Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From conference on the environmental effects of explosives and explosions; White Oak, Maryland, USA (30 May 1973). The potential mechanisms of biological damage to fish resulting from a nuclear-induced shock wave appear to involve mechanical damage from bottom acceleration and rockspall; the synergistic effect of compression to decompression producing the mechanical expansion of gas spaces within the organism; effects of cavitation; and possibly the alteration of blood constituents. The indirect effects of the shock wave should also be considered in a truly ecological approach. Loss of fish or other marine organisms may reduce food resources for other species and place an unusual stress upon the community's food web and increased predation created by the influx of a formerly minor constituent may also be a real consideration. The determinants of biological damage involve the anatomical morphology, the ecological characteristics of the various members of the fish community, and the physical characteristics of the environment as produced by the introduced shock wave. Book excerpt: From conference on the environmental effects of explosives and explosions; White Oak, Maryland, USA (30 May 1973). The biological effects of the Longshot, Milrow, and Cannikin underground nuclear tests at Amchitka lsland, Alaska, on marine mammals, fishes, and birds are summarized. The biological effects observed were related to the water-borne shock waves produced by the explosions. (CH).

Book Synopsis ASA S3/SC1.4 TR-2014 Sound Exposure Guidelines for Fishes and Sea Turtles: A Technical Report prepared by ANSI-Accredited Standards Committee S3/SC1 and registered with ANSI by : Arthur N. Popper
Download or read book ASA S3/SC1.4 TR-2014 Sound Exposure Guidelines for Fishes and Sea Turtles: A Technical Report prepared by ANSI-Accredited Standards Committee S3/SC1 and registered with ANSI written by Arthur N. Popper and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Technical Report presents the outcome of a Working Group that was established to determine broadly applicable sound exposure guidelines for fishes and sea turtles. After consideration of the diversity of fish and sea turtles, guidelines were developed for broad groups of animals, defined by the way they detect sound. Different sound sources were considered in terms of their acoustic characteristics and appropriate metrics defined for measurement of the received levels. The resultant sound exposure guidelines are presented in a set of tables. In some cases numerical guidelines are provided, expressed in appropriate metrics. When there were insufficient data to support numerical values, the relative likelihood of effects occurring was evaluated, although the actual likelihood of effects depends on the received level. These sound exposure guidelines, which are based on the best scientific information at the time of writing, should be treated as interim. The expectation is that with more research the guidelines can be refined and more cells in the tables completed. Recommendations are put forward defining the research requirements of highest priority for extending these interim exposure guidelines.

Book Synopsis The Effects of Seismic Sounds on Marine Organisms by : Thomas L. Linton
Download or read book The Effects of Seismic Sounds on Marine Organisms written by Thomas L. Linton and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature search has been conducted of experiments dealing with seismic sound sources and their effects on aquatic marine organisms. Researchers report that high-velocity explosives burn rapidly and produce a very fast buildup in pressure which kills fishes. High-velocity explosives that produce a peak pressure of 40 psi kill some fish. Charges as small as 1 pound have been shown to damage fish. The degree of lethality is directly related to charge size and distance from detonation site. Organisms with air bladders, eggs, larvae and juvenile forms were found to be the most susceptible to damage. Low-velocity explosives generate a moderate pressure buildup and relatively low peak pressure, producing relatively no lethal effects to aquatic organisms. Studies have shown that black power charges as large as 1100 pounds producing peak pressures much higher than 70 psi, will not harm fish. Seismic air guns have a moderate pressure rise-time similar to that produced by low-velocity explosives. Although few studies have been conducted with air guns, they appear to have little adverse effect upon aquatic organisms.

Book excerpt: Plans for the Long Term Upper Ocean Study evolved over several years. As the plans became more definite a two year period was devoted to engineering tests at the LOTUS site (34°N, 70°W). Many aspects of the proposed plans were implemented during this period in order to evaluate the performance of the equipment and instrumentation. This report presents a summary of the planning and testing periods up to but not including the first science deployments in May 1982. Historical data collected at the LOTUS site prior to the engineering tests and the data collected as part of the engineering tests are presented.

Book excerpt: From arid deserts to icy poles, outer space to the depths of the sea, this exciting new work studies the remarkable life forms that have made these inhospitable environments their home. Covering not only micro-organisms, but also higher plants and animals such as worms, fish and polar plants, this book details the ecological, biological and biogeochemical challenges these organisms face and unifying themes between environments. Equally useful for the expert, student and casual scientific reader, this book also explores the impact of climate change, rapid seasonal changes and pollution on these extraordinary creatures.
