Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellular proliferation, as a result of cell growth and cell division, is one of the most fundamental biological processes. Although there is a great deal which remains unclear, significant advances have been made in past decades in our understanding of the process and regulation of cell proliferation. There is considerable evidence that this understanding of different cells and cell proliferation behavior provides useful information that may be of major importance in disease control, drug discovery, biomaterial development and medical device improvement. This book studies and discusses recent developments in the field of cell proliferation including: the controlling factors for cell proliferation; changes occurring in the cells; therapeutic effects of the biological molecules to the cells; and analysis of cell proliferation based on the quantal concept. Furthermore, the effects that biomaterials and drugs have on cell proliferation are also reviewed in this book.

Book excerpt: In 1974 The National Institute on Aging established a somatic cell genetic resource for aging research at the Institute for Medical Research in Camden, New Jersey. Within this program there is a yearly workshop to promote theory and concept develop ment in aging research with the specific purpose of addressing the use of genetically marked cells for aging research and to stimulate interest in aging research by workers in a variety of disciplines. This monograph, The Regulation of Cell Proliferation and Differentiation, is the result of the first workshop held May 15-17, 1975. The concept of the workshop was to consider two main areas: First, a discussion of clinical syndromes expressing as a major manifestation excessive growth, deficient growth or failure to thrive; and second, to present work in cellular and molecular biology on a model system suitable for in vitro study of regulation of cell proliferation and diff2rentiation. The model selected for this was skeletal muscle. It has been widely accepted that normal somatic cells from individual human donors display limited replicative lifespans when cultivated in vitro (1,2). That such "clonal senescence" may be related to in vivo aging is suggested by observations relating the replicative lifespans of cultures to donor age (3-5,13) donor genotype (4-7) and donor's tissue of origin (5,8). A variety of theories have been developed to explain in vitro clonal senescence (9).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calcium Entry Channels in Non-Excitable Cells focuses on methods of investigating the structure and function of non-voltage gated calcium channels. Each chapter presents important discoveries in calcium entry pathways, specifically dealing with the molecular identification of store-operated calcium channels which were reviewed by earlier volumes in the Methods in Signal Transduction series. Crystallographic and pharmacological approaches to the study of calcium channels of epithelial cells are also discussed. Calcium ion is a messenger in most cell types. Whereas voltage gated calcium channels have been studied extensively, the non-voltage gated calcium entry channel genes have only been identified relatively recently. The book will fill this important niche.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlled expansion of cell populations is a fundamental feature of living organisms, being a finely-tuned balance between cell proliferation and cell death. This book aims to explain the molecular mechanisms that lie behind the multiplication and survival of eukaryotic cells. This encompasses both the normal regulation of cell populations in development or physiological adaptation and pathological mechanisms of cell cycle control in cancer. Principles of Cell Proliferation progressively introduces the function of growth factors, receptors, signal transduction pathways, gene expression and the conserved mechanisms of the cell cycle engine. This provides a context for understanding the mechanistic consequences of the genetic alterations in oncogenes and tumour suppresser genes which underlie tumour formation. The book should satisfy advanced level courses in Cell Proliferation, Cell Cycle Control and Cancer Biology for biologists, biochemists and medical students. The book comes at a time when the underlying molecular mechanisms of cancer are beginning to be unravelled. Ideal for advanced level courses in Cell Proliferation, Cell Cycle or Cancer Biology. An accessible account of a subject many students find complex.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of Animal Cell Proliferation, Volume I presents how animals regulate their proliferation activity and how cells become proliferatively autonomous resulting in malignant behavior. This book provides an understanding of mechanisms that control animal cell proliferation. Organized into five parts encompassing 17 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the efforts to elucidate he genetic alterations that lead normal cells to become cancer cells, which have been aided considerably by the investigation of acute retroviruses. This text then examines the factors involved in growth control. Other chapters describe in detail the biology and biochemistry of epidermal growth factor (EGF), which have been elucidated through the study of cultured human fibroblasts. This book discusses as well the protein kinases with specificity for tyrosine. The final chapter deals with regulation of initiation of eukaryotic protein synthesis by phosphorylation. This book is a valuable resource for scientists as well as cellular and molecular biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the dramatic growth in our knowledge of hormone action and the mechanisms of cell regulation, the need for an up-to-date broad-ranging survey of these processes has become pressing. In Principles of Molecular Regulation, P. Michael Conn and Anthony Means have successfully assembled a panel of leading investigators to provide an integrated review of the key areas-membrane receptor-initiated cell signaling and nuclear receptor-initiated gene regulation. Chosen for the excellence of their research as well as their demonstrated writing skills, these distinguished authors illuminate the molecular machinery underlying the regulatory processes of cells. In addition to their comprehensive review of the signaling mechanisms involving cell surface receptors, nuclear receptors, and ion channels, they detail the roles of calcium, lipids, cyclic AMP, protein kinases, and protein phosphatases. They also discuss the molecular regulation of cell proliferation and death, as well as the impact of new technologies on rational drug discovery. Capturing the excitement now present at this vibrant union of molecular biology, cell biology, and endocrinology, Principles of Molecular Regulation constitutes a major new resource for understanding the many and complex elements of biological regulation. Its up-to-date critical synthesis is certain to prove of high value to all basic and clinical investigators working with these processes today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the aim of providing an international forum for the communication of both the basic and clinical aspects of molecular and cellular biology of cancer, a NATO ASl was held in Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece, September 1-12, 1995. The principles as well as recent developments in tumor biology were discussed in depth, with emphasis on the regulation of the cell cycle, differentiation, programmed cell death (apoptosis) and genetics of cancer. This book constitutes the proceedings of that meeting. Specifically, the following areas were addressed: (a) enzymes and proteins (cyclins) that control the cell cycle, as well as the role of m as gene in meiosis and transformation; (b) the structural basis for specificity in protein-tyrosine kinase reactions; (c) the differentiation of normal as well as neoplastic cells with respect to molecular mechanism(s) by which chemical agents or growth factors trigger maturation; (d) phenotypic and genetic aspects of apoptosis; (e) the role of growth factors, like IGF-l, FGF, TN, IL-6, etc. , in cell cycle regulation, apoptosis (cell death) and senescence; (f) molecular mechanisms of transcriptional activation of globin genes and stability of mRNAs related to growth proteins and iron metabolism; (g) the cellular and molecular biology of bone marrow hemopoiesis; and (h) neurotrophic factors and the generation of cellular diversity in the central nervous system. It was obvious from the studies presented that neoplastic cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis in many cell types are regulated at several levels.

Book excerpt: Despite decades of work and financial support to explore the somatic mutation theory of carcinogenesis, we appear no nearer to explaining how cancer arises. This requires researchers to take stock and consider new hypotheses and alternative approaches to the study of control of cell proliferation, and cancer in particular. The Society of Cells is intended to encourage such a revaluation and proposes the adoption of new premises to explore these important subjects.
