Book excerpt: Hormonal Proteins and Peptides: Growth Factors, Volume XII focuses on the chemistry and biology of nerve growth factor (NGF), insulin-like growth factors/somatomedins/multiplication-stimulating activity (IGFs/SMs/MSA), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and skeletal growth factor (SGF). This book discusses the development of growth factors in cell proliferation, differentiation, and malignancy. Organized into eight chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the findings on the structural and biological properties of NGF. This text then discusses the identical amino acid sequences of IFG-I and SM-c and explains as well the similarities in the structure of IFG-II and MSA. Other chapters present a thorough discussion of human PDGF, with emphasis on the link between the PDGF and the simian sarcoma virus gene product. This book discusses as well the mechanism of action of the pituitary and brain FGF. The final chapter deals with the discovery, isolation, and characterization of the biological activities of epidermal growth factor (EGF). This book is a valuable resource for biochemists, endocrinologists, and physicians.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Cellular and Molecular Control of Direct Cell Interactions in Developing System" has been attended by 15 invited main lecturers and 60 participants. According to its purpose senior scientists, postdoctoral trainees and graduate students working in areas like biology, biochemistry, electrophysiology, medicine etc . . . could discuss their common interest in the various structural, ultrastructural, molecular and functional aspects of cell interactions in developing in vivo and in vitro systems. Whereas the topics of the first week have been mostly concerned with the general aspects of cell interactions in embryogenesis (section I and II of this book), the second week has been mainly devoted to the structures and functions of the direct cell contact sites at the membrane level as gap junctions, including electrophysiological aspects, dye coupling and selective cell-cooperation in some model systems as the neuro-muscular junctions (section III-V of this book). A multidisciplinary and stepwise approach, from initial cell contacts in early embryogenesis up to well defined selective cell cooperation, appeared to be an efficient means to provide answers to the question of how cells control, in a dynamic system as given in a differentiating embryo, their multiple temporary and permanent interactions so necessary for ordered cell positioning, cell linking and well established cell-to-cell communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variety of metabolic processes are known to be intimately involved in the maintenance of cellular structure and function. It has also become clear that metabolic events involved in the synthesis and hydrolysis of ATP as well as for the synthesis of proteins and phospholipids are essential for cellular health. The regulation of cell function is generally achieved through participation of a wide variety of hormones and different signal transduction mechanisms for the activation/deactivation of some specific metabolic processes. In this regard cyclic AMP and calcium seem to play a crucial role. Various hormones are also known to affect the genetic machinery of all the cell; however, the exact signals for genetic control of cellular function are not well defined. In particular, the sequence of events concerned with remodelling of different types of cells under various pathological situations is poorly understood. In this book we have therefore dealt with some of these issues from biochemical, molecular biological, physiological, and pharmacological viewpoints. Special emphasis has been laid on understanding heart function and metabolism in health and disease in general, and cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, and ischemic heart disease in particular. It is hoped that this multidisciplinary information will be of value to basic scientists and clinical investigators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular and Cellular Biophysics provides advanced undergraduate and graduate students with a foundation in the basic concepts of biophysics. Students who have taken physical chemistry and calculus courses will find this book an accessible and valuable aid in learning how these concepts can be used in biological research. The text provides a rigorous treatment of the fundamental theories in biophysics and illustrates their application with examples. Conformational transitions of proteins are studied first using thermodynamics, and subsequently with kinetics. Allosteric theory is developed as the synthesis of conformational transitions and association reactions. Basic ideas of thermodynamics and kinetics are applied to topics such as protein folding, enzyme catalysis and ion channel permeation. These concepts are then used as the building blocks in a treatment of membrane excitability. Through these examples, students will gain an understanding of the general importance and broad applicability of biophysical principles to biological problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dictionaries are didactic books used as consultation instruments for self-teaching. They are composed by an ordered set of linguistic units which reflects a double structure, the macrostructure which correspond to the word list and the microstructure that refers to the contents of each lemma. The great value of dictionaries nests in the fact that they establish a standard nomenclature and prevent in that way the appearance of new useless synonyms. This dictionary contains a total of about 27.500 main English entries, and over of 130.000 translations that should normally sufficiently cover all fields of life sciences. The basic criteria used to accept a word a part of the dictionary during the development period in order of importance were usage, up-to-dateness, specificity, simplicity and conceptual relationships. The dictionary meets the standards of higher education and covers all main fields of life sciences by setting its primary focus on the vastly developing fields of cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, developmental biology, microbiology, genetics and also the fields of human anatomy, histology, pathology, physiology, zoology and botany. The fields of ecology, paleontology, systematics, evolution, biostatistics, plant physiology, plant anatomy, plant histology, biometry and lab techniques have been sufficiently covered but in a more general manner. The latest Latin international anatomical terminology "Terminologia Anatomica" or "TA" has been fully incorporated and all anatomical entries have been given their international Latin TA synonym. This dictionary will be a valuable and helpful tool for all scientists, teachers, students and generally all those that work within the fields of life sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised second edition of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Viruses leads students on an exploration of viruses by supporting engaging and interactive learning. All the major classes of viruses are covered, with separate chapters for their replication and expression strategies, and chapters for mechanisms such as attachment that are independent of the virus genome type. Specific cases drawn from primary literature foster student engagement. End-of-chapter questions focus on analysis and interpretation with answers being given at the back of the book. Examples come from the most-studied and medically important viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, HIV, and influenza. Plant viruses and bacteriophages are also included. There are chapters on the overall effect of viral infection on the host cell. Coverage of the immune system is focused on the interplay between host defenses and viruses, with a separate chapter on medical applications such as antiviral drugs and vaccine development. The final chapter is on virus diversity and evolution, incorporating contemporary insights from metagenomic research. The second edition has updated suggestions for primary literature to discuss along with each chapter. New to this second edition, a supplementary chapter, freely available for download, looks at how virology intersects with public health, and uses the COVID-19 pandemic as a notable example. Key Features Readable but rigorous coverage of the molecular and cellular biology of viruses Molecular mechanisms of all major groups, including plant viruses and bacteriophages, illustrated by example Host-pathogen interactions at the cellular and molecular level emphasized throughout Medical implications and consequences included Quality illustrations available to instructors New to this second edition, interactive quiz questions hosted online
