Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioenergetics is the study of balance between energy supply and energy expenditure and requires an examination of physiological processes through which energy is transformed in living organisms. Studies on the flow and allocation of energy in biological systems often have, as their ultimate goal, the construction of a budget describing the partitioning of energy within an individual or population. Such budgets are then used to make inference about physiology or ecology in particular explaining why an organism or population does what it is observed to do assuming that energy allocation is the overriding concern. Bioenergetic modelling is an alternative method for estimating feeding rates in a natural population. These models quantify the relationship between feeding rates and growth relative to temperature, body size and activity. Bioenergetic models have been applied to address ecological questions in a wide variety of taxa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) are highly prized as sports fish and increasingly as high-value food fish. The farming of largemouth bass is becoming increasingly important and international as the procedures and management for successful culture are being refined. Largemouth bass aquaculture is now widespread across the USA and increasingly in other countries worldwide: the largemouth bass aquaculture industry in China is particularly strong. Largemouth Bass Aquaculture provides comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the farming of largemouth bass, with chapters encompassing all major areas of importance, including: their history, production, environment requirements, reproduction, culture methods, diseases and major markets. Many of the world experts in the field have contributed chapters to this landmark publication and the editors are very well-known and respected worldwide. The book is fully international in scope, drawing information from all major countries where largemouth bass are farmed. Largemouth Bass Aquaculture is an important resource for those working in aquaculture, including fish farm operatives and managers, veterinarians and fish health managers, inspectors and consultants. Personnel within companies supplying the aquaculture industry with feed, technical equipment and pharmaceuticals will find a wealth of useful information within this book. Libraries in all universities and establishments teaching and researching aquaculture, fish biology, ichthyology, fisheries, aquatic sciences and veterinary studies should have copies of this comprehensive book on their shelves. 5m Books

Book excerpt: The results of analyses designed to develop model fishery compartments and associated fish population rate coefficients on a regional basis for use in reservoir ecosystem modeling are presented. Emphasis is directed toward development of regional rate coefficients for the United States corresponding to major geographical drainage areas. Fishery data will be incorporated in the reservoir ecosystem model currently being developed by personnel of the Environmental Effects Laboratory, U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. Known physical, chemical, and fishery conditions in 187 Corps of Engineers (CE) impoundments larger than 500 acres are described. Multivariable equations are presented that allow estimation of standing crop and sport fish harvest in CE reservoirs. Data were also reviewed and summarized on the ecological growth and assimilation efficiencies of fish, food consumption rates, respiration rates, temperature tolerances, half-saturation constants for growth, and chemical composition.

Book excerpt: Fast changing legislation and increasing environmental awarenesswithin the non-scientific community demands that the modernapproach to the management of rivers and water resources should bebased on a sound understanding and application of the scientificand ecological principles that underlie freshwater processes. Intwo volumes, The Rivers Handbook offers an expert andexhaustive insight into the principles, methods and tools of modernriver management - always within an integrated and environmentallyacceptable framework. This second volume develops the principlesand philosophies expounded in the first volume into the managementsphere, organizing the approach around problems, diagnosis andtreatment. A fully comprehensive reference to sound methods of modernriver management. The ideal information resource for all river managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of models to assess water quality is becoming increasingly important worldwide. In order to be able to develop a good model, it is necessary to have a good quantitative and ecological description of physical, chemical and biological processes in ecosystems. Such descriptions may be called ``submodels''. This book presents the most important, but not all, submodels applied in water quality modelling. Each chapter deals with a specific physical process and covers its importance, the most applicable submodels (and how to select one), parameter values and their determination, and future research needs. The book will be an excellent reference source for environmental engineers, ecological modellers and all those interested in the modelling of water quality systems.

Book excerpt: As with all ecosystems, river systems involve a complex interaction of a rich diversity of micro-organisms, plants and animals with their physical and chemical environment. The river habitat presents unique problems for organisms exposed to unidirectional currents, seasonal variation in flow, and disturbance due to pollution and other human interference. The book starts with a description of the taxa, their adaptations and their ecologies, followed by chapters describing the ecosystem processes in terms of trophic interactions and the key production processes related to photosynthesis and decomposition. A major chapter then considers the principles, practices and problems associated with making reliable observations on river organisms, leading to final chapters investigating how river biota are impacted by human activity and how, in turn, they can be used as indicators of these effects in river-management programmes.
