Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject area embraced by the term "biological control" in its classical sense is very broad indeed. The term itself was apparently first used in 1919 by the late Harry S. Smith, and was then used specifically in reference to the suppression of insect populations by the actions of their indigenous or introduced natural enemies. The California school of biological control specialists who followed in Smith's footsteps have traditionally differentiated "natural" biological control (by indigenous natural enemies) and "applied" biological control (by man-introduced natural enemies). Subsequently, the philosophy broadened beyond the original narrow concern with population suppression of insects (and especially pest insects), to embrace directed activities against mites or other arthropod pests, various invertebrate and vertebrate pests, weeds, and organisms producing disease in humans or their domestic animals and plants. The techniques used in these activities also multiplied beyond the original concern with natural enemies. The subjects area discussed in this book is, at the same time, broader and more restricted than that covered in other books on "biological control. " On the one hand, the treatment here is restrictive in that, with rare exception, we have limited ourselves to dealing only with ideas and examples involving the suppression of insect pests through human activity or intervention in the environment.

Book excerpt: Three experiments were designed to evaluating the effects of Ovavesicula popilliae, a species-specific microsporidian pathogen, on Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) in Michigan. In the first experiment prevalence of O. popilliae, in Michigan was determined by collecting host larvae and adults at 47 golf courses or rest areas in 2018 and 2019. Larvae and adults were dissected and assessed for O. popilliae infection. Infection and scarab species data from nine of the golf courses visited in 2018 was compared to similar data from the same nine golf courses from 1999. The survey of golf courses and highway rest areas in Michigan documented a significant decline of Japanese beetle in the 20 year-period since the last survey, and the slow spread of Ovavesicula popilliae. At introduction sites from the last 12 years O. popilliae established and persisted at epizootic levels. In the second experiment survival of Ovavesiucla popilliae-infected larvae was compared with survival of healthy larvae during their overwintering period, from October to May, in two consecutive years of experiments. Ovavesicula popilliae infection of larvae at the beginning of the experiment (34.0 and 26.9%, in October 2017 and October 2018, respectively) and soil cores from a site where the pathogen was active had a significant impact on the survival of infected larvae (90-100% reduction). In the third experiment healthy Japanese beetle larvae were inoculated by placing them in soil cores collected from a site where O. popilliae had established and became epizootic. Infection and survival of inoculated larvae was compared with the same for healthy Japanese beetle larvae from October to May. There was no difference in percent infection of inoculated larvae (5.0 %) and control larvae (1.8%). This may be because the field plots for this study were placed directly over the top of field plots from the previous year where infected larvae were put into turf and soil cores.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese beetles are a relatively new pest to Arkansas. During my Ph.D. research I investigated the pathogens and environmental factors influencing Japanese beetle populations in the state. The prevalence of various pathogens and parasitoids attacking Popillia japonica were recorded annually from wild populations. Of specific interest was the microsporidian pathogen Ovavesicula popilliae, which I introduced as a biological control agent in the state. Details of the relationship between this pathogen and the Japanese beetle were investigated, including dose response, host range, and spore production. Additionally, annual abundance of the beetle in the region was recorded and tracked over the course of 4 years using soil sampling for larvae and pheromone traps for adults. Outdoor and indoor rearing methods were developed, and the density of these populations were recorded and compared to wild populations and temperature data, allowing us to model climate impact on the beetle. Results from these studies showed that, naturally occurring pathogens, such as Stictospora villani, Ovavesicula popilliae and Adelina sp., and parasitoids appeared to have minimal influence on the beetle populations in this region. In the case of O. popilliae, low levels of the pathogen appeared in the area naturally. This pathogen also has a narrow physiological host range outside of the Japanese beetle, primarily in other scarab larvae. O. popilliae also appears to primarily infect Japanese beetle larvae and was incapable of infecting adult beetles. Infected larvae which survived to adulthood remained infected, with the adults capable of producing on average 25 million spores. In comparison, high summer temperatures and lack of rain reduced late summer populations of larvae. In 2010, O. popilliae was released at four locations in Northwest Arkansas. In 2011 it was detected at one of those locations. A second introduction of O. popilliae was made in 2012. The results from this classical biological control effort involving the release of O. popilliae require further monitoring to confirm establishment. This information can be used to help establish long term control of this new pest in the Southern United States. This information will be of use to fruit growers, horticulturalists, turf managers, nursery operators, and homeowners.

It has a long history of use as a classical biological control agent in the USA and more recently in Europe. This beetle has been effective at controlling pest insects in a variety of crop systems but it poses unacceptable risks by impacting on non-target species as both an intraguild predator and competitor. Written by renowned scientists, this book is a synthesis of recent research on H. axyridis and provides informative insights into current perspectives and future directions. Biological control is an essential component of sustainable agriculture but the distinction between a successful biological control agent and an invasive species can be narrow. We hope that lessons can be learnt from H. axyridis.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Biology - Ecology, grade: 1,0, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, language: English, abstract: This paper examines the historical and contemporary approaches to controlling insect pests in agriculture, with a primary focus on biological control methods. It delves into the three main strategies of biological control—importation, augmentation, and conservation—that utilize natural enemies to regulate insect pest populations. The context of this exploration is set against the backdrop of the challenges posed by insect-borne damage in crops, ranging from aesthetic harm to the transmission of plant diseases and significant crop consumption. The paper highlights the evolution from natural remedies to synthetic insecticides and the subsequent reevaluation of pest control practices, leading to the establishment of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The advantages of biological control, particularly in wooded environments, are underscored, and the three strategies are discussed in the context of their roles in pest management. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of sustainable and environmentally friendly pest control methods, encouraging a shift towards biological sources in agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as examining successful biological control programmes this book analyses why the majority of attempts fail. Off-target and other negative effects of biological control are also dealt with. Chapters contributed by leading international researchers and practitioners in all areas of biological control afford the book a breadth of coverage and depth of analysis not possible with a single author volume. Combined with the use of other experts to review chapters and editorial oversight to ensure thematic integrity of the volume, this book provides the most authoritative analysis of biological control published. Key aspects addressed include how success may be measured, how successful biological control has been to date and how may it be made more successful in the future. With extensive use of contemporary examples, photographs, figures and tables this book will be invaluable to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as being a `must' for all involved in making biological control successful.
