Henry Aaron Stern, D.D: For More Than Forty Years a Missionary Amongst the Jews: Containing an Account of His Labours and Travels in Mesopotamia, Persia, Arabia, Turkey, Abyssinia, and England I have accepted the honourable and responsible office of preparing the Biography of Henry Aaron Stern, without hesitation, not only as "a labour of love," but also, as a tribute of affection to the memory of a cherished friend and brother in the Lord, and a distinguished servant of God. In the compilation of this Biography, the materials which I have had at my disposal have been more than abundant, and the difficulty proportionate, in culling from fields, so rich in their resources, that which might be most suitably and usefully employed. My desire has been, that the editorial part of the narrative should entirely subserve the great aim of setting forth my friend's labours and experiences in his own words so that it might be truly said that "he being dead yet speaketh." To the great Head of the Church I commit this work, in the confident hope that it will serve to promote His glory; and with the prayer, that every reader may be enabled by Divine grace, to follow Henry Aaron Stern, as he followed Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strangers in Yemen is a study of travel to Yemen in the nineteenth century by Jews, Christians and Muslims. The travelers include a missionary, artist, scientist, rabbi, merchant, adventurer and soldier. The focus is on the encounter between people of different cultures, and the chapters analyze the travelers’ accounts to elucidate how strangers and locals perceived each other, and how the experiences shaped their perceptions of themselves. Cultural encounter is among the most important challenges of our time, a time of global migration and instant communication. Today, as in the past, history provides a valuable tool for illuminating the human experience, and this scholarly work stimulates us to contemplate the challenge of cultural encounter, for it affects us all.

Book excerpt: The definitive history of conversion and assimilation of Jews in Europe and America from the eighteenth century to the present Between the French Revolution and World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jews left the Jewish fold—by becoming Christians or, in liberal states, by intermarrying. Telling the stories of both famous and obscure individuals, Leaving the Jewish Fold explores the nature of this drift and defection from Judaism in Europe and America from the eighteenth century to today. Arguing that religious conviction was rarely a motive for Jews who became Christians, Todd Endelman shows that those who severed their Jewish ties were driven above all by pragmatic concerns—especially the desire to escape the stigma of Jewishness and its social, occupational, and emotional burdens. Through a detailed and colorful narrative, Endelman considers the social settings, national contexts, and historical circumstances that encouraged Jews to abandon Judaism, and factors that worked to the opposite effect. Demonstrating that anti-Jewish prejudice weighed more heavily on the Jews of Germany and Austria than those living in France and other liberal states as early as the first half of the nineteenth century, he reexamines how Germany's political and social development deviated from other European states. Endelman also reveals that liberal societies such as Great Britain and the United States, which tolerated Jewish integration, promoted radical assimilation and the dissolution of Jewish ties as often as hostile, illiberal societies such as Germany and Poland. Bringing together extensive research across several languages, Leaving the Jewish Fold will be the essential work on conversion and assimilation in modern Jewish history for years to come.
