Chapter 1 is devoted to methodology attempts to explain the special features of a biophysical approach. The biophysical principles of the most commonly used modem methods such as the clearance method and rheoencephalography are described in detail. The second and third chapters examine all the biophysical aspects of the cerebral circulatory system as a functional unit and deal with some principles of its regulation. The results of systems analysis using mathematical modeling are presented in broad outline. Chapter 4 deals with processes related to the regional cerebral circulation. Such investigations focus mainly on the relationship between periodically fluctuating factors affecting limited areas of brain tissue. This text is beneficial to medical students and individuals researching on cerebral circulation.

As these ethnic groups account for more than 70% of the world’s population, it is in fact the major cause of ischemic stroke worldwide. This timely book provides readers with up-to-date knowledge of intracranial atherosclerosis, covering vascular anatomy, pathology, epidemiology, stroke mechanisms and syndromes, diagnostic methods as well as treatment strategies such as antithrombotics, angioplasty/stenting and surgery. Furthermore, nonatherosclerotic intracranial arterial diseases like Moyamoya disease, dissection, vasculitis and other miscellaneous disorders are extensively discussed. Experts from both East and West present the latest findings from cutting-edge research and discuss controversial topics from different yet balanced points of view, allowing readers to form their own unbiased opinion on these issues. With this approach, the book serves as a useful and stimulating guide on the diagnosis and management of intracranial atherosclerosis for neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and vascular interventionists.

Book excerpt: From engineering fundamentals to cutting-edge clinical applications This book examines the biological effects of RF/microwaves and their medical applications. Readers will discover new developments in therapeutic applications in such areas as cardiology, urology, surgery, ophthalmology, and oncology. The authors also present developing applications in such areas as cancer detection and organ imaging. Focusing on frequency ranges from 100 kHz to 10 GHz, RF/Microwave Interaction with Biological Tissues is divided into six chapters: * Fundamentals in Electromagnetics--examines penetration of RF/microwaves into biological tissues; skin effect; relaxation effects in materials and the Cole-Cole model (display); the near field of an antenna; blackbody radiation and the various associated laws; and microwave measurements. * RF/Microwave Interaction Mechanisms in Biological Materials--includes a section devoted to the fundamentals of thermodynamics and a discussion on energy and entropy. * Biological Effects--investigates the effects of radio frequency fields on the nervous system, the brain and spinal cord, the blood-brain barrier, and cells and membranes. * Thermal Therapy--includes a description of applicators and an extensive discussion on the foundation of dielectric heating and inductive heating. * EM-Wave Absorbers Protecting the Biological and Medical Environment--investigates materials for EM-wave absorbers from both a theoretical and applications perspective. Special attention is given to ferrite absorbers. * RF/Microwave Delivery Systems for Therapeutic Applications--begins with the fundamental features of major components used in RF/microwave delivery systems for therapeutic applications. New research towards the development of future measurement techniques is also presented. The book features problem sets at the end of each chapter, making it an excellent introduction for bioengineering and engineering students. Researchers, physicians, and technicians in the field will also find this an excellent reference that offers all the fundamentals, the most cutting-edge applications, and insight into future developments. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that's the stuff life is made oj': Benjamin Franklin This book describes the technical principles and applications of echo-planar imaging (EPI) which, as much as any other technique, has shaped the develop ment of modern magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The principle of EPI, namely, the acquisition of multiple nuclear magnetic resonance echoes from a single spin excitation, has made it possible to shorten the previously time-con suming MRI data acquisition from minutes to much less than a second. Interest ingly, EPI is one of the oldest MRI techniques, conceived in 1976 by Sir Peter Mansfield only 4 years after the initial description of the principles of MRI. One of the inventors of MRI himself, Mansfield realized that fast data acquisition would be paramount in bringing medical applications of MRI to full fruition. The technological challenges in implementing EPI, however, were formidable. Until the end of the 1980s few people believed that EPI would be clinically useful, since its complexity was far greater than that of "conventional" MRI methods.

Book excerpt: Microwave Fixation of Labile Metabolites documents the proceedings of an official Satellite Symposium of the 8th International Congress of Pharmacology held in Tokyo, Japan, on 25 July 1981. The Symposium was entitled ""Drug Effects on Rapidly Metabolized Compounds in the CNS: Rapid Tissue Fixation with Microwave Irradiation."" The volume begins with a discussion of the use of microwave irradiation to study the concentration and interrelationships of neurochemicals in the brain. This is followed by papers on the effects of immobilization on the increases in cerebellar cyclic GMP induced by cold exposure or apomorphine; importance of rapid enzymatic inactivation prior to the determination of endogenous levels of catecholamines; use of glycolic acid to study catecholamines in the brain following microwave irradiation. Also include are studies on methods for preventing the post mortem increase in ?-aminobutyric acid (GABA); the effect of microwave irradiation on catecholamine levels in the central nervous system; and effect of microwave irradiation in the brain histamine level of rats.
