Book Synopsis Actinomycetes in Biotechnology by : Bozzano G Luisa
Download or read book Actinomycetes in Biotechnology written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The actinomycetes are a group of bacteria well known as producers of antibiotics. With the advent of molecular biology they have become important to biotechnologists in the search for new antibiotics, vitamins, enzyme inhibitors, etc. They also play an important role in the biodegradation of wastes, and their wide (natural) distribution in soil, composts, water and elsewhere in the environment makes them important to the agricultural and waste industries. This research book presents a broad view of the current interest in actinomycetes, ranging from isolation/screening of actinomycetes, discovery of new antibiotics, a substantial contribution on genetic manipulation to actinomycetes in agriculture, forestry, and the threat of actinomycetes as pollutants in the environment. The chapters, which have been written by experts, are intended to provide a balanced view of the opportunities and problems in an expanding field of interest.

The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph Drobci ledenodobnega okolja ("Fragments of Ice Age environments") presents a compilation of seventeen chapters in which experts from different scientific fields discuss specific topics related to the Ice Age in Europe. Ten of them are devoted to the presentation, analysis and interpretation of palaeontological data concerning various large mammal species ranging from mastodon and mammoth to the cave hyena, ibex, cave lion and bears, with the emphasis being placed on the cave bear. Several chapters address the topic of Last Glacial climatic conditions in the Southeastern Alps by studying fossil micromammal and palaeobotanical remains as well as geoarchaeologiocal data. A special article is devoted to a comprehensive review of previous analysis of the bone flute from Divje babe I, but includes also new musicological research findings on the extraordinary technical capabilities of this oldest musical instrument. The concluding chapter presents a study of old manuscripts and printed sources, providing some interesting insights into the discovery of one of the most significant palaeontological sites in Slovenia - the cave of Mokriška jama. The monograph is dedicated to the anniversary of the prominent researcher of the Slovenian Palaeolithic - Ivan Turk. His work, main achievements and selected bibliography are briefly presented in the introductory chapter.

Book Synopsis UV Solid-State Light Emitters and Detectors by : Michael S. Shur
Download or read book UV Solid-State Light Emitters and Detectors written by Michael S. Shur and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-05-31 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared and visible light LEDs and photodetectors have found numerous applications and have become a truly enabling technology. The promise of solid state lighting has invigorated interest in white light LEDs. Ultraviolet LEDs and solar blind photodetectors represent the next frontier in solid state emitters and hold promise for many important applications in biology, medi cine, dentistry, solid state lighting, displays, dense data storage, and semi conductor manufacturing. One of the most important applications is in sys tems for the identification of hazardous biological agents. Compared to UV lamps, UV LEDs have lower power consumption, a longer life, compactness, and sharper spectral lines. UV LEDs can provide a variety of UV spectra and have shape and form factor flexibility and rugged ness. Using conventional phosphors, UV LEDs can generate white light with high CRI and high efficiency. If quantum cutter phosphors are developed, white light generation by UV LEDs might become even more efficient. Advances in semiconductor materials and in improved light extraction techniques led to the development of a new generation of efficient and pow erful visible high-brightness LEDs and we expect that similar improvements will be achieved in solid-state UV technology.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity and Conservation by : Jeyabalan Sangeetha
Download or read book Biodiversity and Conservation written by Jeyabalan Sangeetha and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an enlightening and pragmatic approach to preserving biological diversity by gathering a wide range of peer-reviewed scientific content from biodiversity researchers and conservators from around the world. It brings comprehensive knowledge and information on the present status of conservation of biological diversity including floral, faunal, and microbial diversity. A detailed account of recent trends in conservation and applications under changing climate conditions, focusing mainly on agriculturally and industrially important microbes and their sustainable utilization, is presented as well. Over the past five decades, extensive research work has been done on many aspects of biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization of biological resources. This book examines this crucial issue. Chapters discuss biodiversity concepts, benefits, and values for economic and sustainable development; explores applications and strategies for biodiversity preservation; and considers the role of biodiversity conservation in public awareness services and cultural significance. The volume also examines the process of evolution and the future of biodiversity in conjunction with climate change factors, with special reference to infectious diseases.
