of the Church," says Dom Chapman, "is the cardinal doctrine of Anglicanism and its most fundamental heresy." During the last hundred years a vast number of controversial books have been published on this dispute. They often turn on the authority held by the early bishops of Rome, both sides quoting from the fathers in support of their views. This is sometimes called "the appeal to history." The most popular of such works are Roman Catholic Claims by Charles Gore, 1st edition 1888, 11th edition 1921, and the reply to the 9th edition by Dom John Chapman, called Bishop Gore and the Catholic Claims, 1905. The chief excuse for my book is that extracts from the fathers, when seen in their context, so often give a different picture from that which they give when quoted briefly by controversial writers. Most readers of controversy have neither the time nor the knowledge to enable them to go to libraries, check the references, and translate into English. Yet it is obvious that an author with art axe to grind must never be taken at his own valuation. He needs to be checked at every turn. Our Documents are therefore collected to put at the disposal of the English reader the raw material necessary for the study of this dispute. Most of them are quoted or cited in one or both of the two books just mentioned, and reference to these is given in all such cases at the end of the Document, the author's name and page number only being printed. By using these two works mainly for the selection of the Documents, I have kept the book within bounds, and I hope I have been balanced in my selection. I should have liked to avoid all notes and comments, but this seemed impossible. It has been necessary to link the Documents to the history of the Church, and in some cases to show how they have been used by the axe-grinders. To do this fairly is not easy.
Book Synopsis The Divine Primacy of the Bishop of Rome and Modern Eastern Orthodoxy by : James Likoudis
Download or read book The Divine Primacy of the Bishop of Rome and Modern Eastern Orthodoxy written by James Likoudis and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite real progress in ecumenical relations between Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, the last several years have seen an increase in bitter attacks on papal supremacy and infallibility. In this newly revised and expanded work, James Likoudis treats in detail Eastern Orthodox ecclesiology and replies to objections made to critical elements of Roman Catholic doctrine on: The pope’s primacy of supremacy and infallibility, The procession of the Holy Spirit, The filioque clause, The dogma of the Immaculate Conception, Purgatory, and The development of doctrine. With The Divine Primacy of the Bishop of Rome & Modern Eastern Orthodoxy, Likoudis contributes to today’s Catholic–Orthodox dialog by going back to the “undivided Church of the First Millennium,” where we see clearly the existence of a papal primacy of universal jurisdiction.
