Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Friends' Library, Vol. 6: Comprising Journals, Doctrinal Treatises, and Other Writings of Members of the Religious Society of Friends Ivery well Iemember the work of God upon my soul, when I was about ten years of age; and particularly at a certain time when I had been rebelling against God and my parents, in vanity and lightness and as I had offended both, so I was corrected by both: for I had not only felt the anger of my parents, but the Lord frowned upon me, insomuch, that I trem bled exceedingly, and was as though I heard a voice say to me, What will become Of thee this night, if I Should take thy life from thee? At which I was amazed, and in great fear. Then I covenanted with God, that if he would be pleased to spare my life, for I thought God would have taken it from me that very mo ment, I would be more sober, and mind his fear more than I had done before. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Biographies of Some Members of the Society of Friends: Showing Their Early Religious Exercises, and Experience in the Work of Regeneration In preparing this compilation, the writer has especially had in view those persons, whose minds have been awakened to a sense of their sinful condition, and in whom living desires have been raised for admission into the Kingdom of Heaven. In reading the accounts which follow, these may see, that others, who have gone before them, by turning in all sincerity to that Grace which convinced them of their sin, and by closely following its guidance; were enabled to repent of and forsake their sins; and to obtain true faith in Christ, and a sense of union and acceptance with Him. As such visited ones patiently endure the judgments of the Lord, they will find them to produce the peaceable fruits of righteousness; and thus the work of redemption and purification will go forward in them. Though the narratives which follow all relate to members of the Society of Friends, yet it is not intended thereby to convey the impression that persons of other religious persuasions do not partake in the same blessed experiences. The writer fully believes, that the work of religion is substantially the same in the hearts of all who submit to it; and he unhesitatingly accepts the declaration of the Apostle Peter, "In every nation, he that feareth [God] and worketh righteousness, is accepted with Him." Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Religious Society of Friends, From Its Rise to the Year 1828, Vol. 2 of 4 Soon after the king's return, a number of queries were addressed to the people called Quakers, with a request that their answer should be directed thus: Tradite hanc amico Regis, that is, Deliver. This to the king's friend. This paper was supposed to be written by an eminent royalist, and probably by a member of the king's council. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of the Rise of the Religious Society of Friends: Their Doctrines and Discipline Two centuries have passed away since the first members of the Society of Friends believed themselves called upon to bear a conspicuous testimony by deed as well as word to the purity and spirituality of the Christian religion. Reverently accepting the doctrines of Christ and His apostles in their comprehensive fulness as recorded in the New Testament, they felt that they could not rest in a mere profession even of these blessed truths. Their souls longed for the possession of the substance, even reconciliation with the Father, and communion with Him by His own Spirit through the one living Saviour, Advocate, and Intercessor for us, Christ Jesus. That which they sought was not to be found in outward observances. Their spiritual necessities required spiritual refreshments. The ancient sacrifices and ceremonies under the Law, though expressly instituted by Divine authority, were given but for a season, to be fulfilled and ended by Christ. The new covenant of life and salvation was not in these. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Friends of a Half Century: Fifty Memorials With Portraits of Members of the Society of Friends The Society of Friends possesses a rich inheritance in its wealth at material for interesting and instructive biography, which con tinnes to accumulate as generation follows generation. The aim of this Work is to utilize some of this material, and, by placing a sun picture side by side with a word picture, to give to its readers the opportunity of looking upon the features, and some times the figures of those whose lives and characters are briefly depicted in the accompanying sketches - a combination which may help many minds more completely to realize both fact and teaching. We have confined ourselves to the long roll of those who have departed from amongst us during the fifty years, 1840-1890, and have limited the number of these to fifty. In the selection we have by no means attempted to include all who might be re garded as most worthy of a place in it but rather have aimed at a series which might pretty widely illustrate the variety in the better life of the Society.
