Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Circa 3230 BCE! Dwapar Yug, the end of the Third Age after Satya Yug and Treta Yug, described in the Purans! It was midnight on Ashtami Tithi in the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapad, corresponding to August of the Gregorian calendar. After six of the darkest nights in seven years when all of his six brothers were killed soon after their birth, there came another such night. Entire Mathura mourned with winds howling and dusk giving way to an appalling rainy night. Nature seemed to enlighten one and all about the birth of the eighth child specified in the prophecy. And a God was born on earth as a mortal. Because the rising evil had to be suppressed! He was Krishn. The seventh fetus was transferred to its step-mother’s womb at three months. This fetus, after completion of the gestation period, was born as the elder brother of the God. The incarnation of Sheshnag, the king of all serpents and serpent deities, became the brother of the incarnation of Vishnu! Fourteen years of twists and turns, one after another, in the life of Krishn! Who were his friends? What games did he play? How did he grow up? When did he start playing the flute? Who was his teacher? How did he become a hero by the time he became a teenager? Did he commandeer an army in the battlefield at fourteen? Who was Radha? Who was she married to? Krishn awaits you…"

Kasturi, author of this series, Sathyam Sivam Sundaram. In this series, which is divided into four parts, the author brings out the life history of the Divine Avatar from His birth in 1926 to 1979. Prof. Kasturi, who had the extreme fortune of being close to Baba, shares His mahimas and leelas with the readers. The first Part of this book was placed in the hands of the readers in 1961. The need for the revised and enlarged edition was felt by the publisher for more comfortable reading, especially by the elderly readers. As a result, these Volumes are brought out in larger format, with computerised typesetting, using larger typeface, better line spacing, and with a number of photographs. With these changes, it is hoped that all spiritual seekers will benefit and enjoy reading these series. Convener, Sri Sathya Sai Books & Publications Trust, Prasanthi Nilayam, June, 2001

Book excerpt: Mirabai, an iconic sixteenth-century Indian poet-saint, is renowned for her unwavering love of God, her disregard for social hierarchies and gendered notions of honor and shame, and her challenge to familial, feudal, and religious authorities. Defying attempts to constrain and even kill her, she could not be silenced. Though verifiable facts regarding her life are few, her fame spread across social, linguistic, and religious boundaries, and stories about her multiplied across the subcontinent and the centuries. In Mirabai, Nancy M. Martin traces the story of this immensely popular Indian saint from the earliest manuscript references to her through colonial and nationalist developments to scholarly and popular portrayals in the decades leading up to Indian independence. This book examines Mirabai's place as both insider and outsider to the developing strands of devotional Hinduism and her role in contested terrain of debates around the education and independence of women and the crafting of Indian and Hindu identities. Mirabai offers a comprehensive and multi-layered portrait of this remarkable and still controversial woman, who continues to be a source of inspiration and catalyst for self-actualization for spiritual seekers, artists, activists, and so many others in India and around the world today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few decades some lengthy studies have been devoted to Dadu and the Dadupanth. When writing a biography of Dadu, authors often give a list of sources without apparently having consulted the works they mention, with the result that most literature on the subject now available is to a great extent merely the result of copying from earlier writers. Often, a mass of details about Dadu is given without a clear distinction being made between early documents and later information arising from tradition. In most cases the composition of an original work was followed by a wave of sectarian historians who indulged in laudatory embellishments to the point of the most fanciful miracle mongering. A critical edition of the Hindi Biography of Dadu, by Jan Gopal was urgently needed because it shows that within one generation after its redaction the original version was greatly expanded and delicate issues in it were `explained`. Both versions are given here, with an English translation and commentary.
