Book excerpt: Section on Pharmacology of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (SEPHAR), Proceedings of the Second International Pharmacological Meeting, August 20-23, 1963, Volume 2: Biochemical and Neurophysiological Correlation of Centrally Acting Drugs focuses on the composition, reactions, and applications of centrally acting drugs. The selection first offers information on the physiology of striopallidum in relation to extrapyramidal function and disorders and actions of dopa and dopamine in relation to function of the central nervous system. Discussions focus on correlation of behavioral and clinical states with metabolism of dopamine, functions of dopamine in the brain, and the central pharmacology of dopamine. The text then examines the role of brain dopamine (3-hydroxytyramine) in Parkinsonism, including behavior of dopamine in the extrapyramidal centers in patients with Parkinson's disease; brain dopamine and the extrapyramidal symptomatology of Parkinson's disease; and parallelism between Parkinson's disease and the Parkinson-like state induced by reserpine in man. The publication ponders on pharmacological studies on tremorine and metabolism of tremorine. The manuscript also takes a look at the contribution on the pathophysiology of intentional tremor; failure of Antiparkinson drugs to antagonize hypothermia in tremorine-treated rats; and significance of dopamine in psychomotor stimulant action. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in centrally acting drugs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parkinsonism of various types has long been a debilitating and cruel affliction for significant numbers of people, and even today the cure remains elusive. The present volume explores the colorful and sometimes alarming history of the attempts to provide at least some relief from the symptoms of this disorder, commencing with interesting reports from ancient India and medieval Europe and continuing until the present time. Especial attention is devoted to L-DOPA therapy, still the leading pharmacological approach to the disorder more than forty years after its first application, and its place in the development of neurochemistry. But the employment of solanaceous plant alkaloid-based therapies, which dominated antiparkinsonian therapy until the mid-20th century, and the broad range of other approaches which found varying degrees of popularity, including those stimulated by the encephalitis epidemic which appeared in Europe during the First World War, are also discussed. The author concludes that antiparkinsonian therapy was never 'irrational', but was rather always determined by prevailing medical, pharmacological and scientific paradigms, so that its history is inextricably linked with experimental and clinical developments in these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical and practical significance of antimuscarinic drugs is more obvious today than ever before. Antimuscarinics have helped to explore the pathomechanisms of of Alzheimer's disease, and to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's, cardiovascular problems, gastrointestinal diseases, and even nerve gas poisoning. No other drug class can claim as long a history with so many therapeutic applications, yet the most significant developments in this broad chapter of pharmacology come from the discovery of different muscarinic receptor sites in the peripheral and central nervous system and from the availability of many new selective agents, notably antagonists, for these different receptor types. Pharmacology of Antimuscarinic Agents, written by an expert in anesthesiology and drug research, focuses on the basic principles of antimuscarinic drugs, their therapeutic value, how they work, and what versions are now available in the U.S. and abroad. This is the first time in decades an author has reviewed historical and current literature to present a comprehensive, standard reference on the antimuscarinic family.

Book excerpt: Proceedings of the Second International Pharmacological Meeting, Volume 1: Pharmacology of Conditioning, Learning and Retention is a collection of papers presented at the Second International Pharmacological Meeting on August 20-23, 1963. This book is organized into two sections encompassing 28 chapters. The first section defines the main problem in psychopharmacology, which is the establishment of methods that will enable to appreciate in animals the value of psychotropic drugs in the therapy of human mental diseases. This section also describes the specific activation of the central nervous system and its significance in psychopharmacological research. The second section explores the electrophysiological phenomena observed during pharmacological conditioning, with emphasis on the modifications of electrical activity during the establishment and the performance of the conditioned responses. This section also deals with the electrical correlated of various kinds of conditioned behavior in animals and the alterations of spontaneous rhythm and evoked potentials. This book is of value to psychopharmacologists and electrophysiologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmacological and Biophysical Agents and Behavior is a compendium of papers that discusses the effects of radiations, drugs, or other similar agents on human behavior. This collection is a reference guide to the analysis of behavioral effects of other agents such as those produced by radiation, hypoxia. or thermal stress. One paper reviews the effects of material or corpuscular radiations and electromagnetic radiations that even low doses occurring during the prenatal stage can result in permanent behavioral deficits. Another paper notes that any hazards resulting from the increasing use of microwave generating devices should be investigated as the possibility of such subtle hazards can affect learning, emotional, and personality behaviors. One paper analyzes the chronic effects of thermal stress on behavior, as well as those of convulsants (strychnine) and general stimulants (caffeine). The book also reviews the effects of sympathomimetic amines on emotional behavior, sleep, activity, food intake, and temperature regulation. This compendium can prove beneficial for pharmacologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, students, and professors in related disciplines.
