Book excerpt: In this monograph about gene therapy of autoimmune and inflammatory d- orders we have gathered international experts and leaders from different fields to review the state of the art advances on topics ranging from disease entities to vectors and engineered cells. The different approaches described in each chapter take into consideration the biomedical knowledge of these diseases and address the complexities of delivering long-term genetic interventions. Gene therapy also serves as a testing ground for new therapeutic entities and helps provide proof of principle for their potential therapeutic role in animal models of disease. Scaling up from mice to men still remains an important h- dle not only from the quantitative point of view, but also for currently unknown and unexpected secondary effects of the vector or the transgene. Some of these approaches have already been tested in the clinic, but much more needs to be done to understand the human conditions treated and the n- ural history of their pathology. We are indebted to the secretarial assistance of Ms. Lin Wells (Bone and Joint Research Unit, London, UK) and the help of Hans Detlef Klüber for his help in getting this book published. We hope this book will be of interest to c- nicians and scientists and inspiring to students of the subject who will use their own ingenuity and knowledge to further forward this discipline into clinical use.

Book excerpt: It is with great pleasure that I write this Foreword to the Proceedings of the International Conference on Behçet’s Disease which was held in Berlin in June 2002. This was the first International Conference held under the auspices of the International Society for Behçet’s Disease which was founded in 2000 in Seoul. First, I congratulate our colleagues in Berlin, led by Professor Christos Zouboulis of the Department of Dermatology at the Free University of Berlin, for having organised a most successful conference and for having compiled these proceedings so rapidly. It will be realised immediately on scanning the contents of this book that the conference was truly international with 210 participants from 26 countries, as Professor Zouboulis has noted in his preface. These included basic scientists, epidemiologists, pathologists, clinicians and, importantly, representatives from patient organisations. The latter held their own conference alongside the scientific-medical conference to mutual benefit. The combined session of patients and doctors (abstracts on pp 601 – 626) gave the opportunity for an exchange of information and fruitful discussion. The wide ranging scope of the communications is evident from the index and it was most encouraging to see their origin – from all parts of the world, from senior and junior colleagues and, from many different disciplines. Many communications may be regarded as preliminary reports of research in progress and we look forward to seeing the definitive publications in appropriate journals in due course.

Book excerpt: The nature .and diversity of presentations at the conference on: "Bee Products: Prop erties, Applications and Apitherapy" held at Tel-Aviv on May 26--30, 1996, emphasize the increasing interest of physicians, practitioners, scientists, herbalists, dieticians, cosmeti cians, microbiologists, and beekeepers in different facets of bee products. This volume consists of a selection of 31 contributions presented at the conference and which provide information on the present status of our knowledge in this area. In spite of their diversity, they reflect the mainstream of the conference, namely: "Imported" Prod ucts (honey, pollen and propolis), Exocrine Secretions of Workers (venom, royal jelly). Toxicity and Contaminants, Quality Control, Marketing, Apitherapy, Cosmetics, etc. Since antiquity, honey as well as other bee products were used as food, as a cure for ailments of humans and animals, and as cosmetics. We hope that this volume will contribute to interdisciplinary studies on chemical composition, pharmacological effects, nutrition, and other aspects of bee products. Critical and unbiased experimental research may unravel the yet unknown composition and mode of action of bee products and elucidate many unanswered questions. The noteworthy features of this conference were the participants from all parts of the world and of different cultural backgrounds, who shared their keen interest and curios ity regarding honey bees and their products. We thank all of them for their personal con tribution to the success of this conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Their etiology remains largely unknown, and current therapy with anti-inflammatory drugs is prone to adverse effects, and rarely curative. New therapies with anti-cytokine antibodies or receptors are promising, but require frequent administration of expensive protein drugs. Gene Therapy of Autoimmune Diseases comprehensively reviews research in gene therapy for autoimmune diseases with viral or non-viral vectors. Gene therapy offers the possibility of long-term, continuous delivery of a wide variety of immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory, or tolerance-inducing agents. Moreover, highly specific genetically modified cells can be produced. This book discusses the most promising avenues in this exciting new field.

Carefully designed, Treatment of Non-infectious Uveitis is the first book of its kind to provide an in-depth, clinically-relevant, expert-driven resource for ophthalmologists focusing on modalities of uveitis treatment, their mechanism of action, dosing, and side effects. Each chapter provides an introduction, mechanism of action, indication, dosage, side effects, and efficacy summaries from clinical trials and other published literature. Topics range from topical treatment, to locally administered therapy including drug-releasing implants, to systemic immunosuppressive treatments both tried and new, as well as surgical management, with each chapter highlighting important practice pearls as well as easy-reference dosing tables, side effects, and lab monitoring pertinent to the agents discussed. The book concludes with a discussion of novel approaches to the treatment of non-infectious uveitis, and special considerations when treating uveitis in the pediatric patient. The majority of patients with non-infectious uveitis are treated by comprehensive ophthalmologists, many of whom are less familiar with established treatment guidelines outlining the role of corticosteroids and immunomodulatory therapy. While the non-specialist, resident, or fellow is sure to benefit from this one-stop guide to uveitis treatment, retina and uveitis specialists alike will also appreciate the practice tips and thorough coverage of this expertly-written reference. Treatment of Non-infectious Uveitis is the ideal reference for all ophthalmologists who seek to improve their understanding of the causes of uveitis and learn how to best treat this condition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compendium on Rheumatic Diseases found its origin in the successful EULAR on-line course on rheumatic diseases. The yearly updated reviews of the fifty modules of that course form the content of this book. Each chapter is written by two dedicated expert rheumatologists from two different countries, to get a balanced view. Most of them were assisted by a junior doctor or researcher from their own department, in order to stimulate focus on modern educational goals and techniques. The fifty chapters, encompassing the whole spectrum of rheumatology, brought together in a textbook, are a vital part of rheumatologists' continuing medical education, keeping doctors up to date in daily practice. The structure of the chapters in the Compendium is the same as the one of the modules in the on-line course: starting with learning points, text with many figures, tables and pictures, a summary, and a limited number of key references.
