Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The part of this book covering pathogensis and modes of action begins with a chapter on the physicochemical properties of asbestos fibers and a chapter on the deposition and retention of fibers within the lung and their clearance. Some of the effects of asbestos can be reproduced in animal experiments, and the book includes a full review of the results from animal studies using various routes of administration of fibers. It is also generally accepted that the effects of fibers on pulmonary macrophages is central to all fiber-induced pathology, and the release of macrophage-associated inflammatory and immunological mediatros is dealt with in a further chapter. Examination of pathogenicity by cell culture is described, and areas covered include the role of free radicals and cellular mechanisms in producing genetic damage. The fiber-induced activation of some second messenger pathways is also described, with consideration of whether or not similar cellular mechanisms are responsible for all the clinical conditions associated with fiber exposure. Knowledge of the mechanisms involved should be valuable in the development of safe fibers and the prevention of human exposure to new materials that are dangerous as asbestos. The final chapters expound and resolve the conflicts in evidence, discuss the importance of fibers for human well-being and the possible health impact on nonmineral alternatives, and evaluate risks to the public

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition in 1948, Patty’s Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology has become a flagship publication for Wiley. In the course of its nearly six decades in print, it has evolved into a standard reference for the fields of occupational health and toxicology. The volumes on Industrial Hygiene are cornerstone reference works for chemists, engineers, toxicologists, and occupational safety personnel. Since the 5th edition was published, the field of IH has changed with personnel often working for multinational firms, self-employed, at small consulting firms. Their environment has changed and expanded, and thus also the types of information and resources required have changed. The traditional areas of interest to occupational health and safety professionals include anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of potential hazards. In addition to these, the 6th edition provides information and reliable resources to prepare for natural disasters, exposures to biological agents and potential acts of terrorism.

Book excerpt: Presented here are recent data on the mechanisms of action of different dusts and fibres of industrial interest. Emphasis is placed on the use of cell and organ culture and lavage cell populations obtained from man and laboratory animals to elucidate cellular and molecular events occurring after their interaction with fibrous and non-fibrous particulates including metal compounds. In four sections, the volume provides research findings in the following areas: - Cellular and Metabolic Changes Caused by Mineral Dusts - Molecular Changes and DNA Alterations Produced by Mineral Dusts - In Vivo Dust-Related Pathological Processes. Correlations Between in Vitro and in Vivo Data - Physico-Chemical Properties of Minerals in Relation to Their Biological Effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large number of chemical compunds are constantly being introduced and produced, both to assist and ease modern human life. Among these chemicals, industrial compounds represent a particular fraction of chemicals which are not intended for use in biological systems, but to which humans may be accidently exposed, whether in the workplace, by product application, or via the environment. Industrial chemicals, as opposed to pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, are in many cases subjected only to a very basic examination of handling safety, and may lack further toxicity testing. This implies that essentially nothing is known about their bioavailability, metabolism, excretion and toxicological properties, unless problems arise.; Covering the investigation of industrial chemicals, this book focuses on their individual structure, biological fate, potential toxicity to mammals and the molecular mechanisms possibly underlying their adverse effects by highlighting the use and significance of experimental toxicology. Special emphasis is placed on mechanistic aspects in the safety assessment of industrial compounds, in addition to current regulatory and legal considerations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Editors are sorry that the production of this volume was delayed by the ill health of one of them and we hope that this does not detract from the value of the con tents. For once this delay is not the fault of any of the authors only the editors are to blame. Many of the workers in the field of fibre toxicology became convinced by the middle 1980's that the worst of the furore over asbestos was over although we were left with an intriguing problem - how does asbestos cause disease? It was expected that the future impact of fibres on human health would be very small since asbestos exposure would be controlled and there was little chance that man-made fibres would prove haz ardous. These man-made fibres are much thicker than asbestos and, in most cases, they are less durable in the body. Both of these properties are believed to make them much less likely to cause disease. However many of us had fallen into the habit of calling these materials "asbestos substitutes" and thus they have acquired a little of the notoriety at tached to the natural fibrous minerals. Very few of these man-made fibres are actually used as replacements for asbestos. Asbestos was not suitable for the uses to which the insulation wools are usually put and the ceramic fibres are replacements for fire brick not asbestos which is destroyed at the temperatures at which these materials are used.

Book excerpt: Inhaled Particles VI contains the proceedings of an international symposium and workshop on lung dosimetry, organized by the British Occupational Hygiene Society in cooperation with the Commission of the European Communities and held at Cambridge on September 2-6, 1985. The symposium presents results of research on the entry, destiny, and effects of respired particles, with emphasis on mechanisms and dose-response relationships. This book contains, in three separate parts, 84 papers from the symposium, 34 workshop papers, and 20 poster presentations. Parts 1 and 2 are further divided into sections. Section 1 presents several papers concerning the influence of breathing pattern and activity on regional deposition of inhaled particles. Section 2 shows comparative studies of aerosol deposition in experimental animals and humans. Subsequent sections explore the mineral content of lungs to differing exposures; biological effects of dusts; hazard parameters; dust measurement; exposure of workers to vermiculite and attapulgite; effects of dust exposure in the coal mining industry; and effects of silica dust exposure. Other topics of significance include toxicity of artificial mineral fibers and utility of magnetopneumography as a non-invasive investigational test.

Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), a nonprofit, public foundation, was established in 1978 to advance the sciences of nutrition, toxicology, and food safety. ILSI promotes the resolution of health and safety issues in these areas by sponsoring research, conferences, publications, and educational programs. Through ILSI's programs, scientists from government, academia, and industry unite their efforts to resolve issues of critical importance to the public. As part of its commitment to understanding and resolving health and safety issues, ILSI is pleased to sponsor this series of monographs that consolidates new scientific knowledge, defines research needs, and provides a background for the effective application of scientific advances in toxicology and food safety.
