Book excerpt: The symposium included 600 presentations in 50 sessions on bioremediation and supporting technologies used for a wide range of contaminants already in, or poised to invade, soil, groundwater, and sediment. Three hundred and fifty-two papers were selected and organized into ten volumes. Volume two's articles address the use of natural attenuation to remediate sites with a variety of hydrocarbons and chlorinated compounds contaminating porous media and groundwater. Methods of encouraging naturally occurring microbial activity are discussed, along with sampling, assessment, and long-term monitoring techniques and devices. Articles average eight pages and contain abstracts and references. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is based on surveys carried out in Burundi, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, the Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Senegal, the Sudan and Uganda to identify the various types of fermented fishery products, their processing characteristics and economic importance. It was observed that fermented fish processing is an artisanal activity and the processes differ from one country to another. Three basic methods were identified: fermentation with salting and drying; fermentation and drying without salting; and fermentation with salting but no drying. It was also observed in the study that, unlike in Southeast Asian countries, fermented fishery products in Africa are usually whole or in cut pieces, and are not a paste or sauce. Fermented fish is used in Africa both as a condiment and as food fish. Fermented fishery products contribute to protein intake of the people especially those in the rural hinterland where fresh fish is not readily available. Curing by fermentation was found to be an important method of preservation particularly because poor quality fish or unpopular species of fish are usually processed in this way. For this reason, fermentation helps to salvage fish which would otherwise have been thrown away. Post harvest losses in African artisanal fisheries may thus be lower than often assumed. The sanitary conditions of fermented fish production were generally found to be poor and processing methods were not standardized. In the light of the observations made, some recommendations have been suggested to improve quality in order to enhance intra-regional trade in fish and fishery products.

Book excerpt: This new book is the first single-source of taxonomic information on Leptographium species. Leptographium Species: Tree Pathogens, Insect Associates, and Agents of Blue-Stain covers all known species of the fungi. Detailed illustrations, comprehensive descriptions, and keys to the species will aid in the identification of this destructive fungi which is amongst the most important causal agents of sapstain in timber. Most of these fungi are carried by bark beetles, and the complex ecology of the relationships between Leptographium and their vectors has intrigued plant pathologists, mycologists, entomologists, ecologists, and foresters for years. This single resource will help anyone working with lumber accurately identify all known species of these fungi.

Three major forces are currently driving this discipline: the exploration of microbial diversity by genetic and genomic tools, the ongoing progress in the modelling of various transient phenomena, and environmental biotechnology. This book provides a state-of-art-overview of developments in the field of environmental biotechnology concerning exploration, implementation, modelling, economic development and safety. It comprises selected, peer-reviewed papers that were presented at the European Symposium on Environmental Biotechnology (ESEB) 2004, held in Oostende, Belgium, April 2004.

Book excerpt: Freshwater fungi are diverse in numbers, taxonomic groups and ecological roles, but they have been a relatively neglected group until the last decade. This book brings together information on freshwater fungi, reviewing topics and providing informative comprehensive text on practical approaches for their study. The book presents chapters authored by leading experts on topics including; isolation and identification, plant and animal pathogens, teleomorph-anamorph connections, ecology, microscope techniques, measuring fungal activity, effects of pollution, interactions with stream invertebrates, and dispersal. This book should be an essential part of any microbiologists library and, serve as a catalyst for further development of our understanding of freshwater mycology in the 21st Century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
