Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines all aspects of the progress being made towards the development of highly specific and sensitive biomarkers that will overcome the shortcomings of clinical assessments in periodontics. The opening chapters present the basic anatomic features of periodontal tissues, outline the nature and pathogenic mechanisms of periodontal diseases, and discuss both conventional and novel methods of diagnosis with reference to their specificity and sensitivity. The potential role of biomarkers in periodontal diagnosis is then presented in the light of the published data. The biological samples in which potential biomarkers are sought are evaluated comparatively, drawing attention to their strengths and weaknesses, and the available technologies for biomarker studies are reviewed. The potential benefits of biomarkers are also discussed with regard to the possible bidirectional interactions between periodontal diseases and systemic health. Finally, the past, present, and future of periodontics are examined from a broader perspective. Readers will find the book to be an ideal summary of the state of the art in the field as biomarkers emerge that promise to facilitate periodontal diagnostics and permit timely, personally tailored interventions.

This book is divided into three sections. Section 1 discusses the periodontal disease pathogenesis and how the disease develops and the contributing factors in disease development. Section 2 includes three chapters that focus mainly on the most common and recent biomarkers that aid in diagnosis of periodontal diseases. Section 3 includes one chapter and discusses a non-surgical treatment modality that could provide definite improvement in the mild to moderate conditions in periodontal diseases.

Book excerpt: This book provides information on biomarkers found in oral fluids relevant to oral and systemic diseases, with emphasis on salivary molecules and their potential to provide screening diagnosis for periodontal disease. The book will provide greater impact on clinician education in diagnostics, disease-risk and disease prevention through the public health sector before diagnostics will be integrated into routine clinical periodontal practice. Although challenges remain ahead, the use of saliva based oral fluid diagnostics appear promising for future application to diagnose periodontal diseases and to prognosticate periodontal treatment outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salivary Diagnostics surveys one of the most exciting areas of research in oral biology. Regarded as the mirror of the body, saliva has immense potential to yield real clinical improvements in our ability to diagnose, and hence treat, oral and systemic conditions. The composition of saliva and other oral fluids reflects the tissue fluid levels of therapeutic, hormonal, and immunological molecules, as well as the presence of markers for systemic and oral disease.

Book excerpt: Periodontitis is an infection-induced inflammatory disease of the tooth supporting tissues. Treatment of periodontal diseases and regeneration of the effected tissues can be possible only in the early diagnosis of the disease. If left undiagnosed or untreated, periodontitis leads to irreversible soft and hard tissue destruction and finally to tooth loss. Saliva is known to contain inflammatory mediators, host tissue and cell degradation products as well as microbial metabolites and enzymes, reflecting the health status of the oral cavity. In this topic, in collaboration with the well-known scientists working on the field of salivary diagnostics, we demonstrate evidence on monitoring periodontitis by salivary analysis.

Intracellular enzymes are increasingly released from the damaged cells of periodontal tissues into the gingival crevicular fluid and saliva. It has been a great challenge to determine biomarkers for screening and predicting the early onset of disease (prognostic tests) or evaluating the disease activity and the efficacy of therapy.Various enzymes evaluated for the early diagnosis of periodontal disease are aspartate and alanine aminotransferases ( AST, ALT ), lactate dehydrogenase ( LDH ), creatine kinase ( CK ), alkaline and acid phosphatase ( ALP, ACP ) and gamma glutamiltransferase ( GGT ), myeloperoxidase ( MPO ). The activities of CK, LDH, AST, ALT, GGT, ALP, ACP, MPO, enzymes are found to be increased in periodontal diseases. Thus, an attempt has been made to review the diagnostic value of salivary enzymes in the diagnosis and progression of periodontal disease.

Book excerpt: Interleukin (IL) - 18 may be one of the cytokines responsible for initiation and progression of periodontal destruction. IL-18 concentration in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and serum increases proportionally with the progression of periodontal disease. Periodontal inflammation may not successfully resolve because of accumulation of IL-18.Periodontal inflammation may not successfully resolve because of accumulation of IL-18. Further, the treatment aimed at arresting periodontal disease progression resulted in statistically significant reduction in the levels of IL-18 both in GCF and serum proportionally. It is very probable that the relatively high levels of IL-18 in GCF in periodontal disease signify it as an important factor in periodontal destruction. Thus, it can be considered as an inflammatory biomarker for periodontal disease and deserves further considerations in the development of preventive and therapeutic methods for treating periodontal disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodontitis is a disease characterized by loss of connective tissue attachment and bone around the teeth in conjunction with the formation of periodontal pockets due to the apical migration of the junctional epithelium.Early diagnosis and treatment of progressive periodontitis is important because of the irreversible nature of this disease. Traditional clinical measurements used for periodontal diagnosis are often of limited usefulness in that they are indicators of previous periodontal disease rather than present disease activity. There is a need for development of new diagnostic tests that can detect the presence of active disease, predict future disease progression and evaluate the response to periodontal therapy, thereby improving the clinical management of periodontal patients. This book discusses the role of oral bio-markers in the diagnosis and progression of periodontal disease and describes the role of GCF -Glucuronidase levels as a diagnostic tool and measure of treatment outcome in patients with chronic periodontitis."

Book excerpt: Periodontitis - A Useful Reference is a comprehensive book compiled by a team of experts with the objective of providing an overview of the basic pathology of "periodontitis" and its implication on oral health and general systemic health. Periodontitis has become a global health burden in recent days. It is noteworthy that oral health is being considered as the mirror of general health and the study of oral-systemic health connections has advanced among scientists, clinicians, and the public as well. We wish the array of chapters that highlights the importance and impact of periodontal health could be a useful guide for the community of public, students, and clinicians.
