In this remarkable treatise, Radhakrishnan explores aspects of the modern intellectual debate on science vis-a-vis religion and the vain attempts to find a substitute for religion. He discusses, drawing upon the traditions of East and West, the nature and validity of religious experience. Finally, he creates a fine vision of mans evolution and the emergence of higher values. Book excerpt: As we aspire for rising economic prosperity and a strong and confident India, this book forcefully reminds us of the values that make for a truly sustainable society, at the heart of which is the family. For it is not economic growth or military strength alone that will make India strong. Sustainable success comes from values, and these can sustain a society and a nation even in times of hardship. The book expresses an ideal by which Indian society may prosper and speaks of how spirituality can help create a noble nation and a better world. It provides a valuable counterpoint to the modern-day emphasis on consumerism and the philosophy of more is better, highlighting the sanctity of the natural world and its great power to evoke human creativity and love. Writing on this crucial subject are two iconic Indians. Together, Acharya Mahapragya and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam-- one a Jain muni revered as a saint, the other a visionary, a distinguished scientist and a former President of India-- bring their vast experience to bear on this important subject. As the authors put it, it's only a united and happy family that will lead to a strong nation, one that can be a true fulfilment of 5,000 years of India's civilization. The book takes up the difficult and pressing task of setting a new agenda in a time of radical social change. It shows us the path we need to follow to take India to its rightful place as a great nation.

Book excerpt: The twenty stimulating and original essays in this volume provide a comprehensive analysis of the main strands of modern Indian political thought. The thinkers dicussed are Rammohun Roy, Dayananda Saraswati, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay, Ranade, Phule, Tilak, B R Ambedkar, Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, M N Roy, Jawaharlal Nehru and Gandhi. Separate essays are devoted to the Hindu and Muslim traditions in Indian political thought, Hindu nationalism, and the ideologies of the Communist and Sarvodaya movements. A significant feature of these essays is that they study each thinker or movement in the relevant socio-historical context as also examine the consequences and impact of modern Indian political theories, These are analysed from a world-hostorical and, to some extent, a political economy perspective. The essays in this collection highlight two major streams in modern Indian political thought--one which favoured the adoption or adaptation of western political traditions and the other which sought to evolve indigenous or alternative formulations. The overall conclusion that emerges from this volume is that in order to formulate an adequate political philosophy for the modern age, both the western and Indian traditions have to be taken into account. In this context, some of the essays highlight the contemporary global relevance of Gandhi's socio-political ideas. This book is a major contribution to modern political philosophy. It will be of great value to students and teacher of political science.

During this time, he and his comrades fought one of the most celebrated Court Battles in the annals of national liberation struggles, and used the court as a vehicle for the propagation of their revolutionary message. They also struggled against the inhuman conditions in the Colonial jail, and faced torture and pain. Their heroism made them icons and figures of Inspiration for generations to come. All this is well-known. What is not so well-known is that Bhagat Singh wrote four Books in jail. Although they were smuggled out, they were destroyed and are lost forever. What survived was a Notebook that the Young martyr kept in jail, full of notes and jottings from what he was reading. In the year of his Birth centenary, LeftWord is proud to present his Notebook in an elegant edition. This Edition has been checked against the copy preserved in the National Archives of India. The Notebook is richly annotated by Bhupender Hooja; and the annotations have been revised and updated for this edition. Also included are the most important Texts that Bhagat Singh wrote in jail, Chaman Lal's lucid introduction, the New York Daily Worker's reports and Periyar's editorial on the hanging" -- Provided by publisher.
