Book Synopsis Biological Diversity by : L. N. Petrov
Download or read book Biological Diversity written by L. N. Petrov and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the cornerstones of life's wonders is the vast array of species filling the planet. From plants to animals to humans, there is no shortage of beings to provide 'spice of life' variety is said to be. Periodically, scientists announce the discovery of a 'new' form of life, so it seems as if Earth is capable of producing new species just to keep us on our toes. At times, the immense breadth of living things can even feel overwhelming, as one pauses to ponder how numerically insignificant humans are when compared to the insect population. Given the biological diversity of the planet, it is incumbent upon humans to safeguard the natural beauty of the environment. To that end, conservation takes on special importance, necessitating the balancing of industrial expansion with preserving the flora and fauna surrounding us. This book is an important tool in understanding and researching the many different life forms spanning the globe. Collected here is a substantial and carefully selected listing of relevant literature on biological diversity and its conservation. Following this bibliography are author, title, and subject indexes to allow for further access to this information. The sheer bulk of the works about biological diversity can be so intimidating that a book such as this one becomes useful in sorting through the resources about the importance of life's variety.
Book Synopsis Monitoring Biodiversity by : Alfonso Alonso
Download or read book Monitoring Biodiversity written by Alfonso Alonso and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book compiles case studies regarding the biodiversity research and monitoring program of Andean species and habitats carefully chosen as indicators to assess the short- and long-term effects of a linear disturbance: the PERU LNG pipeline. Set in a scientifically unexplored region of the Andes, Monitoring Biodiversity clearly articulates the Smithsonian-led conceptual framework for the implementation in the field by scientists. It addresses scientific and conservation questions addressed by the research protocols, the experimental design, and data gathering. Moreover, the book covers a gap on how to integrate biodiversity research, monitoring, and conservation into sustainable development projects of national and international interest. The text is presented in both English and Spanish.

Book Synopsis Field and Laboratory Methods in Primatology by : Joanna M. Setchell
Download or read book Field and Laboratory Methods in Primatology written by Joanna M. Setchell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the success of the first edition and bringing together contributions from a range of experts in the field, the second edition of this guide to research on wild primates covers the latest advances in the field, including new information on field experiments and measuring behaviour. It provides essential information and advice on the technical and practical aspects of both field and laboratory methods, covering topics such as ethnoprimatology; remote sensing; GPS and radio-tracking; trapping and handling; dietary ecology; and non-invasive genetics and endocrinology. This integrated approach opens up new opportunities to study the behavioural ecology of some of the most endangered primates and to collect information on previously studied populations. Chapters include methodological techniques; instructions on collecting, processing and preserving samples/data for later analysis; ethical considerations; comparative costs; and further reading, making this an invaluable tool for postgraduate students and researchers in primatology, behavioural ecology and zoology.
Book Synopsis Mammals of South America, Volume 1 by : Alfred L. Gardner
Download or read book Mammals of South America, Volume 1 written by Alfred L. Gardner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast terrain between Panama and Tierra del Fuego contains some of the world’s richest mammalian fauna, but until now it has lacked a comprehensive systematic reference to the identification, distribution, and taxonomy of its mammals. The first such book of its kind and the inaugural volume in a three-part series, Mammals of South America both summarizes existing information and encourages further research of the mammals indigenous to the region. Containing identification keys and brief descriptions of each order, family, and genus, the first volume of Mammals of South America covers marsupials, shrews, armadillos, sloths, anteaters, and bats. Species accounts include taxonomic descriptions, synonymies, keys to identification, distributions with maps and a gazetteer of marginal localities, lists of recognized subspecies, brief summaries of natural history information, and discussions of issues related to taxonomic interpretations.Highly anticipated and much needed, this book will be a landmark contribution to mammalogy, zoology, tropical biology, and conservation biology.
Book Synopsis Taxonomic revision of the olingos (Bassaricyon), with description of a new species, the Olinguito by : Kristofer M. Helgen
Download or read book Taxonomic revision of the olingos (Bassaricyon), with description of a new species, the Olinguito written by Kristofer M. Helgen and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the first comprehensive taxonomic revision of the olingos, Bassaricyon, based on most available museum specimens, with data derived from anatomy, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, fieldwork, and geographic range modeling. Olingos are forest-living, arboreal, nocturnal, frugivorous, and solitary, and have one young at a time. Four olingo species can be recognized, including a Central American species (B. gabbii) and lowland species with eastern, cis-Andean (B. alleni) and western, trans-Andean (B. medius) distributions. Surprisingly, the sister lineage to all previously described species of Bassaricyon is an Andean cloud forest species, which we call the Olinguito, that has never been previously described. Bassaricyon neblina sp. n., en-demic to Colombia and Ecuador, is the smallest living member of the family Procyonidae and the first new species of Carnivora named in the American continents in 35 years. We describe four subspecies of Olinguito across the Northern Andes.
Book Synopsis Fishes of the Fitzcarrald, Peruvian Amazon by : James Albert
Download or read book Fishes of the Fitzcarrald, Peruvian Amazon written by James Albert and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peruvian Amazon has one of the highest concentrations of aquatic biodiversity in the world, with almost 1,000 fish species currently known, and more described every year. This book shows 502 images representing 274 fish species from the Alto Purús National Park, a remote wilderness area located in the Fitzcarrald region of southeastern Peru. Species richness - the number of distinct evolutionary lineages - is a fundamental measure of overall biodiversity. Species are basic structural and functional units of ecology and evolution. Accurate species identification is necessary to document genetic, physiological, and ecological aspects of biodiversity. Recognizing and naming species matters, no matter how subtle the differences may seem to the human eye. This book provides the most complete record of fish diversity in the Fitzcarrald region to date, and will be useful to ichthyologists, ecologists, biogogeographers, and aquatic resource managers working throughout greater Amazonia.
