Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Lakeside and Prairie If the perusal of this little volume gives the reader one tithe of the pleasure which the gathering of the material gave the writer, the printing of the pages will not have been in vain. The lakesides and prairies of the Middle West are rich in bird life. The Opera glass is a much more satisfactory field companion than the shot gun. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer Birds of Flathead Lake Following an easy trail leading somewhat southeast from the lake, the collector passes through a wide ravine for about a mile, and reaches a small lake or pond a few acres in extent, surrounded by a woodland free from undergrowth. Here tall handsome yellow pines (pinus ponderosa) abound, in whose tops are seen occasional flocks of chirping crossbills, lisping cedar waxwings, and other inhabitants of the woods. West of the lake there lies an extensive region of lower primeval woodland alternating with bushy hillside, through which the outlet of the lake dashes on its course to the prairie region of the Flathead Indian Reservation, all forming an ideal collecting ground, certain to repay the careful attention of the ornithologist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Colorado The notes on migration given in the following table are designed to show the different time at which the same species of birds arrive at different places and altitudes in Colorado as compared with the time of their arrival in the same latitude farther east and at a lower altitude. St. Louis, Mo., is thirty miles farther north than Fort Lyon, Colo., and one hundred and twenty miles south of Loveland, Colo. Hence, according to latitude, the birds should arrive in St. Louis about the same time as at Fort Lyon. But it is found that in fact they reach St. Louis on the average about twelve days before they appear at Fort Lyon. The dates Of arrival seem to indicate an aver age difference Of six days between Fort Lyon and Loveland. The distance between these two places is one hundred and fifty miles, or an average movement for the birds of twenty-five miles per day. This agrees quite closely with the average of twenty-eight miles per day that was found to be the usual speed of migration in the Mississippi valley. Some of the earlier work is a half century old, and to make this conform to the present nomenclature Without having the specimens to consult, is more difficult than it appears on the onset. Where the early data could be placed unquestionably this Was done. In other cases they were as a rule placed in accordance with the recent geographical distribution of the species. Since there are many eastern and western forms that mingle in eastern Wyoming it will be necessary to have extensive collections made before many points can be settled. The fact that many new species and varieties have been. Named during the last quarter of a century caused a great deal of confusion, since in many cases it was impossible to tell anything about the specimens that had been collected.
